I’m not a huge Bill Maher fan, but his voice is truthful as he sees it and we don’t get a lot of that these days with corporate consolidated America. This visit it almost seems to be with Martin Short is special because there is real understanding and warmth between these two and you get a real glimpse into both of them. Unlike most interviews which involve promotion, topical ratings humor, and one upsmanship this is actually human and spirited. Awesome clip.
Be sure and check out the one with Bill Maher and Martin Short with guest hosts James Carville, Mike Murphy, etc. I'm not great with Bill Maher either, but this is the first clip I saw, and fell over on the floor I was laughing so hard! Even funnier than this one. Hysterical! These days, I decided to dial up all of the Martin Short videos (love the ones with Conan) because this humor is so clever right now. He is positively genius!
just finished reading the book it is fabulous. in the top 10 of more than 350 autobiographies and biographies i've come across. very poignant, respectful, full of backstage tidbits and love of life despite the pitfalls.
his wife too. That is probably why he stopped his talk show prime time glick. Made me tear up when he said he wrote the book to keep her fresh in his mind.
I can speak from experience regarding the loss of people who are close to you in your life, I've lost my entire family who have disowned me in the past few years due to my atheism and political perspectives... I lost my two closest and dearest friends of over 40 years within a few years of each other, and when I found myself unemployed and homeless the majority of my friends turned their backs on me... The thing is though, you have to maintain a positive attitude and keep your sense of humor about everything, because the only other option is giving up great.. and where the hell was the sense in that?...😊👍
Mr Martin Short you are an amazing man and you are a gift to this world of ours I’m so happy to see you and laugh with you…. Your respect for your wife is unbelievable I applaud you …. you are loved the whole world over because of who you are….You make Canada proud
What is it that makes Martin Short so endearing? Sincerity, plain and simple. For someone who has so many comedy façades, he is engagingly sincere and down to earth. He's a great interview because of his sincerity.
Canadians are so GD funny..........Martin Short, John Candy, Catherine O'Hara, Eugene Levy, Rick Moranis, Dan Aykroyd, Dave Thomas, Jim Carey, Mike Myers, Dave Foley, Kevin McDonald, Scott Thompson, Bruce McCulloch, Mark McKinney, Leslie Neilson, Phil Hartman, Norm McDonald, Seth Rogan, Tommy Chong, Will Arnett, Russel Peters, Michael Cera, Samantha Bee............jesus what a list of insanely funny people.
Ryan Gosling and Ryan Reynolds...new generation. I can't explain it other than we are Canadian.....Hmmm...in the world Canada is a joke. I say Thank you...lol
Good lord I love Marty. His appearances on Letterman were always epic. How about a pause as Americans and thank God we have such normal, wonderful people on our norther border.
@@mikewhite4560 My wife did the same thing while we were in the process of divorce. Took all pictures out of family albums...off the walls or anywhere to be seen. Wanted to actually remove my image from herself and our three kids.
Going to see Steve/Martin/Short next summer so I've been watching some Marty clips. I was always a Steve Martin guy, but had under-appreciated how freakin' funny Marty is, and, he is so right about when you lose someone, people think you don't want to talk about them.
Man, can I relate to his story about how he felt before he actually knew his brother had died . . . only my story is less tragic. I was on my motorcycle, driving into San Felipe, Baja California for the first time, MANY years ago. I got to the traffic circle in the middle of town which has a giant sculpture of twin arches . . . and I was flooded with this feeling that I'm home. I mean, it was powerful. I shed a few tears. I stopped to regain my composure. I am not religious, and I have NO idea what that was all about. Never happened before that, never happened again . . . except that every time I returned to San Felipe, I had the same feeling, only not quite so overwhelming. Like Bil says "We don't have all the answers."
I liked the part when he talked about not wanting to forget his wife. I remember an article on Jim Murray, the celebrated LA sports columnist. After the death of his wife, he was living in the same house he had for most of his married life, and someone suggested he sell, it would help him forget, and he asked, "Why would I want to forget?" I realize that when people say that about forgetting, they really mean to not dwell on the loss and move on with life, I sometimes wish that is what we would say, but the whole forgetting thing is too ingrained in speech now.
I think a lot of it depends on how the person died as far as staying in the house that you shared... My best friend died a very sad death, as a lifelong alcoholic... And his wife couldn't wait to get out of the house as fast as possible because it contains mostly bad and sad memories of those last 10 or 15 years... I could hardly blame her, although I do blame her for becoming an alcoholic herself and dying pretty much the exact same way less than 3 years later...😔
When he’s trying to be funny, he’s hilarious and a great interview. When he’s trying to talk more seriously, he’s a great interview. The man’s a treasure.
With Robin Williams' passing, Martin Short might be the most likeable comedian out there today. Not necessarily the funniest but someone who can be funny while still coming across with a lot of warmth and humanity.
It's refreshing to see someone admit that we don't have all the answers. A little surprising that that person is Bill Maher. Just goes to show that being atheist doesn't mean you have to deny all spiritual experience.
I just wanted to say that I love that Bill said that, even though he isn't religious, he doesn't have all the answers in reference to Martin having a "feeling" when his brother died. I've had that same situation happen to me! Anyway.....Love this interview. Thank you, Bill. Hey, bring Jiminy back, Martin. I miss that crazy guy
Martin Short is the most under rated actors out there. Wonderful person who can scare the heck out of you if that's the role he's playing. Love him! But don't want to be in the same room with him.
martin short's energy is amazing. i'm another person raised catholic turned atheist, going on 30 years now, realized when i was 16 that my church leaders were full of shit, and the belief was archaic and ridiculous. ------- and not long after i was walking somewhere and saw a book on the side of the road, in excellent condition, i wish i could remember the name of it, but it covered a number of subjects and i vividly remember reading a passage by a scientist who flatly stated "there is no god". and explained why. it was the first time i had ever heard such a thing... divine intervention? or a religious person throwing the book out a window?
I was in LA and I got the feeling to call homw to the UK I only called one person in 5 weeks that was mt grandma ,my grandad had died a few hours before
I don't think Maher could handle it. lol Jiminy Glick would have made mincemeat of Maher in no time flat. Martin Short is such a classy guy (and easily outshines Maher with no effort) and a great singer and entertainer.
Canadians are naturally funny for a very misunderstood reason. People say Canadians are nice, polite people. NOT TRUE. We just speak with a level of sarcasm which is so engrained in our fabric that we just don't get offended by much. In fact, the harder you can stick it to someone with your sarcasm, the more liked you'll be. My teachers and mentors growing up, to this day even, will not tell you that you're wrong. Instead, they'll use sarcasm to guilt you into realizing that you could have been correct if you put in the effort.. Very different culture from the hard-nosed approach down south.

Martin Short is maybe the funniest person on the planet. Am a fan of Bill Maher too but I find it odd since they are discussing both being taken for Jewish when they aren't. Except that Bill Maher is half Jewish (his mother I believe) but he refuses to go there, at least in this video. Unsettling.
I am not a Bill Maher fan. Let's just put it out there; Marty is explaining how his Dad relates to his family during the evening meal, and Maher STILL CAN'T COMPREHEND IT, insisting that his Dad is just plain odd. I can't even get through this clip because Maher drives me insane. His inability to understand what his guests are saying is just wrong. How did this guy make it in show biz?
