    Took my knackered key case to Timpson for a replacement cover, they wanted £50! No thanks. Bought a case for £4, watched this video & did the job myself in 10mins. Only took 10mins cos my old case needed some tough love to open up, assembling the new case took less than a minute. Thanks Car Key Man!

    I bought a replacement key case, however, I soon found that the new button/pin barrel would not fit into the original key piece, the small pegs on the pin were slightly out, stopping the pin from fully entering the key piece.
    I did notice there is an extremely small roll pin that holds the key shaft into the boss.
    This pin can be drifted out with a tiny punch, or in my case one of those cheap jewellers screwdrivers ground flat on the end.
    Punching out these pins allows you to swap the actual original key shaft into the new boss, so you can then use the new pin.

    • @TheCarKeyMan
      @TheCarKeyMan  6 років тому

      Hi, yes thanks for these comments. Yes the blade can be changed, but we don't because the hinge assembly, the piece that holds the key is already weak. When you start to hit it with a hammer and punch it puts extra stress on the key. However, if you can't find anyone to cut the key, then you do need to swap it.

    • @ludwigvandijk8699
      @ludwigvandijk8699 4 роки тому

      I had the exact same experience, but after (gently) punching out the retaining pin, the original blade did not fit in completely. So the retaining pin could not be tapped back. I still had to use a file to cautiously make it fit, also used my digital caliper to exactly find out where the thickness exceeded the space in the keyholder. Tip: it was on the “back” of the blade. Another tip: fold a piece of paper and put it on top of the battery, this holds the battery in place (so I found out after dropping the new key once, and it didn’t work anymore). Good luck and don’t give up!

    • @TheCarKeyMan
      @TheCarKeyMan  Рік тому

      Hi Ahmad, thanks or watching. The non folding version is a lot more difficult. The problems are that the blade cannot be swapped, so the new case needs to be cut.
      Also, the old case needs opening with a soldering iron and it's very tricky to get the circuit board out, which is a shame

    Thanks for this...saved me £150...when I was quoted price I asked technician if I can pay the 60 for the fob and transfer the circuit board...dude said no it needs to be programmed...bought 2 fobs online for £10...£15 to cut the key cos I didn’t want to use the old blade (I may put it in the spare fob)...total cost £25, saving my ass £125...good maths and god bless the internet!!...I will say that taking apart the original fob was tough, I thought it would come apart easily...I had to snip at it bit by bit with wire cutters whilst holding it in a clamp...😓😓

    • @TheCarKeyMan
      @TheCarKeyMan  5 років тому

      Hi Silva. Thanks for the comment. The thing is that a repair garage will do it by the book. A new key and coded in, and that is correct.
      However, if you're trying to save some money, then the the repair option is also fine. Did you try some circlip pliers to open it?

    • @SilvaBlakk
      @SilvaBlakk 5 років тому +1

      The Car Key Man The Car Key Man thanks for getting back to me...I didn’t know what a circlip plier was till I googled it ten mins ago!!...the clamp I mentioned was a pincer plier which held the fob in place while I snipped at it bit by bit with wire cutters...the opening you said to put the pliers in to open the fob opened up, I removed the blade, the rest of it wouldn’t open and I had to basically “peel” it back then snip carefully so I wouldn’t damage the circuit board...worked out well in the end...your video helped a lot...thanks again Sir...✌🏾✌🏾

      Silvaback - I had the same scenario. A few years back went to Vauxhall agent for a £110 replacement!!! Stuck it in the cupboard until the £4.75 casing arrived off eBay today. Swapped the blade by pushing the roll pin out to fit the old keycut blade. Up and running in less than 20 minutes.

      Hi, well it depends on how you open the old case. The correct way is to use external circlip pliers so that nothing touches the circuit board during the process.
      the problems come when a screwdriver or knife is inserted into the key and damages the chip

    followed the instructions to the letter, but for some reason the blade wont stay retracted - it keeps springing back open on its own when pushed back and and then let go. what have I done wrong??

    • @lidiaprashar6938
      @lidiaprashar6938 4 роки тому +1

      actually, I have sorted it out now. I was trying to replace just the case, using the original key and the original silver hinge the blade slots into to. This wouldn't work - the blade never locked into either the open or retracted position. after carefully looking at the notches on the new silver pivot and comparing with the original hinge, I found they weren't in the exactly the same places , so the original hinge wouldn't match exactly with the new cover I sorted it by swapping my key blade into the new hinge - works brilliantly after doing that. Thank you!

      Hello, sorry I missed your comment. Did you get this sorted out?

    • @Ultimaso6
      @Ultimaso6 7 років тому +1

      Hi, yes i did it. Turns out that the particular key casing i purchased wasn't perfectly alined with the locking grooves on the actual key so it could lock when erect but not when down. I fixed this by using heated metal and burnt the un-alined hole slightly bigger so it could now lock in place. Thanks a lot :)

    I have a 2011 Astra J Sports Tourer 1.4 Turbo and the key fob will not unlock the doors remotely, only by turning the key in the drivers door can I open just that door. Others remain locked but I can then unlock/lock all doors with the dash button from inside the car so I'd assume its not the central locking system itself? Also the fob DOES lock all doors remotely. I tried to reset the key by tuning it the ignition to position 2 and holding a button or both buttons but nothing happens. Any idea what could be causing this? or how I can reset the key? Does it need to be reprogrammed? What would this cost roughly? Thanks in advance for any help offered. (worth mentioning this happens with both of my keys)

      Hi, I know this comment is old and maybe you have fixed the issue with the central control locking. A common issue when changing Vauxhall key battery is that you lose the coding and have to resynchronise the key. All you have to do is put the key in the ignition and turn it two clicks and press the button that will reprogram it to you car.
