No, they were definitely carried and used in war just not as a primary arm. They’re a sidearm just like a longsword/arming sword was to a medieval Knight. Generally speaking, both Knights and Samurai carried polearms as their primary (Spear, Halberd, Poleaxe, Naginata) and once that weapon was too damaged or destroyed or they were disarmed of that weapon, they’d switch to their sidearm which would typically be a sword (Longsword, Arming Sword, Messer, Falchion, Katana, Tachi) and then to various knives after that (Rondel, Bollock, Tanto)

And your craftsmanship is well developed. Serious kudos to you my friend, you did an excellent job on this weapon, and the scale of it makes it something you can have in a small home! I love it!

How to file or otherwise remove material when your files are the same hardness as the sword? They don't have carbide tools or anyway to create really hard or wear resistant alloy steels!

Actually, the steel used for the blade is not laminated steel, but just high carbon steel.
