I have that DS dictionary “game” with G&W on it. That thing was a lifesaver when I lived in Japan. This was before smartphones, so you couldn’t point your phone camera at it and have it translate signs for you. Smaller train stations usually wouldn’t have town names in English so I’d have to rely on drawing the kanji on my DS to find my way around.

Gunpei Yokoi is that kind of mind genius that appear once in every generation. He didn't only created Game & Watch but idealized R.O.B. to bring back the interest on games on US, directed the first DK, produced Kid Icarus, created Wario... It's so sad he passed away so early, with the last creation being the Virtual Boy...
didn't he do the gamboy light after the VB? and the wonderswan (maybe not at Nintendo that one)?
Actually, his last creation was the Bandai Wonderswan. His last project for Nintendo wasn't even the Virtual Boy. It was the Game Boy Pocket.
Even then, what we got was really just the prototype, from what I heard. The Virtual Boy was a rush job!

The Game Boy Light was made after he passed on. The Game Boy Pocket was his last Nintendo project.
There wasn't a loss of interest in games, just the US was super conservative and business practices ran it in to the ground and because kids don't have money (and conservatism within the culture dictated that adults generally couldn't find it acceptable to play games at the time, and had to even feel embarrassed to have any knowledge or understanding of them), gaming kinda died off even if people would've enjoyed it. Europe had a similar flood of trash and their gaming industry didn't die off, not sure what to associate that with. They seemed to generally have a much more tech-friendly culture with a focus on general purpose computers with integrated programming environments beginning from the early days, so I guess they weren't banking on one thing.. unfortunately, that kinda lead to there just being a lot of trash games simply because of hardware limitation (and some other bad business practices mostly around reselling some random games some kids wrote after paying them barely anything for it.).

I'm actually really glad at a former local game store called high-tech Game center I got Game and Watch Gallery 4 on the GBA. It's just fun to pick up and play and come back to you later and I love how if you turn off the game while pause you can just continue from exactly where you left off.
you know what's funny? some people were confused by the debut of Mr. Game and Watch in Super Smash Bros. Melee back in 2001 but I actually knew exactly what the thing was because I played that Game and Watch Gallery 2 and 3 for the Game Boy
Game and Watch Gallery games are very underrated. The second one was my personal favorite.

I'm not exactly sure if I could stay the same thing about Brawl as Ike was brought in as a fighter and I don't think very many people were familiar with him because to be honest I don't think a whole lot of people actually played Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance like me. I do think that's really awesome you were ahead of the curve when it came to Mr Game and Watch being added in Melee
You know seeing these games from the era they were created in legitimately feel like anyone who grew up on Tiger Electronics or the like missed out on what these things could really be.
everyone gives LCD games shit because of a lot of the mass produced crap from the 80s and 90s, but there were really good ones here and there, in particular the stuff coming out from Japan, which more then likely were primarily inspired by G&W.
The issue was really more with Tiger, I think they were so prolific with the medium that they really had no choice in some of them turning out less than stellar. It seemed like there was a Tiger handheld version of everything imaginable.
A real testament to how much better G&W machines were is the fact that they still go for hundreds of dollars. Tiger handhelds do not...
@@robintst I think another factor was that Tiger tried to mash more complex pre-established games into an LCD format, as opposed to the Game & Watch titles being original and were made with the limitations of the system in mind.

I think Nintendo should remake the Game & Watch series as apps for mobile devices.
They could sell them for $1-3 or at least have them be Free with you paying for no ads.
I do think also partnering with Hasbro to also rerelease Game & Watch games could also work considering that Hasbro is also rereleasing Tiger Electronic games.
You can buy some them on the 3ds although it be cool to see them on some sort of collection mobile or switch
i rather they do what they are doing with the SMB G&W system and just do a handheld with all of the G&W titles they are able to license from and would work on a standard G&W display.

Okay, a lot of falsities here:
-You don't control a man in Ball, you control a marionette. This is confirmed in the game's instruction manual, which I found here: www.replacementdocs.com/download.php?view.2886
-I don't think Mario Bros. specifically was responsible for inspiring the DS. The Multi Screen series likely was, but most of them open vertically, like the DS, including the first five of them.
-Donkey Kong Circus isn't really a remake of Ball, the gameplay is notably different because each object stays within its lane rather than getting passed back and forth. It has much more in common with Chef, if you want to compare it to something.
-"Mickey & Donald were different versions of two other Game & Watch games titled Egg and Fire, respectively." No, this is completely wrong. Mickey & Donald is one game. It does feature a firefighting theme like Fire, but the gameplay is completely different. Meanwhile, Mickey Mouse (on widescreen) is the game that's mostly identical to Egg.
-Might not've fit the script, but Punch-Out was only known as such in North America--it was Boxing elsewhere. Felt that was worth mentioning.

I feel like Gunpei Yokoi is the unsung hero of Nintendo. Sure people know him for making the Gameboy, and also Game & Watch, but he deserves so much more credit.

The Game and Watch series is honestly underrated, the tech may be outdated but the game design isn't (most of the time). Chef is probably my favorite.

Whats funny about the feather thing in ultimate, is that the guy who first tweeted about being disappointed in nintendo for the stereotype later tweeted that he was joking, but by that time it was to late. The twitter cancel mob already went on their crusade.
I honestly knew about Game & Watch before the release of Melee. Someone had let me borrowed his Game & Watch Gallery 2 in elementary school, and I'd play it for hours. So imagine my absolute shock when I finally did smash the targets only to find GAME & WATCH appear and the stage HELMET APPEAR!
I too learned about Game and Watch from playing the game and watch gallery games on Game Boy before Melee was even released
My first exposure was also Game & Watch Gallery 2. I'm quite fond of Game & Watch, and even used to have a keychain of Mario's Cement Factory.
The only characters I wasn't familiar with in Melee were Marth and Roy. In the original Smash Bros, I was familiar with everyone except Captain Falcon. After those two games, the only playable characters I didn't recognize until their Smash Bros reveals are Lucario, Greninja, Lucina, Robin, Corrin, Shulk, Bayonetta, Chrom, Byleth, Isabelle, and Joker.
Including the Game Watch jingle from that one ad instantly gets my 👍
Game & Watch Gallery 2 was one of my first Gameboy games. So many fond memories with that game.
My dad told me one day he used to own a ton of game and watches in the box when he was a teenager. Unfortunately he can’t find any of them as of right now but he swears to me he had fun playing them as a kid.
When showing/talking about the Crystal Series. A non crystal Series game and watch was shown. The Crystal Screen Series is one of the coolest game and watchs out there.
Dude, I been looking for one a crystal screen game on the market are extremely rare and can fetch up to $1000.
@@Reoko77 yes they are really hard to come by. The Balloon crystal is the most rare and it has a special slide in cover only for that game and watch. The Mario Bros crystal is the second rarest and also cost alot. The last and def not least is the Climber crystal screen. The most common of them and my personal favorite. I've been able to buy the loose unit for around 300 usd. But that price has been rising from what I see.

did the Fire Attack reference get removed prior to shipping out copies? I thought it was announced that it was through a game update early on in its launch that was removed?
Also surprised there was nothing said about the Nintendo Mini Classics line, the 90s re-release of many G&W titles as well as some new games.
Also also, fans in Europe & Australia got an additional GameBoy G&W collection the rest of the world never did (pretty sure even Japan included), called GameBoy Gallery which predated the G&W Gallery series that came later. It featured 5 G&W titles with updated graphics, which would be nice touches to add if they ever want to give Mr. G&W more alternate skins in Smash.
Jeez, it's fascinating to see just how far back Nintendo's history stretches. It's cool to see where they are now.

I had a game watch gallery for Gameboy when I was little i played it alot but didn't know they were old hand held games till way later
I love these games. I still play the galleries from time to time. They're just classic and easy to play.

Always wanted an actual game and watch. I had one of the gbc collections, i put A LOT of time into it. Dont know what i did with the cart... probably been around 20 yrs since i last played it but i find myself wanting to play it frequently. Really satisfied with the new mario game and watch though! Hopefully they make more game and watches.
I had a Mario game from the Game & Watch Crystal series. I remember the case being blue with red buttons, and having a white bezel around the screen.

My mother still has a game watch and for a long time it was the only video game I knew. I remember the game being harder than it looked. Still one of my favourite items of my childhood if it comes to design

There are reissues of the Game and Watch games in form of small Game Boys. Its called Nintendo Mini Classics and since 1998 on the market. The series has some classic and some new games. Last new versions were published in 2014. They even have the arlarm function.
Fun fact: In game and watch’s older smash move set his forward air was a box from the Mario Bros. Game and Watch game, but in smash ultimate whenever Mr. Game and Watch does an attach he turns into that character which is probably a reason why they changed it

Not only is "luh-kee-too" a gratingly awkward pronunciation, it's not the character's Japanese name. That would be "Jugemu."
The hint here is that "tu" is almost nonexistent in Japanese at all, and is never in a Japanese native word. It can only be found in loanwords and phonetic guides to words in other languages. It's very rare even in loanwords, to the extent that if the word was popularized before the 80s or 90s it probably uses "tsu" instead.
Those Game and Watches were so well assembled. Hopefully the one that's coming out has the same aluminum case.
It's a wonder that Nintendo even exists because of Yamauchi and his strange decisions.
That reminds me: it was said several months ago they would rerelease the tiger electronics game this fall!
The feather wasn't fixed before release. It was fixed on a day one patch. I have about 2 hours of footage of it
If I could remember, the patch was released before smash was launched: read some articles talking about game and watch and caused a bit of an uproar in NA

Is anyone else surprised how Game and Watch Gallery music never got into Smash? I honestly wish it did, the title themes are pretty neat.
I had no idea Mr. Game and Watch was a 3D model squished on his z axis. In fact, I didn't even know that there was a z axis to begin with.
The Game and Watch series just had a lot of charm to them that Tiger's lacked. Especially the ones that tried to imitate popular series on more powerful hardware. It's no wonder Nintendo's have such an enduring legacy to them, as the vast majority of them are they're own little games. Plus, they paved the way for handheld game devices as we know them today!

In game and watch gallery 3 it says that fire and ambulance are the same game but backwards because the designer got confused it is just as playable.
