It bodes well for showing how he can be attacked emotionally while still being the icon of morality that I want him to be. New social challenges that can't be tanked with invulnerability or punched. Also it seems to be equally interested in the man side of Superman, the small-town boy turned big-city reporter.
I'm a big fan of Superman TAS, so I really enjoyed this comic. It's nice to see classic Superman stories again. This comic run has a lot of potential, and I hope it continues to deliver.

Not to say that chances shouldn’t be taken or shaken up but some stability is appreciated. If this keeps up I’ll read each issue!
As someone who doesn't read the comics, this issue sounds like a great place to start. I watched all of the DCAU as a kid, so that is where I learned of all what I love of DC. Typically, I'd prefer to start at the beginning, but in this case, probably something recent is better. I don't really want to try and catch up on almost a hundred years of comics, so this sounds like a good place as any to jump in. I'm also considering checking out some of the silver age, especially Superman's good friend Jimmy Olsen, sounds fun.
When I read this issue the page with the Polaroids got me, especially the one where Superman arm wrestles the groom. It just tugged on my heart strings for some reason. Also the art is great it feels very effervescent and full of love.
This sounds like a good set up, Lex screwing Clark into doing good against his will is great....also I wonder is Mercy will show the abilities she gained in Lazarus Planet. And I am sooooo glad that the secret identity is back, I wish DC could fix the other thing that Bendis changes about Superman: aging John.
Superman is always a fun read, like comfort food. The art style reminds me of cover art so I like the level of detail. The Shunting... Dead Meat did a great Kill Count of Society, I remember the movie for the actress who was also in Can't Buy Me Love.
The comic didn't really hit with me. I think it should focus more on Lois Lane and her work, her home life, romances, and who she marrys in each issue. If I'm paying five bucks an issue, I better see some crazy good weddings!
"Kidnapped over 100 times" Been reading comics, off and on, since the late 60's and getting back into it now. I've never expected the same continuity logic from comics as I have from any other media. I'm sort of in the "The panel says this is the first time Superman met Flash so, OK, I'll go with it." camp. With over a thousand stories in some of these titles, you have to become a "current-ist?" and simply go with the story in hand and allow past stories to be echoes of maybe. I remember reading one issue where Superman defeated an alien that had stolen Green Lanterns Ring, easily, returning the ring after calling it a trinket. Then, a couple of months later, read the John Byrne reboot where he's wondering if he's carrying the plane or "flying" it. Ultimately the story that should matter must remain the one in hand with continuity having a relevance curve that is steep and drops away quickly over time. With the internet, becoming pedantic about your fandom is all to easy a rabbit hole to fall down.

It's really amazing that you can reference so many of your other videos for additional information. And you started this channel just a few short years ago. An impressive body of work! I love the art by Jamal Campbell, and the story seems pretty good from what I can tell. Now about Lois. I'm out of touch with the modern character. But she used to have a real adventurous spirit that wanted to be where the action is. I don't think old-school Lois would be satisfied as an editor. Of course, a good writer could probably come up with ways to make sure she still sees her share of excitement. She could also decide she's getting older and has had enough on-the-scene action and really settle into the new role. Or she could struggle to find fulfillment in the new situation, decide it's not for her, and step down. They could go a few ways with it. Interesting.
Superman realy is the best superhero in comic book history. He inspires, he saves, the burden he caries is as powefull as are his powers. Truly the best superhero ever.
the only way Superman could perform a wedding would be as a minister, judge, ship captain, or a justice of the peace. Any or all of those would require a form of ID & proof of residency. so, he'd have to reveal his secret identity... again.
Another awesome analysis! I am so glad to see your retrospectives are paying off and those same characters are now appearing in this storyline. Sounds like this is a great jumping-on-point for new Superman fans.
The panel layouts are creative and fun, which is a nice change. The TAS vibe interspaced with some Post-Crisis seriousness is a good choice in storytelling. The colouring for this, while obviously still digital, stands out and looks good. Too bad a lot of the characters look stiff and unappealing, there doesn't seem to be a lot going on in the backgrounds either, more like the "camera" is focusing solely on the foreground.
That memory wipe brain aneurysm things is going to be a major plot point. Some villain/lex will hijackba worldwide communication network, reveal supes identity and then "save" everyone from the brain aneurysm. Then lay the plan all on supes feet
omg, this actually seems good! I'll keep my eye out for a TPB whenever that gets released. Navigating which Superman comics would actually hold my interest has been pretty difficult for the past few years I'm glad so see stuff more my speed getting made.
"Did it work for me?" I don't know, but it's certainly interesting, and after a few more issues I'll decide. This video did cause a lot of Sueprman thoughts/memories (reader since 60s): As I recall, at one point there was a story about Pete Ross learning Superboy's identity, but Superboy didn't know, and Saturn Girl (Legion of Superheroes) didn't erase his memories because someday his knowledge would help him save Clark. I recall Superman's parents being "de-aged", being younger for a time. I can't help but recall Larry Niven's "Man of Steel Woman of Kleenex". (I'm sure you're read, if not...) As always thank you so very much for videos.
I'm all for the Girlboss that is Lois. But I think her power is more as the IDGF who you are, if you are doing something shady, I will find out, and so will Superman. Filling Perry's shoes is a very tall order. Storywise Perry White is the Daily Planet, someone like Lex or Livewire taking over would be interesting but Perry would get his newspaper back. Supercorp, I do love that it is not Superman's thing, but if he doesn't use it, it would mean people, he is brilliant but he's the kind of guy at least to me who would if asked test something that would be dangerous to a normal person but wouldn't bother him like studying the effects of a nuclear explosion. This Supercorp and some of the art style reminds me of when Spider-man was working in a lab. IDK if you noticed it too.
Fantastic art and fantastic story energy. Quick note: Clark is so huge that you'd pick him out as Superman based on sheer volume alone. To hide his identity, Clark needs to start downing protein drinks all day and "casually" (no shade) mentioning an interest in amateur body building,. Cuz I think Jimmy could tie one of Clark's shirts to 2 polls and use it as a hammock. But it's all so fun, you can also let it go. Fun for me at least would be to have Lois lose it at one budget meeting and just sarcastically yell out: "The shareholders, the shareholders, won't someone please think of the shareholders," and then get cricket chirps. Ha! Also, seriously, have Lois called a "woke" choice for editor-in-chief, *while* Lois also starts having a lot of more people telling her what she wants to hear and feeding her ego. Then add more to it with Lois having to decide how clickbait-y and gaslight-y the Daily Planet stories need to be. Not that media on either side do that all the time everyday. Nope. Not at all. There's a lot to explore with Lois, especially with Clark as now head of Lexcorp and them now being a more powerful power couple in various ways.
I admire the bold, daring, though naturally not-always-successful experiments they've been making with Superman in recent years. This new approach looks promising.
Finally, I get a video where your talking about something I actually read too! Not that I don't enjoy watching you talk about comics I haven't read though
This makes me wonder if there's ever been a storyline where Lex really does turn good. Obviously it couldn't last, but it might be interesting to see Lois (and maybe others) convinced it must be a trick while Clark hopes it's really true. And then he'd obviously have to be hypnotised/knocked on the head/mind controlled to turn evil again, because some things just can't ever really change.
Theres doctor lex who is genuinely good but had to lose everything to see the error of his ways, later on he gets some of it back but purposely stays away from certain stuff because its a bad reminder of what he was like before. This lex really is a good guy.
He had a stint as a superhero during the Action Comics Rebirth era. He was an ally of the Super Family and Justice League. He was still Lex but trying to do good in his own way before he got sick of Superman not trusting his genuine attempt to be a hero.
Wow this is actually really good, I'll have to add it to my pull list!! Parasite is my favorite superman villain, and this honestly might be my new favorite rendition of the character! Side note, you're the first person I've seen who can make any color work for them! Haha I love how you change up the theme for each video, you're gorgeous!
[Referring to 12:04] This channel is where most of my comic/specific character knowledge comes from (discovering them on Top 10 Nerd) so when I say I don't know much about Mercy that doesn't mean much (plus I'm not a Superman fan so I miss out on some cool supportings and rogues) but she's one of my favorite characters on the live action Titans show on HBOmax.
algorithmic punch! (Was excited to see Livewire from watching your retrospective and TAS back in the day. The story was fun to jump into, and the art and panel work is as good as you say. Livewire seems to be being pitched as a Joe Rogen/Alex Jones type, and it would make an odd amount of sense for her to sell an "energy" supplement.)
I'm left wondering, why do people feel the need to shake Superman up? Baseline Superman, Clark, Lois, Jimmy, Lex, and the gang are fine. You don't have to lose the secret identity, de-power Superman, make him walk across America, or any of the gimmicky stuff that some writers feel they have to do to make Superman work. People have been making Superman work for like 80+ years now; everyone else could do it, today's writers could too. This is not to say that Superman should be kept from changing in any ways at all. The addition of Jon Kent has really made Superman even better, and I have to admit, I might have dismissed it as a gimmick except that it worked out so incredibly well. But there are some tricks that just never work. Ditching the secret identity means losing the Superman / Clark duality, and getting rid of that has never once made things better. Making Superman hated by the masses has never made things better either. Change for change's sake is foolish; think long and hard about what you would lose with any proposed change.
I enjoyed it, but I attribute it a lot more to Campbell's art and visual storytelling than Williamson's writing. Campbell has always been good and creative but he stepped up his game, even more, this time. I enjoy Clark as a mammoth of a man, lol, and he gives those visuals perfectly. The way he draws action and uses panel borders makes Clark feel incredibly powerful (something like that I've been missing in the Wondy comic for example). He's also a master at showing emotions in my opinion. As for the plot points, they are alright, tbh I'm here because I want to see what the deal is with Marilyn Moonlight. I love her design and I hope there's a cool characterization to go with it. A focus on Lex and Clark working together is fine but I don't need it, while I think having Lois as the Editor-in-Chief is a great idea but not a good job for her. I expect there to be a Lois subplot and I hope I'll get it.
I kinda fell out of these once the New 52 got going but this has got my attention again for Superman in a way it hasn't been since J Michael Straczynski did his Earth One stories.

There were no ads other than on the covers, which was also refreshing.
The second I turned on my iPad this showed up in my notifications. 10/10 timing
I absolutely love the art here. It’s so warm
the only way Superman could perform a wedding would be as a minister, judge, ship captain, or a justice of the peace. Any or all of those would require a form of ID & proof of residency. so, he'd have to reveal his secret identity... again.
I miss the "The mild mannered reporter from a great metropolitan newspaper and his never ending battled for Truth, Justice and the American way."
My favorite part with this issue: no ads.
omg, this actually seems good! I'll keep my eye out for a TPB whenever that gets released. Navigating which Superman comics would actually hold my interest has been pretty difficult for the past few years I'm glad so see stuff more my speed getting made.
The moment I saw Livewire in the comic I thought of you and your wonderful retrospective 😂
Loved the who issue, the art was amazing and the tone, hopeful, light, actual Super stuff...a breath of fresh air all around.
This sounds like the perfect jumping back in point for me. I grew up on superman tas and I adore the art you showed. Sold!
It was such a good issue and I loved the how filled and how much story was packed in 9/10 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Parasite? Evil. Parasite with cargo shorts? Super Evil.
"Did it work for me?" I don't know, but it's certainly interesting, and after a few more issues I'll decide.
This video did cause a lot of Sueprman thoughts/memories (reader since 60s):
As I recall, at one point there was a story about Pete Ross learning Superboy's identity, but Superboy didn't know, and Saturn Girl (Legion of Superheroes) didn't erase his memories because someday his knowledge would help him save Clark.
I recall Superman's parents being "de-aged", being younger for a time.
I can't help but recall Larry Niven's "Man of Steel Woman of Kleenex". (I'm sure you're read, if not...)
As always thank you so very much for videos.
This is what new 52 superman should've been from the start.
Having Lex turn over Lexcorp to Clark is so very Angel S5 when Angel was given Wolfram & Heart after Angel stopped an apocalyptic event.
Holy smokes, that artwork is gorgeous. Definitely gonna have to pick this up.
I'm super invested in seeing how it plays out, I love what they did with the panels!
I'm counting down the days for a Livewire vs Punchline Social Media War now. It maybe low hanging fruit but, it's just too tempting to pass up.
I kinda love the way Clark is drawn here. He's so huge and hunched over it reminds me of Mr. Incredible
Lex hologram made me laugh. The way Luthor disrespected Jor-El 💀
I cannot stop looking at Mercy's arms, help
I love Superman TAS, I’ll check this out
Sasha, DC should be paying you as their best salesperson. You have sold me on this issue. I will be buying it on your recommendation.
Wow - the art in this is beautiful! I might have to start reading this again.
This Supercorp storyline sounds like a redux of Season 5 of Angel. But it was the best season of Angel, so here's hoping it works for Superman!
Just read it and my goodness. This issue gave me them Superman TAS vibes!
Finally, I get a video where your talking about something I actually read too! Not that I don't enjoy watching you talk about comics I haven't read though
I'll always remember Mercy best for getting casually murdered by Lex during the Death of Superman event; just because he could. Harsh.
noticed the starman compendium in the background... underrated and amazing run😊
You've peaked my interest. I'll check out this book now.
Yeah, he was a good guy for a while after 52.
I saw Society when it was featured on the Last Drive In on Shudder. You could not get away with showing the end of that on youtube for sure!
I stopped reading with Bendis, but this was such an incredible issue. Can't wait for this dynamic!
I love the art. It looks similar to Stjepan Sejic's style which is pretty much my favourite.
Huh, now that you mention it! Not quite enough complicated expressions 🥴 but the same sort of pastel lighting and thin colored lines...
This is my new favorite comic book youtube channel! You really know your stuff
Yo this is a great start to supes new series, I like to think the song Clark is listening to is ...And justice for all
9:05 - It's the Mammal Pod from Metal Gear!
algorithmic punch!
SuperCorp is canon!
Instead of sporting her DCAU look, they redesigned Mercy to resemble Sasha.
I liked it. It was fun and the art really made Lois and Mercy quite fetching.
Oh this seems pretty fun, maybe I will check it out
I'm left wondering, why do people feel the need to shake Superman up?
5:40 I love how you refuse to forgive Lois for this
I enjoyed it, but I attribute it a lot more to Campbell's art and visual storytelling than Williamson's writing.
I want to know what's on Clark's mix-tape, lol!
I am irrationally bothered by the lack of the third Trinity volume on your shelf.
Complete the Trinity, Sasha!
Just read it this week and it feels like the Supes that I grew up with! AWESOME!
Looks great. Will wait for the trade.
I kinda fell out of these once the New 52 got going but this has got my attention again for Superman in a way it hasn't been since J Michael Straczynski did his Earth One stories.
Did anyone identify the other villains on the monitors: I think I saw Parasite, Silver Banshee, Bizarro, Livewire, Lobo and possibly Atomic Skull and Toyman. Anyone identify the red headed woman?
