OMG! NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD HEAR ANYBODY DO A REACTION TO THE DIXIE DREGS! CONGRATULATIONS! 👍
You look just like I did, decades ago, when I heard my first Dixie Dregs album!
I'm a bass player from way back, myself... played semi-professionally for about 35 years.
Anyway, long story short, one of the best drummers I ever played with was a double kicker out of Kansas City... he said I got a band I want you to hear and that was all she wrote... it was the Dixie Dregs!
I knew before you even heard a note you were going to love it because I know you're a drummer. And if you're like me, your standards are set higher than most players, so get ready to go out and get everything you can get on the Dixie Dregs because you will pick up a ton of stuff off that drummer just like I did off the bass player, Andy West!
FWI... Later on Steve Morse, the guitar player here, went on to form his own band called The "Steve Morse Band" check them out because it's killer like the Dregs! 😁

Growing up in Perry,Georgia in the late 60’s and into the 70’s, we were bombarded with Allman Brothers music. Then there was Sea Level which was a spin off of the Allman Brothers. Capricorn Records was spitting out some incredible music and then The Great Spectacular happens and I had never before heard southern jazz/fusion/country rock with the monumental skill level that was produced. The Dixie Dregs released Freefall and I was seriously spoiled at that point and that was around 1976. Have been a huge Steve Morse fan ever since and have met him twice.

I spent about 2 hours with Steve one night helping him fix his airplane that he was flying from CA to FL. I was a massive Dregs and Steve Morse fan for decades, but yet I didn’t recognize him until he asked my name and introduced himself after about an hour. I remember he asked, “what’s your name?” And I responded, and then he said, “I’m Steve… Morse.“ I paused and processed the information. I said, “The guitarist?”
He said “yeah, didn’t you see my T-shirt?“
Truthfully, I hadn’t because it was dark out and I was kind of focused on his airplane. It must’ve been some sort of concert T-shirt or something. I actually don’t remember.
We got to chat airplanes and music during the next hour.
As a bass player, Andy West has always been the most influential bass player that I’ve ever listened to. And Steve Morse and Rod MorganStein are unquestionably some of the best musicians that I’ve ever heard. I was sorry when T Lavitz passed away, because as a keyboard player, he was also awesome. I have a couple of his albums also.

Rod Morgenstein is an incredible drummer and also a professor at Berklee College of Music. Brilliant dude. For a lefty. :) Check him out with Jordan Rudess, too. He plays Premier drums, which sound different in their own way but still very good. I think his kicks are both 22x18." Probably shallower back then, which gave it a shorter time to "thumP' like a smaller kick.

Wow... I'm impressed someone suggested the Dixie Dregs so persistently. The leader of that band is lead guitarist Steve Morse, Andy West was the bassist on this album and the drummer is Rod Morgenstein who later joined an 80s rock band called Winger.
I recommend you look into the Steve Morse band as well...great stuff. Also check out Spyro Gyra... another great all around music group.

I've seen the dregs once and steve morse g. 3 times. Absolutely brilliant guitarist, insane band. Tight as a drum. His solo work kills and his many years with deep purple have shown he is a legend. Won guitarist of the year in ”guitar magazine” for several years in a row. He's great at classical too. Dude is super humble too. Saw him another time at a guitar workshop show.

Try, "I'm Freaking Out". Notes of interest: Steve Morse won Best Overall Guitar Player in Guitar Players readers poll 5 years running and was put in the hall of giants, Rod Morganstien has won numerous Modern Drummer readers polls, and The Dregs won a Grammy for Best Instrumental Album for 'Industry Standard'. Man autocorrect is a bitch!

    Hello Chod,
Now you've started with them, you have got to hear more of the Dixie Dregs albums..."What If" and "Dregs of the Earth". Then, try some of Steve's solo work with the Steve Morse Band, starting with High Tension Wires. Trust me...You will not be disappointed! I've lost count of how many times I've seen them live since the late 70's...(well over 30), and they always deliver great music!! Be prepared for a variety of tunes...Progressive jazz fusion, funk, country picking, and good ol Rock! Steve Morse, as many have already noted below, a magnificent guitarist!!! I know you will become a fan!.

I remember when we had magazines, the Dreggs were out for a Lil’ bit and every player in the Dreggs were each on their respective instruments cover. So look up Rod Morganstien on that issue of Drummer magazine, should say something about the kit he was playing. By the way Steve Morse(Guitar) has been playing with deep purple for a few years. They have a diverse and eclectic style. The violin player, who was national Fiddle champion could follow on guitar just as easy! Saw them 3x and didn’t want my money back at all ! Always delivered!!!

Always have loved the Dregs. We got a last minute slot opening for them at the 23rd Street Chestnut Cafe in Philadelphia. Met alot of heros of mine who turned out to be just human. They actually listened to our set and loved it and complimented us...we were honored to share the stage. They of course punked us musically...we represented but its the Dregs. They were very cool accessible people. Amazing band

Back in the late 70's I was living in the Cleveland area and listening the a college radio station out of the Akron area. They would play jazz at lunch time and they played an song from Al Dimeola's Elegant Gypsy album everyday. That song was Mediterranean Sundance (ua-cam.com/video/hhccIfevjCU/v-deo.html), an acoustic guitar duet featuring Al and Paco De Lucia that is mind blowing. Anyway, I just had to have that album so off I went to the local Peaches Records store. I picked up the album but I also saw a music news publication they had stacks of and one of the articles was about the Dixie Dregs and their newly released album What If. That article made it very clear the guitarist was someone special and that I needed that album. A few days later I was back to get the Dreg's Freefall album after loving What If. And my reading of the liner notes from Elegant Gypsy that talked about Al Dimeola getting his start with Chick Corea's band Return to Forever put that album on the shopping list. Elegant Gypsy, Romantic Warrior, Freefall and What if are still among my favorite albums all these years later.
I've seen Steve Morse live with the Dregs, the Steve Morse Band and Deep Purple many times and he never disappoints.

Each member in the band is phenomenal unto themselves. That being said, Steve Morse was Guitar Player Magazine’s Best All-Around Guitarist of the year FIVE YEARS IN A ROW (until they made a rule that you could only win 5 times and then you would be “retired” from the running).

Oh, Chod? Say, Chod? My favorite band of all time is the Dixie Dregs. I know their songs like most people know Beatles songs. I've been digging into your channel since last September, only just now saw this. I have been listening to the Dregs for many many years. I created one of most amazing instrumental art piece for Rod. He used mostly Premier drums. 3 rack toms and 2 floor toms. Group leader Steve Morse was a big fan of The Mahavishnu Orchestra, and this group was a lot like a countryish version of that group. That whole bit where they trade 4's, then 2's, etc. is heavily influenced by the Mahavishnu Orchestra's song "One Word", which does that, and then has a great Billy Cobham drum solo.
