- Wayne Rooney is the new Plymouth Argyle manager. The Manchester United and England legend had a dreadful time managing Birmingham City in the EFL Championship this season but is straight back into the division in the South West with Argyle. Let me know your thoughts in the comments...

I really like Plymouth (Ipswich fan), I hope Rooney does well, I really do. The fans don't deserve this they're class people. So for their sake I hope Rooney succeeds
I feel sorry for Plymouth fans
Argyle fan here, I was thinking the same but have actually changed my mind overnight, he could very well do well for us! we ended up bottom of the League bar the 3 who were relegated so any result better than that is a bonus... I hope he gets Whittaker and Hardie to stay and brings in a feeder for them...
@@UnexpectedJourney59Eng honestly I wish you all the best for next season but Rooney has a lot to learn about managing
@@EnglishICE thanks lad
Argyle fan here. Well said. God help us all
@@UnexpectedJourney59EngI hope for your sake he is better, considering he is responsible for 2 relegations I just pray he has learned a thing or two
As an Argyle fan, I'm quite excited. Yes, his record hasn't been great, but he's not often, if at all, had a chance to recruit his own players. It's a gamble for sure, but it will reflect upon Neil Dewsnips recruitment, and if he fails, then Dewsnip shall have to answer to it. If Rooney does well, it'll raise the profile of Plymouth Argyle no end. As a club, we're not expecting to get promoted any minute soon, it's a low pressure job. I have a good feeling about this!
He needs to learn how to be a manager so Argyle are perfect, he'll have less pressure on him, no pressure to get promoted. He's at a stable club with no risk of bankruptcy. He will do well I'm sure and may even surprise a few
Love to come back to these comments in a years time when Plymouth are promoted 😂
But sadly, you won't.
As an Argyle fan, I am hoping that he will prove his true worth once he has a pre-season and transfer window to work with. He has never actually been able to make a signing as at Derby he had a 21 pts deduction and a transfer embargo, and at Birmingham he was sacked before he had a transfer window there too.
Fair points. My Aunty lives in Plymouth so best of luck hope it works out.
Thats not correct. He made 11 signings at derby. 5 free agents and 6 loanees. At dc united they made 15 signings in his 15 months there. 4 of them from england. Benteke was one of them. Got that from googling it. Also if he starts throwing the players under the bus like he did at brum then what is so different to what foster did to the dressing room?
As a manager, he doesn't have any worth.
Dreamer
Argyle fan here, He will bring alot of media attention to us which may bring a bit of investment from somewhere. If we get relegated he will say he tried but it was always going to be too big a hill to climb. If we stay up he starts to become an Argyle Legend. I think we are in for a ride, but I for one are behind him. we hope he brings a couple of extra coaches from him and maybe a couple of Kobbie Manoo from United on loan lol
problem is mate its negative press as we found out at Birmingham
The only ride Plymouth will be on is oblivion a poor appointment by the owner he's not being responsible for the interest of the club and fans
As a Birmingham Fan I'm worried for Plymouth - however this time at least he gets a pre-season and can have some say about players bought in.
Fellow bluenose here...I still think they're fucked
Let’s be honest the players at Blues didn’t really give their all for him every game did they. They showed in the last game against Norwich exactly how good that team could be when they dig in and give one hundred percent.
Is it just me that thinks he might actually have a chance at Plymouth? Derby and Brum are both basket cases with crazy owners whereas Plymouth are pretty well run. Hope it works out for him.
I think the same and I hope he does well. He gets so much undeserved abuse when to me he seems like a really nice, mild mannered bloke.
Like most Argyle fans, I was sceptical but I think this could be a master stroke by Simon Hallett. Rooney is box office, we need investment and he has the clout, especially in the US market, to garner the interest. It will be a rollercoaster for sure and it’s guaranteed to keep us in the news, whichever way it goes. The difference with his previous roles though - he’ll be given time and he’ll get the backing of the board. COYG!!
There's talk that this is a key move for (rumoured) dutch investment.
Also he actually gets a transfer window this time.
Master stroke what the hell are you on,this has nothing to do with Hallet hes not even running the club Dewsnip is!
Four scouse managers and it's all down to Dewsnip it's all become a joke as we will this season
As an Argyle fan - I first heard rumours about this yesterday (Friday).
My first thoughts were that Rooney was terrible manager (using the Brum context only) and that it was clearly a done deal. However, the longer I have had to process this - the happier I have felt about it. Rooney saught out this job - possibly due to his assocation with Neil Dewsnip - our DoF. He is the power behind the throne at Argyle - he has guided us from behind the scenes to 2 promotions and stepped in himself to keep us up this season. He is also Rooney's former coach - so Rooney will find taking direction from him - natural.
Finally - Rooney passed his first giant hurdle - when interviewed - he referred to us as "Argyle" not "Plymouth"
So - I agree totally with @BenjaminBloom. Worst case - next season we stay where we were (bottom 10 all season). Best case - it clicks (possibly with some links Rooney can pull for signing players) and we become a midtable "safe" team - for next season anyway.
As a Birmingham fan I'd include another possibility...Likely case - relegation...
That’s a shame I liked Plymouth…
Rooney must have a really impressive line of bullsh1t. I hope for Plymouth's sake that it works out.
I completely agree with you Ben about Rooneys time at Derby
We Plymouth fans will automatically give whatever manager is appointed our complete and utter support. He doesn't have to earn it - but he has to keep it ! How he presents himself, represents the club, supports his players builds rapport with the fans and the style of play all count in our book.
Good luck... Every club he's "managed" have been relegated 😂
Complete bollocks just because your wearing the green tinted specs dont think all the rest of us are,Dewsnip is now a big fuckin problem at Argyle hes got to go this board in its present form is done
I live in plymouth and to be honest all the poseur man utd fans will love this
What a man super Wayne took the noses down my hero UTV
A very brave appointment by Plymouth. And fair play to Rooney diving straight back in despite (justified) criticism.
My instinct says this will end poorly given his recent record, but you never know.
By brave you mean moronic
There is a fine line between bravery and stupidity
@@paulhughes8732 hahaha indeed. I guess we will see which side of the line they come out.
He is worth a punt he never signed a single player at either club and you are right he will get a clean slate here, Fact of the matter is with some comments relegation imminent the fact is there was probably a 75% chance we would struggle this season anyway so them type of comments is like water off a ducks back. The positives are that if the gamble pays off the club and Rooney will be rewarded as such.
That is a big IF though.... he hasn't proved himself as a manager so far... there is always a first time.
Lets give him a chance, see what players he gets in
think there was a negative response initially, but now people have got their heads around it I think the green army are up for it. . get behind him and get a few decent players signed
Bad luck Plymouth. "No fear football"😂
Gave Derby and the MLS a pretty good shot.
Birmingham was bad, but that wasn't all Rooney. He was told to make sweeping changes and he did.
Good luck... especially to Argyll fans! 😃
As you know Benjamin, I'm an Argyle fan, and I'm probably one of the few that is actually genuinely excited about the appointment. Why? He hasn't been able to sign players at Derby (financial reasons) or Birmingham (didn't get a transfer window). Simon Hallett is a great Chairman who has got so much right for Argyle. A high profile appointment such as Rooney will help us with getting investment into the club, and will enable him to have the best chance of success. The simple fact is he has to be successful at Argyle if he wants a career as a manager, and if he's going to succeed anywhere, it could be Argyle.
Give the dude a chance definitely im quite happy about it, he doesn't need the money he actually wants the job which is massive, I got a sneaky feeling hell surprise the haters, was a world class player and has been in many a good dressing room with good managers, clean slate for him and us, coyg
Argyle fan! I love my club , im a massive Wayne Rooney fan,and ill be backing our new head coach 100%. Just coz he did poorly at Birmingham dosent mean he wont work our at plymouth! Hes the highest profile manager/head coach we ve ever had, i belive he has a point to prove from his time at birmingham. Wayne Rooneys appointment will also put argyle fairly and squarly on the map with potential investment more of a possibility. Welcome to Argyle gaffer i belive in you!!💚💚
Rooney was awful last 6yrs as a footballer and is a terrible manager, and you will be saying the same after he has been there a couple of months, I feel really sorry for you guys-- from a Derby fan
@@paulbaddiley7326 Thank you for you comment. Time will tell i guess.
You forgetting Shilton, Alison??
Are u mental
there is a lot of negativity made about him from a lot of Plymouth fans.however Rooney is now head coach at argyle.he has coaching staff who are already at the club of which one is Kevin nancekivell who is known as mr argyle.we need to give him a chance and judge him on his results. im sure with the staff and players he will have at his disposal and the players who will love working with him.a lot of fans didn't want him as manager but they have to get behind him and the players and just hope that we can improve on last season.
Love this Ben, the comments here are as expected and your opinion is as respectful and well judged as always. I will say though that this is probably the last chance for Rooney to really prove himself at Championship level. Another Birmingham (as everyone expects in the comments everywhere) and it will be difficult for him to get another job. Plymouth fans should wait and see though and not be so negative, Hopefully it means he won't be a permanent member of the Overlap team too, he's really not articulate enough for that.
I know some fans may snigger but honestly this is the best job he's had if he finishes 4th bottom he's fine anything above that is a bonus. Argyle are already favourites for the drop without Rooney I think this maybe the job out of the way he needs however he needs to drop the bouncer and embrace the Janners and he will do well if he doesn't he will be like Foster and out the door quickly
As you said
Plymouth is out on a lim
With WR we now have mentions in the media all of a sudden
Your team is a classic example of media exposure
When we won D1 with 101pts all the media were saying how good Ipswich are even though they finished behind us and we hardly got a mention
So with WR at the helm we at last will get a bit more exposure and i hope that will bring in investment
I have a feeling that WR wants to invest in Argyle and perhaps do a Wrexham
I'm pleased for him, and pleased for Plymouth. He did a brilliant job at our good friends and neighbours Derby, for the reasons you said. Let's not forget when he first took over they were headed down and he kept them up. Second season he turned up to preseason training with 6 players, and had to build a competitive squad under a severe transfer embargo. As a Forest fan I was looking forward to them ending up with a record low points total once they had the 21 points deduction - in the end it was a miracle that they went into the final stretch of that season with a chance of staying up. Without the deduction they'd have been easy mid table. It went wrong at Brum (though it didn't go right after he was sacked), but we really shouldn't be writing young English managers off after one setback. Fair play to him for taking a job that other big names would turn their nose up at, good luck to him.
Any "success" Derby had during that time was down to Liam Rosenior's tactical acumen, not Rooney.
@@MrMmnngghh If you know that for certain you know more than me. If it's true it's also true lots of managers get their best results with an assistant who has complimentary skills, so I'm not sure it's a black mark against Wayne, rather than just something that prompts questions about the team he's going in with.
When it was first rumoured to be happening, my gut reaction was no, not in a million years, based on his performance at Birmingham City last season. However, having thought about it, I've started to change my mind. He did well at Derby. If they hadn't been deducted 21 points, they'd have stayed up comfortably. They didn't even finish bottom with that points deduction. He was dropped into Birmingham AFTER the summer window had shut and asked to play a certain way. That didn't work, as he may not have had the players suitable. He was sacked on 2nd Jan, 1 day after the window opened, so no opportunity to get players in and make the improvements he may have thought they needed. Now he is appointed, he's got pre-season to set things up properly, improve the squad and hit the ground running. There's also rumours Mike Phelan could be coming as assistant, who's got plenty of experience. Tom Huddlestone, who's just left Man U U21s, has also been linked.... He will have my support until the time comes when it's difficult to, like it did with Foster...
He's gonna be big for us
Rooney actually kept Plymouth up last season when you really think about it. He imploded Birmingham. The team that took Plymouths relegation place in the end.
Mike phelan is being linked to being Rooney assistant manager so i give him a clean slate
Whenever is been possible to be relegated Wayne has made it happen
Good podcast Ben. I am trying to be positive about Rooney's appointment. Give the lad a break. It is pathetic to be negative.
Let's see how it goes. Can he get a team spirit going and not expect his players to perform at Premier league standard ? He has seen how Ferguson did at Man U but this is a different ball game. Mckeena at Ipswich has used what he learnt at Man U and adapted it to the players he has available, albeit those players are a step up from those at Argyle. I sincerely hope he can attract a few affordable good players to improve the squad, which is what Dewsnip thinks he will be useful for.
I heard stories from a reliable source that at Birmingham they had to send a taxi round on match day to collect Rooney as he was too drunk to drive himself.
...on match day.
As a Argyle fan I'm not happy but we have to give him a chance
they go down with him
Hardly a shock ,,news 2 days ago ,,,commiserations to the Plymouth fans 😬
Let’s play no fear football,no fear of winning repeat
Great news for the economy in the Millbay area of the city
Thanks Ben, I think we're going to do an Ipswich next Season under Rooney ;)
Rooney❤❤❤❤❤
This is probably his last chance to establish himself as a manager. Few elite players (which Rooney was, whatever you think of him) make it in club management because it's a totally different job with its own demands and challenges. Credit to him for wanting to have another crack at management but if things don't work out at Plymouth he should take the hint and realise club management is not for him.
I think it will work out ok for next season because the expectations will be survival again. Let’s see if he’s learned anything from his time with my club Birmingham. I actually liked what he tried to do but the players wasn’t good enough to do it on a regular basis.
Am i happy about the appointment ? No ... but does that mean im not going to give him a chance? No ...
Leeds fan here boys get ready for the Farley attack lol
Leicester fan here , do you think u will win play offs
Big Blue nose here and I would just like to say....haha........ Rooney-Ball coming your way! You are in for a ride.
Somebody said Wayne's got an 'Easter Island' head...Bound to fail. Give it to Christmas.
To correct your statement Ben. He has been taken on as Head Coach not Manager to help towards his intended managerial experience. He is not our Manager in the terms of what a managers position involves. All very strange if you ask me. He was heard bantering with Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer at the side lines of the FA Cup final today. They said about getting him on the show when he was managing a high enough tier club...to which he said QUOTE: See you next year then. I hope he is right. Stranger things have happened and the Green Army have to now get behind the appointment with crossed fingers. Argyle till I die.
Yeah and this head coach shite is another whopper from Parsnip, how many more scouse mates is he going to employ ,sorry but this board and especially Parsnip have run its course it's just a joke now
Dear oh dear
I'm always of the opinion just because it doesn't work at one club doesn't mean it work out at another club. Sometimes managers just pick the wrong club.
Or in his case THREE clubs. 🤷♂️🤦♂️
@@leslieaylett5375 No one would of done a better job at Derby at the time because of the mess they were in. He left DC United because he wanted to return home. He hasn't had any success but you can say he hasn't been given a opportunity or time ag a club to do anything
Ipswich fan here and appointments like this make me feel our current uncertain circumstances aren’t that bad in the greater scheme of things.
League one incoming for Plymouth.
Instant relegation for you boys , championship incoming
@@argyle83 You have to give these appointments a chance. As fans you have no choice but too, hope he does well for you guys. You’re not Blues, get behind your team and give it a good do that’s all any fan can do.
@@mitch0078 I am behind him and my team , never said I wasn’t it was the Ipswich fan saying we are getting relegated not me 🤷🏻♂️
Damn, we missed him.
Madness
Plymouth must be over the moon 😂😅😂 the bookies are cutting odds as we speak 😂 and stop laughing Ben 🤣
What has Southgate ever achieved as a manager, apart from relegation in his only job.
Yet he's managing England, why ?
Rooney has a better record.
He's great at getting clubs out of the championship. I saw enough of his management here in Maryland at DC United to know this won't end well.
As a Plymouth supporter I just do not understand what the board were thinking, Rooney says he was the best man for the job that’s why he got it. No way, I believe he paid Argyle to hire him, feel sorry for those experienced managers who were proven managers.
They wouldn’t come. Plymouth is the back of beyond for too many of them. Schumacher buggered off up north as soon as he got the chance.
As an Argyle fan I will give him a chance and support him. If he is proved unsuccessful then I hope the board sack him sooner rather than later. I do think that we need to get rid of Dewsnip as some of his recent decisions are questionable.
Another hatrick for Wayne? Really hope he has learnt from his previous experiences at Derby and Brum. If he manages to hold onto Whitaker they could be safe again.
Either going to be horrendous or an inspired decision. My hunch is that the structure and general stability at Argyle may allow Rooney to grow into the role.
They must've been really unhappy about missing relegation this season, so doing their best to achieve it next!
I think Plymouth might be a good fit for Rooney
The amount of negative comments about our chances next season is purely embarrassing imo Ben, just because of his terrible spell at Birmingham. I get why 100% but at the same time, don’t you think these players will want to fight for the badge as well. Which is something only 2 players did at Birmingham (Stansfield and Bacuna). I can’t lie Ben yes this is 100% a risky move (I mean you’ve got to take risks at times in football don’t you) and Dewsnip will get some stick if this ends up disastrously but come on Look, he deserves another chance. He’s certainly not coming for the money, he will be coming for success. If he fails then his managerial career is over. Adding to this, the contacts he has and the management team he could bring with him, could be huge, this could be huge. Yes his time at Birmingham was very poor but he didn’t have a whole summer to recruit and invert the players to how he wants them to play. Plus people forget that had Derby not had those off field problems and points deduction, he would’ve kept them up and that would’ve all been down to him. He deserves another chance. Birmingham were top 6 when he joined and he couldn’t push from there. I’m happy with a mid table finish meanwhile next season, whether it’s 12th all the way down to 18th, because it then means we’re in the Championship again for 2025/26, and I’m thrilled with that. As long as we don’t go down then this is good because then at least Simon Hallett’s 5 year plan is not in the mud
Anyways, in Wazza we trust 👌🏻
Wazza at the wheel 🫡
Oh dear😩
Rooney head hunting himself. And it paid off.
One of the worst managers we have ever had. Destroyed everything that Eustace had put in place. This is his last chance at this level.
I'll send you my condolences 1 year in advance........ Gutted for you going down to League 1...
After 10 games you will know whether he will last
The Plymouth job will show him up more for his ability as a manager. He'll be bringing in his own players, therefore more responsible for his actions than at the Blues. This is last chance salloon, if he makes a pigs ear of this one, i think a window cleaning business may be a better option.
Sir Alex Shrek will take Plymouth to league one like he did with Blues 😂
Some managers suit certain clubs it might be the case here.
Without Wednesday's points deduction he would have been relegated with Derby in the 1st season. Looking purely at stats, he hasn't had a good career so far. If he does well at Plymouth it will be slightly surprising.
However you look at it, Rooney was a disastrous appointment at Birmingham. A lot of the blame has to go in the owners for replacing a successful and popular manager and backing Rooney to play no fear football. Maybe Rooney learnt to be a bit pragmatic. Rooney will definitely do better than he did at Birmingham when he has a preseason, brings in his own players and has a better board to work under. If he fails at Plymouth, you'd imagine that it would be his last chance. I wouldn't be surprised if he were midly successful.
Get ready for the famous erm erm erm interviews 😞
You can defend him at Derby but there it stops
That’s the reward for the Green Army staying up! That’s like Ron Atkinson coming to Leicester if Enzo goes…..
No no obo 😢😢😢😢
Plucky Plymouth deserve better 🥹
Well if he screws this up he definitely isn’t a manager, I hope for Plymouth he doesn’t send them down like he did at Birmingham
Lobotomy for sensible Plymouth
Wave bye bye to the Championship!
Huddersfield fans said the same(a bad move) about darren moore when he came to my beloved vale, and they were right we were relegated,,,so i fear for plymouth, hope i am wrong, but i doubt it
OMG‼️ Did the Titanic leave Plymouth on it’s maiden voyage❓
Sending thoughts and prayers to Argyle 🙏
Let’s face it,he’s at rock bottom in management,so no one’s rates him which might work in his favour, only problem is wazza won’t have the funds and ambition at a club like Plymouth to reach the top.
Two jobs in the championship, both clubs relegated, failed to make play offs once in the MLS, this isn’t ending well.
A Snowman will last longer than Rooney at Argyle !!!!!!!!!
I can tell you who else is back in the Championship,.. and that's Leeds. Lol
UTT
I hope Rooney proves them all wrong.
I’m glad Plymouth stayed up, not so sure about next season
I hope I'm wrong but under Rooney, Plymouth could well sink quicker than the Spanish armada.
What do clubs see in Rooney as good management material 🤔, I just don't see it myself!!! Good luck for next season with Rooney in charge 👍...WAWAW
Failed at Derby
Failed at DC United
Failed at Birmingham
History will repeat itself. Worst manager I have EVER witnessed as a Birmingham fan
He's obviously bought the club, best of luck
Got to be a performance based deal.Brave from both sides but if paying him off means a fire sale and relegation,he's done in the EFL
What did Plymouth fans do to deserve that? They could very well be looking for a new manager around Christmas time?
