Yeah, it was a more "adult oriented" version of Batman, rather than trying to go over the top, it tried to focus on more "realism" and more grounded stories and a more realistic depiction of a wealthy billionaire on a vengence streak without making Bruce feel cartoonishly deadpan. A lot of the villains ultimately help him slowly realize the fine line between being a vigilante and being a hero and it's through the way he defeats his enemies that seem permanent but sees the reaction of others around him that he kind of humbles himself and develops his "maybe everyone does deserve a second chance...." especially Harvey Dent, his best friend and one who he blames himself for his spiral and ultimate death. and seeing Barbara crying over the alleged death of Harleen and seeing Batman issue the very rare "I'm sorry...." to Barbara as he realizes trying to convince Barbara Harleen deserved to die made him look like the psychopath. Especially given he raided her office.

I agree, the realism and more grounded stories of this series makes it easier to connect with the characters' emotions and motivations. Additionally, it combines that authenticity from Matt Reeve's Batman and more of the art deco comic book style from Batman The Animated Series.

The DC canon world's greatest detective is actually a character named Detective Chimp.

Yeah, I think they've worked together a few times in comic books. But, I definently remember an episode of Batman: The Brave and The Bold, where they worked together to solve a case.

It's definitely not as good as Batman The Animated Series, I don't think anything could top that series.
