I grew up playing Gospel (and Classical). That is where my jazz playing started. Growing up in Louisiana, I was also exposed to New Orleans Gospel and Jazz, which has a different twist to it. My God is Real is played with more of a Mahalia Jackson and Elvis sacred music style. Just a Closer Walk with Thee is more of an Allen Toussaint New Orleans style. I hope you enjoy it.

I'm swooning over your interpretation of "My God is Real"---sounds like the old Black Baptist Church. So soulful.
"My God Is Real" is a song I sang as a vey young girl from Chicago, Illinois at Pacific Garden Mission down on Skid Row. My late birth father accompanied me on the piano in this exact southern gospel style.Thanks for the time travel back to my musical roots. Jesus is lifted high through the praises Hs children, and music is certainly one of the best ways to give our Heavenly Father praise. You do that so well!

This is such a blessing . Thank you ! We used it as one of the songs on my Dad's memorial slideshow . He was a piano player himself .. reminds me of him. I listen to it all the time when I need music medicine for the soul and spirit.

Every year I come back to this around All Saints Day for inspiration to improvise on “When All the Saints Go, Marching in” especially the 2nd half of “ Just a Closer Walk” then I go listen to some Professor longhair also for inspiration.
You never cease to amaze me! I love it when you do gospel music. You have such an incredible talent. I wish I could hang out with you for about a month and learn some of the great things you do in your playing.

@cryskolt Thanks. Yes. I was fortunate. The classical and gospel were good foundation for jazz.
Both pieces were perfectly executed, in many respects! Piano is very well tuned! Great: clean and crisp tone, rhythm, dynamics, pedaling and very SOULFUL! OUTSTANDING!

Are you kidding me? I've been looking for a teacher like you forever. I'm in NJ and our playing here is rubbish - bass guitars and drums that beat your brains in. This is REAL PLAYING.
+Vic Riz - - - I know what you mean. People on bass guitars just want to blast away. Instead, an upright bass adds the right amount of bottom and rhythm.

1st half demonstrates the wonderful dual personality of a good Steinway ie. how it becomes a different animal above ff when all those bright harmonics blaze forth. but I prefer the trip through the streets of New Orleans (2nd half) .

You did an outstanding job in playing (My God is Real)!!!!!!!! I play it daily will praying. Hope you bless us with more my brother. I play the Hammond B-3 with 122 but did so more in my youth but now don't practice so don't do much on church platform.
