Grover Cleveland's brother, William, was my great great grandfather. My grandfather met Grover once when he was a toddler, but he didn't remember the visit. However, Cleveland's wife, Frances, who my grandfather referred to as "Great Aunt Frank", stayed in contact until the end of her life. In fact she and her second husband attended my grandfather's wedding in 1926.

One of my favourite quotes on Cleveland started when Blaine supporters started mocking Cleveland having an illegitimate child by chanting, "Ma, ma, where's my pa?" After Cleveland won, his supporters started chanting back, "Gone to the White House, ha, ha, ha!" Stone cold.

    • @Clipgatherer

Cleveland’s supporters also had their chant:
“Please, please burn this letter. James G. Blaine.

As a Hawaii college student in the early 1990's, I was given the assignment to choose any presidential speech and deliver it in class. Most the students selected either a favorite or a recent inaugural address. However, there was one outstanding individual who delivered a speech that stood apart and ahead from all the others. His speech was that of President Grover Cleveland.
What made his presentation so memorable was that it was a passionate plea by President Cleveland to NOT ANNEX the Hawaiian Islands into the United States of America. The speech was filled with numerous reasons why annexation would become problematic for both the local natives and the U.S. After hearing this well delivered speech, I was more than impressed with Grover Cleveland's remarkably clear vision of the unforeseen problems that first annexation and then American statehood would surreptitiously bestow upon Hawaii's native shores.

@@JohnWayneCheeseburger It's nothing against you, but I personally disagree, whole you can't become head of state ( not including dynasties ) without wanting it, Grover Cleveland didn't have the presidency as his main goal in life. Ambition is really wanting something and going out to get it, while he did work, it didn't mean he was necessarily ambitious, he likely wouldn't have been upset with himself if he was never given the chance to be president.
Then what you said about the script writer. Simon Whistler purposefully evades trying to push false narratives, watch hid video on Alan Turing and James Buchanan for a better understanding of this, he's interpreted it a different way to you ( a Historian is meant to look at facts, and draw a conclusion, since ambition cannot be proved, naturally people will disagree on it ).
like I said, this doesn't mean you're wrong, this is just his interpretation of the facts, and you can have yours, it does not call for an argument, because realistically, very few people will listen to you or me, or Simon.

I wouldn't go so far as to say this video is pushing a false narrative I just disagree with some fine points on the aspect of a long dead mans personality whom I never met so maybe they are entirely correct and I am entirely wrong thats the great thing about history, study and reassment and then better understanding.

In Junior Year of High School when I took APUSH, the hardest test was the President's test. We had to from pure memory all 44 presidents at the time was President Barrack Obama's second term recite the President from Washington to Obama, recite the running mate, and recite the party. Written, 20 minutes. Me and my Best Friend Max both got 100%. Nobody with that teacher, Ms. DeChristopher was her name, had gotten a 100% on the test. Grover Cleveland or James K. Polk are my favorite presidents to learn about, however my favorite President is George Washington.

    Future Video suggestion -
Eamon DeValera (1882-1975) - prominent political leader in 20th century Ireland who, after the Irish war of independence from 1919 to 1921, was in the public eye for over forty years from 1922 until his death were he served as head of government (Taoiseach) and head of state (president). He was nearly executed in the Easter Rising in 1916 and was key in putting into place the new constitution on 1937. A very prominent figure in Irish history.
