Had a Snoopy and a Donkey Kong Jr. My dad, an electronic hacker, tired of paying for not so cheap batteries, "modded" the devices, so they would run on regular AA batteries, and would last far longer than the original. He also hacked the gameboy night light accessory, so both the console and the light would run on only one charger.
I was born in 1976 so these were a staple of my childhood. Donkey Kong, Mickey and Donald, Zelda and Rain Shower were some of my favourites. But it was Donkey Kong II that I really loved and mastered.
Those crystal screen handhelds look so cool, and many companies (especially Hasbro) would release many toys over the years using a similar concept, like with "Pixel Chix".
Rob, the content you’re adding to this channel is absolutely wonderful. Perfect blend of nostalgia and interesting information - look forward to seeing your next video!
Another thing you forgot to mention about the Nintendo table tops games is that even though they ran on two C batterys the battery life on those table tops lasted for 3 years! 🙂👍
These game & watch devices were my introduction to playing Nintendo as a kid and that's why i love Nintendo still play Nintendo today in 2023! Nintendo 4 life!! 🕹️🎮🕹️
Have also often thought that a complete Game & Watch Collection on the Switch would be pretty awesome, it’ll probably never happen but it would be pretty amazing if it did!
I still have my original Mario's cement factory Red table top game from 1983! I hope there's a way on how to get restoration for it to make it look like new the way it did in 1983 when i was 12 years old when i played with it all the time!
I had grown up with Game & Watch and liked it a lot and still do. :) My personally favourite was Green House. I really liked all the innovations and experiments from Nintendo, which is probably the reason why I've passed the Nintendo Switch until now - too common. ;) I'm hoping for something unusual and innovative from Nintendo again, but I have the feeling that at the moment of the Switch's success, they're not taking any big risks.
Game and Watch was my life I’ve had most of the collection Would love a Pokemon , edition gaming watch, which I feel with Harold, the gaming watch and Nintendo into the future
I had a large collection of these during the 80s and 90s, unfortunately I sold most of them at car boot sales, it seemed like a good idea at the time but I deeply regret it now. I only have three left now.
I got my first Nintendo Game and Watch at 24 years old in 1981..Fire..I thought it was Fire Fire but it was over 40 years ago and my memory is dim recollection..anyway..many hours of catching bouncing sprites from the left into a ambulance looking vehicle..with bleeps..and it got faster..dunno where it went..it was 10 years before anyone in the family got another video game..that turned out to be a Sega Master System..and 2 Tiger handhelds..then a GameBoy a year later in 1992..1993 saw our first Nintendo console Super NES..and many more consoles followed
Brilliant video, best on the channel for ages! More of these ‘History of’ videos please! I used to have a number of G&Ws as a boy, my favourites being Donkey Kong, Zelda and Mario Bros. Just to point that thanks to the hard work of an amazingly talented group all 60 G&W systems are now available to play via the MAME emulator and they look and feel just like the real thing! In fact I’ve just got them all working on my Odin Pro and it’s a brilliant slice of nostalgia!
And how many of those game and watch games did i have? Still think the dual screen Donkey Kong was my favourite. Used to take them apart for some strange, fetish lol
I own a mickey and donald which has no batteries in since... I'd say 10 years now. I think I'm heading for the store to get a couple of cr43 this very afternoon!
I have been lucky enough to manage to collect the whole set of these, even the variants such as the time out ones and judge green and purple plus the little known bassmate model
i do but unfortunately its generally used to scam folk,i just gave the person dogs abuse.the dialogue just seems off when speaking to them.couldn’t even tell me his first name even though i know your names
I had Toss-Up, mint in box. Bought it from Tandy (Radio Shack) about 1980. I foolishly sold it on eBay for such a give away price years ago. Stupid. I used to take it to school lol
I'm not sure how a purpose built device would work for all the different form factors. Primarily the up and down and side-to-side screens would be problematic.
Thanks for interesting video. There were Soviet Union made clones of "Game & Watch" series named "Электроника (игры)", there is good wikipedia about them. Interesting was it just Steal and Remake style thing or was it somehow with some agreement with Japan?
I am not a man for conspiracies... But the evidence that Nintendo had Gunpei Yokoi assassinated is damning! Why did they suddenly want to meet with him in person after he'd been successfully working on the Wonderswan with Bandai? They had teleconferencing then! Why did the car crash the way it did? Nintendo needs to answer! (I kid... hopefully it's not too much. ....But still...)
New Game & Watches are not Game & Watches. They are shitty retro consoles. They can't function as a watch, they use wasteful backlit displays. The real Game & Watch successor is the Playdate.

Damn you had a cool dad
That’s amazing that you’re dad could do that

This was incredibly comprehensive. I love my Donkey Kong G&W. Love to see one of these on Tiger games.
Thanks so much!
Id like someone to find the codes for those tiger games and port them somewhere. Simple games but I'd spend hours trying to get high scores.

That's quite big
Wowwww
Loved EVERY minute of this video. I used to play a lot of these back in the day and still have them. Donkey Kong was probably my favorite.
These game & watch devices were my introduction to playing Nintendo as a kid and that's why i love Nintendo still play Nintendo today in 2023! Nintendo 4 life!! 🕹️🎮🕹️

Snoopy tennis. I spent hours on that lol. Still about in the loft I expect.
Excellent video, *RD!*
Best summary of these particular devices on UA-cam.
Wow, thanks!
Have also often thought that a complete Game & Watch Collection on the Switch would be pretty awesome, it’ll probably never happen but it would be pretty amazing if it did!
So the game and watch is actually my favorite console of all time and I don't know why, I'm so glad you've done a video on it. Thanks
Excellent work! I got the Donkey Kong dual screen game for Christmas the year it was released.
I owned the orange, 2 screen Donkey Kong as a kid. I remember being able to reset the score by going over the highest possible displayed total.
Wow great video. I had no idea they had those variants which all flopped
Snoopy Tennis. I still have this one. It was from my brother who then passed it on to me
I've got Donkey Kong and oil panic and are still in great working order 🙏🏽

my favourite - great vid rob!
3:35 first handheld gaming device ever made? Mattel Electronics and Coleco rivalry started with the handheld electronic games of the 1970s.
For some weird reason, I can't stop being impressed by your accent.. Dunno why :D

I have a 1977 Merlin electronic baseball game that might have something to say about game and watch being the 'first' portable game...
The game and watch line of systems started in 1980. The microvision came out in 1979

I'd play Flagman.

As a poor kid from Alabama I got the Tiger LCD games instead. Far cheaper, but still fun.
I had Mario's Cement Factory which I loved
A Tetris Game and Watch! I'd buy. 😀😀
Excellent video, but you completely overlooked Game & Watch copies in the USSR in eighties :)
What about the Milton Bradley Microvision
I had Toss-Up, mint in box. Bought it from Tandy (Radio Shack) about 1980. I foolishly sold it on eBay for such a give away price years ago. Stupid. I used to take it to school lol

These look way better than those tiger hand held games
Great video!
Thanks!

Hope they make one with 15 games 😊
I wish they would do one for Punch Out

Why do you look like the male variant of the NPC girl?
