    I simply love her pronunciation of EACH word. So few singers focus on articulation, thinking the melody will carry the song, thinking as long as THEY know the lyrics, who cares about the audience. Not Carol Burnett. Throughout her entire career she showed respect for the audience AND the lyricist by articulating each word flawlessly. And I salute her for that! Spectacular rendition of this iconic song here!

      Thats exactly the thrust of the whole Sondheim catalog though. Oversing this work and it will destroy you... hell i know its literally impossible to oversing some of this stuff, nobody alive has the breath.

    Since I am older than death, I remember the first time Carol Burnett sang this song on her Variety show. She was doing her cleaning woman skit, with the bucket, rags etc. She sat down on the edge of the stage and let loose with this. It was one of those electric moments that defined early T.V. and I was stunned by her performance. I am happy to have the chance to hear her sing this again.

      Sheila Gish "Company" The Donmar,1995; Olivier a Best Supporting Actress in a Musical. Not much more than this song. Stole the show, believed she WAS drunk. Carol Burnett gives great Sondheim, hysterical; acting every syllable. But "In Concert" I believe. Playing so much for every laugh may not work in every production, but still always my favourite.

    I would imagine Carol's performance was colored by both her parents being alcoholics. Her experiences, especially with her mother, would have given her a special insight into how she would present Joanne.

    Carol was absolutely brilliant here. Her voice, her emotions, her presentation and her rendition .... she was so damn good, that words fail me. I see below, (though it's many years since it was posted), that someone's comment expressed their feelings that Carol takes this song "to a different level". I couldn't agree more. I doubt that Carol would have ever even seen these comments, But she was fabulous - and is definitely a talented and much-loved national treasure.

    • @AndrewMacLaine
      @AndrewMacLaine 5 років тому +1

      I hope you do try out for one! Doing a musical can be a wonderful time no matter how big or small your role! I love this song, too. There is a saying, however, in musical theatre: never audition using a Sondheim song. They are usually more challenging to sing, mostly due to the timing of the way you sing the lyrics. And accompanists often have difficulty playing his peices reading the music cold.
      If I may suggest to look for an audition song that showcases your voice well and is easy enough that you dont have to worry too much about getting lost. I find an easy method is to look at the role or show you are going for, and sing something that they would sing, but from a different play.

    Joanne is a qualified drunk...one who can hold their booze and keep most of the 'sober' facade. She does this well, in that you only see the impact of the boozery at the ends of phrases. She's 'in control' until a bit of emotion gets past that wall, then she can't control it and the smirk comes out. Well done.

    I wonder if she were just coming on the scene today what would be said? Things like...
    "Oh she must have had a bad childhood and has emotional issues because she hides her immense singing talent behind the smile of comedy.... Well, she did have parents who drank, so I wonder what she felt when she sang this tune. Perhaps she was just always trying to make folks smile during stressful times so she turned to comedy.... "
    Well, she didn't come up now, she arrived on the scene then, when we all could simply enjoy everything she brought to the stage/screen. What was said then was simply "Wow, isn't she talented?". Let's keep it like that, because that is the bottom line.
    I loved her then, and I love her now.
    She is a real show stopper however you categorize her.

I DO agree with you about the "Follies" concert, though she sang fine, there were a couple of points where she was off key.
