    In this 1980s sci-fi classic, small-town California teen Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) is thrown back into the '50s when an experiment by his eccentric scientist friend Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) goes awry. Traveling through time in a modified DeLorean car, Marty encounters young versions of his parents (Crispin Glover, Lea Thompson), and must make sure that they fall in love or he'll cease to exist. I think that you're now my FAVORITE reactionist .. I loved watching you watch one of my favorite movies of all time (but I consider all 3 movies as a whole and as one though) .. You're reactions was the same as mine when I first saw these. You're AMAZING and VERY cute!! No not hitting on you (just saying).
      From the U.K. right? But it's weird, it's almost like you've been to Texas (once in a while I heard a bit of Texan when you talked). ; - ) ... : - ) I can't wait to hear and see your reactions to Part II and Part III .... If you haven't already, put the ROCKY movies on your list of things to watch. It's one AMAZING love story (all of the movies and sequels as a whole). The last 4 movies will have you in tears (with ROCKY 1 & 2 being the exception) .. These movies (ROCKY movies) instilled perseverance within me - and remember - don't judge a book (or movie) by it's cover, you'll love all of them as a whole. 🙂
      P.S. Thank you for making me smile .. I really needed that, it's been a rough year.

    Thomas Wilson, who played Biff, has said that he himself was bullied when he was young and was very uncomfortable with the idea of being a bully. He really had to get out of his comfort zone, as an actor, to pull this off. Safe to say he nailed it. :)

      Thomas Wilson really is just a great guy. To this day people come up to him with some "Butthead" quote but he never really tells people he's tired of it. He gets it so often that he prints up business cards with the responses to the most common things said to him such as "Yes I am him, No I don't think your a butthead, I'd love to sign an autograph or take a picture"
      I'm pretty sure he still does some stand up comedy as well.

    Some trivia: The old bum on the bench when Marty comes back from the past was a very good friend of mine, Buck Flower, (he died a few years back). Buck was a terrific character actor and appeared in tons of films. In fact, John Carpenter was a good friend of Buck's and he cast Buck whenever he could in a number of of his movies. What almost no one knows is that when Buck was young and a struggling actor in Hollywood, he actually performed in an adult film to pay the rent, and that was the same film on the markee of the theater in the background in the scene with Buck in Back to the Future. Robert Zemeckis was also a friend of Buck, knew his history, and thought it would be a great joke on him to make that movie the one showing in the theater.

    • @johnnehrich9601
      @johnnehrich9601 7 місяців тому

      Yes, and by 1985, much of the life of the downtown had transferred to the malls, including movie theaters. Thus the ones left by '85 were put to other uses, including new evangelical church groups, or as porn theaters. At the time, the Supreme Court had ruled a few years earlier than x-rated movies were legal. But the first VCR's were just coming on the market, terribly expensive, so people couldn't watch porn in their own home.

    I was born in 1950 and thus remember the '50's first-hand. In addition, being part of a great story, I absolutely love the attention to detail and nuance they put into the 1955 segment. Watching this when it first came out in '85 triggered a whole lot of forgotten memories, of how different things were thirty years earlier, and how a person from the future would be greeted - all the things we used to think would happen, but didn't, all the things we never even considered. This movie could be taught in history class.
    Twist-off caps on soda bottles were not yet implemented and all bottles had to be open with an opener. Service stations had lots of attendants who actually serviced your car and self-pump was unthinkable. No "normal" person at the time would imagine a SECOND tv. Purple men's underwear would subject the wearer to unending teasing.
    In 1955, the idea that a movie actor would someday become president (or a black man could become mayor) was unthinkable, particularly as Ronald Reagan was a grade B actor. (The theater marquee in '55 is promoting a movie he did with Barbara Stanwcyk.) His wife at the time was Jane Wyman. Jerry Lewis - the guy Doc suggested would be vp in the future - was a comedian who played this annoying infantile character. Jack Benny, as sec. of the treasury, was also funny. He too was a comedian whose whole schtick was how tight he was. (His iconic joke was were he gets held up by a robber who demands Benny's "money or his life." Long pause and the robber says "well?" Benny replies "I'm thinking, I'm thinking.)
    On the other hand, if you watch the first sequel, where they come to 2015, you can see how like all future predictions, they get things so wrong. For instance, in the first movie, they indicate how far civil rights had come, but in 1985, few would have ever thought we'd see a black president in 2015.

    • @Cheepchipsable
      @Cheepchipsable 7 місяців тому +1

      You would be flagged as some kind of deviant with purple underwear, and keeping your daughter at home would be the norm, which is why Lorraine was so "thirsty", as the kids say...

  • @joehoy9242
    @joehoy9242 7 місяців тому +9

    11:33 - "Another one". The implication being that Lorraine (who we subsequently find out is in the "boy crazy" phase of being a teenage girl) is possibly not as innocent as she first appears, and it's well-known among the boys in school that she's not shy about changing with the curtains open. Today this would be a problematic thing to include as a plot point, though even back then the movie implies that while not exactly innocent, being so young and inexperienced she's definitely naive about the possible negative consequences - and learns the hard way about the way men can behave when Biff attempts to assault her in the car. And for his part, George comes to understand right from wrong when it comes to how to behave with women in that same scene - given how terrified he is of Biff, he's willing to stand up to him and risk being seriously injured when he sees what Biff is trying to do to Lorraine, and he finally decides to risk it all and try to throw a punch not because Biff is attacking him, but because he sees Biff throw Lorraine to the floor. Having seen Marty successfully land a punch on Biff, he knows that it is in fact possible for a smaller guy to take Biff on and come out on top - which he would not have seen or known in the original timeline. At the climax of the scene in the parking lot, George finds out that not only is it possible, but that he's capable of it himself when it comes to the crunch.
    This movie is well-known for having one of the tightest scripts ever written, but the visual storytelling is absolutely fantastic as well.

    Just wanted to add this, in terms of the origin story. I read that when Marty was around 14 everyone was talking about a " mad scientist " who made these crazy inventions but parents told their kids to stay away from him but Marty actually snuck into his lab and doc caught him and was surprised that Marty was actually interested in his work so from then on he was just always around and their friendship blossomed from there

There are a cameo in this one, Huey Lewis and the News provided the song "Back in Time" to the Back to the Future soundtrack, which played during the beginning and in the film's credits. At the beginning of Back to the Future, Huey Lewis took on a nerdy persona in an uncredited cameo as a judge for Battle of the Bands. Marty's band "The Pinheads" played a hard rock cover of Huey Lewis and the News' "Power of Love," but were ironically rejected by Huey Lewis' character. And this was the first film role for Billy Zane While he played a bigger role than a short cameo, Billy Zane made his acting debut as Biff's friend Match in this movie and second. They are fun and entertaining, but since they have a lot of cultural references they are in no way "timeless". In case you didn't notice all of the "future" dates have passed with little or no semblance to the actual dates.

      I would argue that they were famous... or at least infamous... before the movie. That's why the movie selected the car instead of a refrigerator as the original script had it.
      But yeah - the car wasn't... good. The stainless steel body panels and gull doors made it distinctive. It presented respectable fuel efficiency. But ultimately, it was an under-powered car for the "sports car" label and price. And then... there were the production quality issues. So many production quality issues. Marty having issues with the car at a pinnacle moment in the flick might just be a nod to that.
      Oh. And then there were the drug trafficking related legal issues that earned the DeLorean name infamy - always with the mention of the DMC company that produced the cars.

I’ve always assumed that line was a reference to that game.

      The fact that we know Lorraine was changing next to a window with the curtains open enough that George chooses to actively spy on her is enough to heavily imply he wasn’t the only one who got hit by a car trying not to get caught in the act.

  • @Billinois78
    @Billinois78 7 місяців тому +4

    A darker earlier draft of the script went into more detail about what happened to Lorraine. In that version, she had been "R-Worded" (rhymes with grape) by Biff, and partly blamed herself for being so wild. I think even her parents say it was her own fault. She married George because she felt sorry for him but also because he seemed "safe". Imagine Biff becoming her husband's work supervisor. It also led to her alcoholism and chain-smoking habit. I'm glad they lightened up on that aspect of the script, but it does explain why she put on the "At your age I never" act to her kids.

      @@Cheepchipsable Stoltz saw it as a tragedy because he pointed out something that no one ever addresses. This Marty came back to a time that his entire family was completely different people than whom he left. Even though these versions of his parents were more successful those are not the people he was raised by or his siblings he grew up with. It is actually sad if you think about it. He has none of the memories of these people. Marty comes across as a bit of an outcast, which makes sense he might meet up with the Doc, (I had kind of assumed Marty was paid to do odd jobs for the Doc since their relationship isn't really explained). Had Marty not been on the outer he probably wouldn't have given Doc the time of day.

    3. Eric Stoltz was first cast as Marty, but he didn't play well with others and was fired. Some of his long shots are still in the movie.
    4. The flammable material set on fire with the model exercise had to have been put there on purpose.
    5. It's always fun to see how people react to the Marty and his mom car scene. 🤣
    6. George McFly/Crispin Glover didn't like that the story ended with the family being prosperous.

    Eric Stoltz was the original Marty McFly. They filmed practically the entire movie with him and at some point decided Stoltz was not right for the part. That required massive reshoots with Michael J. Fox taking over as the lead. Fox said he was in a state of total exhaustion on the first BTTF because he was shooting the popular TV show, "Family Ties," at the same time.
    Thomas F. Wilson (Biff) has stated that working with Stoltz was a real chore because he insisted on method acting and expected everyone to call him Marty on set. Wilson almost got into a fight with Stoltz because Stoltz was actually hurting Wilson during a scene and would not stop during each take. Wilson said Stoltz almost broke his collar bone and he had massive bruising on his body after wrapping that one scene. Wilson, however, had nothing but great things to say about Michael J. Fox when he came on board.

    There's a subplot that isn't explicit, but it's there if you know to watch for it: George is left-handed. See, decades ago (even as recently as the 70s, depending on where you’re from), there was a belief among some pockets of Western culture that being left-handed was evil and unnatural, and kids would be forced to learn to use their right hands. When he’s writing it looks like he doesn’t know how to hold a pen. It’s one of the main sources of his awkwardness. And what was his big moment? When his right hand was being held, and he was forced to deck Biff with a left hook. If you watch the scene again, look at the joy in his face as he stares at his left hand. He’s not just pleased with himself that he flattened a bully, but he has decided at that moment that he’s going to be himself, and that's when things started to turn around for him.

    22:29 I think a more effective way of getting Doc to read the letter and heed Marty's warning would be to
    A, write Doc's address on the envelope and drop it in a mailbox or
    B, give it to George or Lorraine and tell them to wait a couple of years and then mail it to Doc
    Either way the outcome would be the same, Doc would get the letter with his morning post and likely open it (not knowing or suspecting its contents beforehand) and read the warning.

    4:12, the joke about changing the oil is in reference to McFly senoir's hair.
    Men would use hair oils and stuff like Brylcreem to have that wet slick look. More refined these days but back in the 50's it would have been a closer to Vaseline.
    Many people seem to miss Marty accidentally activates the time machine, he never intended to time travel.
    Coloured underwear wasn't a thing in the 50's, and you cut this out but I'm sure Lorraine mentions a Glory Box or Hope Chest. These were large boxes where mothers would gather items like cutlery, diners sets, quilts and sheets and other linen for daughters to put in their homes when they got married. Those items were expensive back then.
    IIRC there is a double entendre there because Lorraine puts Marty's pants on her Hope Chest.
    17:20, George can't watch that episode of his favourite show "later", this is 20 years before the VCR and it could be years before it's repeated on TV.
    There was never intended you be a second movie, and the producers just put it in there as a gag.
    Another great film from the same director with Christopher Lloyd is "Who Framed Roger Rabbit".

    The man behind the music, Huey Lewis, was also the talent judge saying it was too loud.

    Love the absolute joy you're having watching these! I grew up in the 80s and love the movies from that time.

    27 minutes is well short of the amount of time needed to make a reaction to a full-length movie worth watching. Nothing personal. Hope your channel receives lots of subscribers.

    The teacher who said they played to loud was Hughey Lewis whose band did the theme song to the movie

    no one made plans for a sequel because no one expected the phenomenal success the movie achieved. by the way, both the next movies were shot at the same time! one tip: watch the opening scene of episode 2 carefully! there is something strange about it, but is will you notice it?..
