I really admire your take on this situation. I remember 10yrs ago working three jobs at the mall at all the stores I loved just to be able to afford to shop there. Then realizing my $7.25 an hour was going back to my employer because I spent all my money with them. I hated my living situation at the time and all I could do to feel better about myself was shop. Now as a 30yr old I find myself holding back more on big handbag purchases. I tell my hubs, "I'm going to buy this bag!" But in reality, I hold off because I want to be sure I am buying a bag for the right reasons. I think consumerism is the worst thing for your mental health and working at the mall was def a hellish experience and now that consumerism is literally on every screen, I feel that the younger generation is just being exploited by marketing campaigns that make them feel bad about not having the latest and greatest. (I work in marketing...)
I’ll be honest and say my addiction for handbags did start as low self esteem in middle school. I didn’t look like the popular girls, couldn’t wear the same clothes but I could wear the same purses… compliments on my purses would then turn into confidence boosters. Now as an adult , I sometimes do still get that burst of confidence from my bags ! Thanks for sharing ❤
I don't have a low self-esteem. I just like luxury and designer handbags. I am not a bag hoarder either. I don't understand people who own 50 bags. I carry every bag I use on regular bases. If I don't use a bag, I sell it.
I have some luxury bags but only for the quality, nothing with a logo and most people would never know where they are from, having a bag with a label that shouts ‘this cost a fortune’ makes me cringe, it shouts I need validation. Designer logos are a toxic trap. We are enough as we are people!!
I’ve always been into handbags since I was little. My mom told me I loved finding pockets and little pouches to put things in and out of them. Organizing everything. It wasn’t until I was in my early twenties I discovered “luxury bags” before then I still had a lot of bags . Mostly totes. Now that I have curated my luxury bag collection I’m really happy with what I have . I don’t think it’s about showing off or self esteem for me because I have non Lux bags I carry sometimes too. I think the luxury bags I do have just puts a “pep in my step” and look more put together. That’s all.
there is no such thing as "influencer culture". there is conspicuous consumption and attention economy. not everything everyone does can be considered culture. and, in any way, not everyone is thinking about expensive bags all day, like we do, thank god. we are in a bubble.
No! In fact at almost 50, what people might think is the last of my problem. I will wear logos or more quiet luxury if I want to, I buy luxury because I love it and can afford it. I have nothing to prove to anyone. Having our own style and do what makes us happy is how it should be. Luxury is just one part of my life not all my life!
No, people enjoy what they enjoy. They shouldn’t be made to feel bad over what they want or like. I’m sure the argument can be turned around. People who can’t buy luxury goods make those who can feel bad to make themselves feel superior.
Honestly, a comment like this proves the point of the video. There a gazillion ton of research about labellust and how it makes some owners feel. To keep up appearances, with the Joneses. It’s the same mechanism.
I personally don’t care if a bag is designer or not. If it looks good and I need one (!) I’ll buy it, if I think it looks bad or the quality is off I don’t care what brand it is from or what the current trend is, I will not spend my hard earned money on it. Let’s be honest, the actual issue is, aside from making materialistic things your personality, that way too many people also make “being on trend” their personality. Half the designers bags out there are not practical, they look goofy and they can only be worn for really special occasions or just for one or two seasons until they look dated. And no, it’s not an investment, stop lying to yourself.
I don't carry luxury handbags and never will. I can afford those items but they aren't worth the money to me. It's well established that you aren't paying for quality when you buy a luxury handbag, you're paying for the brand name. While I'm sure there are exceptions, surely it's common knowledge that the majority of people carrying luxury bags with visible branding are doing it because they think it will impress other people or because they're trying to fit in. That is insecurity.
If you have enough money, then you are confident enough that you don't need them. Most rich people who wear them are paid ads. If you want it, get it. But if you only want it to fit in or show that you have made it...maybe get therapy instead? There are deeper issues at play here, work on them first. And then get it if you still want it because you actually want it, not just as a way of fitting in.
Nah... this big company won't earn a dime from me i just put my wallet in my pocket when i go out its easy,no make up purse or any thing unnecessary.how easy it can be.or maybe i will spend money on something more important its a business they just selling their logo with low grade quality.i can't be fooled so therefore someone like me is irrelevant for their multi million business.
People who buy designer handbags think that allows them to blend into the old-money strata of society, when in reality, for old-money, the price of an hermes is spare change. If you can't afford a 300,000 dollar vehicle, you probably shouldn't be buying a 30,000 dollar bag.
Also, shopping can be a coping mechanism for past trauma because novelty can be a distraction from pain.

Yes, definitely, yes.
yes like the new coach Denim bags nothing i like but feel I need a Denim tabby just because it all over youtube
I guess it depends on how loud your luxury bag is. And how flaunting you hold/wear it.

You can only be "made to feel" bad about something you already feel bad about.

We all like to dress up on occasion though we don't need to wear designer labels to look sharp. Logos add nothing but expense.

No.
Male perspective i'd say yes
Not to sound arrogant, but I usually receive so many compliments on my physique, that I don’t feel the need to carry around expensive anything.
That's just a fact. Rick Owens said working out is better than endlessly buying stuff.

Not really. You have plenty of old money who go for tacky stuff and plenty who don’t. They’re not a monolith. New money isn’t either.
@tuttuttut7758 And Hermes isn't necessarily any less tacky than Gucci or Jacqmeus.
