William Lai Ching-te of Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) took the lead early in the vote count and held on to it, keeping opposition Kuomintang and Taiwan People’s Party candidates at bay. The results of the poll are expected to impact relations across the Taiwan Strait and between Beijing and Washington.

This was a surprisingly close race, interesting how it was quite evenly split 3-way.

No party has won the 57 seats needed to command a majority in the 113-seat legislative Yuan.
The main opposition KMT has won 52 seats.
The DPP won 51 seats, while the TPP won 8 seats. The other two seats were claimed by independent candidates.
William Lai's win, with a little over 40% of the votes, makes him a president who cannot "claim a mandate or majority", according to Shelley Rigger, Professor of East Asian Politics at Davidson College.
They really ought to change their system to be more representative.
I'm thinking they should go for one where the winner - and only entrant🙄 - gets 2952 votes in favour - 0 against

The only way it could maybe be improved is cutting down the voters from nearly 3000. Although China is country of 1.4 billion, 3000 voters still seems a bit high to me.

You are 100% correct. As long as Taiwan does not declare independence, China should just allow them to run their own government. But China should still pursue the formal reunification process, to avoid separatists from declaring independence. And China should impose the People’s Liberation Army on the island, to safeguard china’s national sovereignty over the island.
