ABUSING a cheap Xplod subwoofer - 2000Wrms LIKE A BOSS!!

So i was messing around as a true basshead does with some big power, a cheap old Sony Xplod 12" subwoofer, and a cheap prefab box with a port whacked in it - and i honestly couldn't believe the amount of bass this thing puts out and how well it takes SIX TIMES its rated power!!
Crown Macro Tech 2400 - 2040Wrms @ 4ohms
Sony Xplod 12" 300Wrms 4ohms
Box tuned to about 32hz... lol
Big thumbs up for budget subs taking huge power like a champ!!
I have to revist this video every year. Always puts a massive smile on my face!😊
I'm back 😄
After this video, we must all bow in the presence of a Sony Xplod....
Then bow every time you enter my room
You shall bow your head in the presence of my passenger seat
@@marwintalens7066 🤣🤣🤣
That shows that power is not what kills a sub, Clipping/Distortion is what kills subs. Big power + responsible gain setting = win!
Oohh so i guess that means i can put 2,000 watts into my kicker cvr 15 as long as theres no clipping or distortion. Thanks fam. 🙌👍
+Jose Acosta thats true
Bullshit have you ever been to a competition. Clean power can kill a sub. If the sub is pushed to hard it can break mechanically or melt the voice coils. We used to hook cheap subs up to my amp turned down 90% and just kill them. They would basically lock up like a car throwing a rod and seize up.
+Tammy Forbes melted a 12 due to a non ported box over heating it xD
+Brandon Green don't get me wrong clean power is good for a sub but there is a limit. Like the subs we blew where cheap 250watt subs and we ran them on sundown 5000 with the gain turned down to about 10% and it would make the sub slap the bottom like crazy. They would rip surrounds, tear spiders, and melt coils after a few burps. But as long as your within reason about it you can run them over rms just as long as you don't over drive them past there mechanical limit.
RIP Headphones, you served me well
no shit
try home theater speakers. rip
istg that shit came out of no where!! lol
no joke blew an airpod watching this lmao
Squaller bruh
I've got 2 12'Xplod Blacks (380RMS, 1300W MAX) I use one, the other is still taped up in the original Circuit City Box. I am running a bridged Pioneer 760W amp into it, so it's taking all 760W. Gain is set responsively and the thing is in a cheap ass $30 walmart box. Ive cranked it to the max levels I can without throwing the amp into protect from undervolting, and the thing doesnt have any problems whatsoever. Barely gets warm. Even threw the thing in my Uncles Duramax one day just for fun on a 1500W Rockford Power series mono, and it took every bit with no distortion. Got a little heated, but incredible for what it is.
That thing moves ridiculously when you feed it right... Was not expecting this at all, almost feels like a shame that xplods still have this stigma about them
DJ HighPah i have always bagged them all my life and seeing this video makes me think that they have almost got me to not bagging them anymore.
Yeah I know man 😢 didn't expect this from Sony!! What!?!?
I think so many people underestimated this subwoofer back in the day! Its a beast ! ahah
I remember being at a Frys Electronics in California like 20 years ago.. They had a huge Xplod display which basically was a GIANT X that had 2 subwoofers in the bottom and some 6X9 coaxials in the top, Sony HU in the middle with 2 Xplod Amps powering everything... You could demo it in person, I was astonished at how damn good it sounded.. Especially the Bass.. No one I knew ever really rocked the Sony stuff for car audio.. unless it was the Sony ES line which was very expensive.
man i would love to live next door to you
those old school crown amps are so much nicer than the new ones
FACTS!!!! #Vintage!!!!
nah..
@@Newschoolcovers no
i could imagine what sonys reaction would be if they watched this lmao. amazing video!
Just goes to show that its ALL ABOUT clean, consistent power from your amp!
Its about the box
Ah yes, of equal importance for sure!
@@edgymeme6351 It's about both.
Definitely 😊😅
Idk why, but just watching the subwoofer move and listening to it puts a smile on my face :) I'm definitely going to buy two of these and see what I can do with them.
The best setup I had was 2 12 inch sony Xplods, hooked to an MTX 81000D amp.. It was AMAZING.
The only issue was every other week, one of the tinsel leads would break.. both subs, just one at a time. I'd solder them, and keep it moving. Sadly, someone broke into my car and stole everything.
For a guy who actually has 2 of these subs, seeing this at 2000.watts rms is super impressive!! And I want to put more power to them!
Me too bro I've got 2 of them slamming with a cheap jensen 1200 mono amplifier hooked up parallel @1ohm and they are fucking restarted loud rip to my Silverado roof and back window.
@@tobydozier9030 hell yeah man! 1 ohm parallel?! thats nuts! my amps just a 1000 watt sony xplod. and i got it cranked all the way up now after watching this video months ago and what do you know they still slammin hard! no issues!
@@spencer15898 I was lying to you brother they are at a 3ohm impedence I checked em yesterday.
@@tobydozier9030 ahh okay still though shit still be bumping hard as fuck!
@@spencer15898 fuckin rite.
someone gave me a 15” 500rms xplode years and years ago to blow it. well its still running and ive thrashed it on as much as 3k! if it wont blow on clean power it can live😁
Its amazing what CLEAN power can do for a subwoofer!!! Sony also isnt THAT bad, they make decent stuff for the price point. :)
Dude this is awesome i respect xplods
Sony power
That x-plode looks confused. Lol. When it left the factory, it never dreamed of having clean power, all his buddy's kinda knew where they were headed, like my first system, 3 xplods on a plye 4 channel, wired the best way I knew how. Never blew the amp or the subs though, no matter what I did to either. Knowing what I know now, I'm actually impressed with the xplods and the fact they actually got loud and worked when I had no knowledge of wiring or impedance. Ignorance is bliss, now I'm having to beef up my electrical to run @ half ohm worth a Crescendo 4500 and my 2017 Fi btl's. I'm gonna post an unboxing for them this weekend. First to do it... Except for a 15 and no talking about it. Look it up later this week, I'll name it something like 2017 Fi audio btl Neo 18. If you want to see a beautiful sub anyways.
In my experience if your using a amp that's rated a lot more watts than the sub, the sub can take a right old pounding before it starts to die if your trying to kill it. With a under powered sub it tends to burn up from the bad signal getting put through it. Clipping I think it's called.
These Sonys are so good for real I had 4 in my Jeep crazy loud these are no joke for budget subs
Does anyone else remember when Sony XPlod subs got a ton of hate?
BackDraft_147_1333 cause they shit and need loads of power to sound decent
Only because it was sold at Walmart.
but there still are xplods in use :) i know they re shit but they are best cheap subs if asking me
The subs got hate because of the amp bundles. The subs were really durable, but didn't sound good. The amps were complete garbage.
@@cxjoker9515 ikr my MTX 12s hit 2 times as hard on 250 and that is underpowering them.....
probably one of the reasons why it didn't blow is you are feeding it a clean non distorted signal into the sub woofer and you have good power unlike a car amp where if it hits a low the amp clips because it cant get the power it needs and then it sends a square wave but it is impressive
sony makes some pretty good shit. xplod, yea sure its not no DC or FI but sony stoll deserves respect in the lower end mass market:)
Your feeding it clean power that's probably why it survived!
I run a 500w RMS 15 on 1000w constantly. It's fine, in fact it seems to be a very efficient setup. The only issue is the car does smell like coil, and it does get warm after 30 mins at full volume.
JEEEEESUSSS!!!!! great commercial for SONY™ tho lol you HAMMERED it with a damn CROWN AMP??? OH MY GOD!!!! we used those to rick CLUB back in the day!!!
I have 2 of these. and good lord they do hit I only have a old school 600 watt Rockford amp hooked up
whos accuatly watching in 2016 :) it just turned new years here
I came back to this video cause idk, love barevids
that2strokerider I'm watching in 2017 :P
yup
hi from 2017
hello from July 27th 2017 heh.
I still have one of these in 2021. It outlasted 2 planet audio subs and a kenwood. It doesnt die. I run it on a 2500 jbl mosfet.
I got one at a garage sale for 10 damn follars and gave it to my buddy to match his other 3 and gaaaaaaaa daaaaaaaamnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn the shit hurt my brains
I had 2 Sony explodes on roughly 2000 watts. It hit really hard & sounded pretty good.
Had one that took some old school Orion 1000 watt amp took it all
my daughter has two of them in her trunk and she's using my 600 watt amp and they take every bit of it and don't sound too bad for such a cheap sub
Enjoyed the vid. I have two 15's of those xplods and still love them today. And so do my neighbours lol
Still have one right now and it hits hard 💯👌
The sub must be defective. that's why it's lasting so long. Lol:-) cool vid
The reason it's last so long is because I think this particular line has 2 inch 4 layer coil.
can you make a video about: how to make / design a subwoofer box
one thing i noticed about sony subs is you can abuse the kuk out of them and they actually produce super bass. had the same subs when i was young
"lets turn it down to low volume" 2 seconds later. BASSSSS!!!!
Sony Xplod, the best subs in the world.
***** Maybe not the very best, but among the best. MTX are the no.1.
***** No
***** I assume you mean the opposite.
***** No, MTX are.
***** I think it is wrong to say that they are the best, only because they are used by one specific guy.
Best cheap from sony sub very solid and give pretty decent bass for it price
this type of Sony sub I like specifically the 1200 Watts its great
I liked the Pioneer ones at Walmart more, same price too
Sony is such a good brand man my whole hifi in my room is Sony
all that bass and air leaks impressive
I ran a Kicker CVR15 (500 rms) on a little over 1400 watts in a sealed box. I think it was 1423 watts if I remember correctly. I beat the piss out of that subwoofer and over the year I had it, it never failed on me. Of course I wired it up correctly. My buddy had two Kicker CVX12's on a Kicker 1500.1 which theoretically should be just the right amount of power for a 750 rms speaker. He let someone wire the speakers to the amp who had no knowledge about wiring and they failed in less than a month. Just shows how important the right wiring job can do.
I had a pair of sony black 1300 watts 12" and they was amazing
I have the dual red ones setup in my closet now
Sending clean power thru a sub isn't gonna blow it a bad clip or distortion will pop the coil over the housing on the motor
This statement couldn't be more wrong. Stop advising people this.
Remember those Sony Xplod boomboxes? They were pretty decent.
I need a big crown amp in my house . I could have so much fun
thats a weapon ! what do your neighbours say ?
Xplods are pretty tough speakers though
If I was to run one of these with a 600 watt Walmart sub (it’s rated for 1200 but I doubt that) would it sound decent on a 240x2 amp
Those red pentagonal explods were pretty damn impressive, even at full retail. I snagged up a 10" that was on clearance at a local auto parts store, and if it weren't so physically ugly, I'd still be running it in my car. I'm not one to give a toss about street cred or any crap like that; it just clashed horribly with the interior of my car, and I couldn't be assed to paint it. XD
What's the song at 3:53?
"shit STILL aint warm...cold as hell....let's keep it goin'"...
First xplods are bad accordng to many people but then they appear to be good
very confusing to those which have not heard one in real life lol. videos like this should clear up any rumours though. theres no doubt they hit to an extent
he did something to that subwoofer
no, even i never blew my xplod (XS-GTR121L), while it definitely was on a way too powerful amp receiving anywhere between 80-98.5v most of the time, on 4 ohms that is approx 2400w, not taking into account possible box rise
Sony subs sounds good to me. I had two black 1300 12s and I had them on a epicenter. Its was my loudest system ever with no lights dimming. Very efficient. Now I have a dd audio 715 and its stupid loud
I had two 10s in a sealed box back in the day and it sounded great in a Nissan Sentra. A "friend" stole them. Now I got a 12 the grey one in a mtx box and it sounds great. I knew a guy with a Malibu wagon that had 2 12s and proper power and it was loud as hell. All about the box and power. I've heard every kind of sub. Compared to some hifonics brutus 12s I have these move easier but they forsure have a different sound to them. It's like easy bass if you will. It's strange. My hifonics handle more power but these sound better maybe because they move alot easier and the cone shape. It was supposed to be revolutionary the Pentagon shape and technicality more cone surface area. Almost 12 and a half inch to 13 inch sub. That's why I feel my 10s I used to have sounded like 12s. At least that's how it is with square subs having more surface cone area. I just bought a kicker solo baric 12 so I'm making a box for that. I have had every sub but this is just a couple stories lol. I even got a old planet audio fu laying around. Looks like a cerwin vega stoker. Very loud at high hz. Hard to find a video on them and they don't have any in stock. I'd like to find one or two more. Anyway lol have a nice day.
I always carry a spare 12 in my spare tire area just incase I get too cocky
I'm surprised it didn't strike a coil. Seems to take a lot more than my Eminence 12" 3012LF bass drivers I wouldn't dare subject to that much.
6:13 Sounds like someone needs to lay off the Taco Bell!!
10 quid off Ebay, I should have got 35 Xplod instead of 2 kappalite drivers for my PA subwoofer system!
Seriously though, anyone else think if you have a big wall of boxes it's super cheap displacement? Compared to an expensive driver, you can just drive these Xplod a bit more lightly with so many of them in large ported or 6th order enclosures. Also I usually listen to trance, house and symphonic metal, so less extended bass tones than heavy rap and dubstep. I can feed more peak power before coil overheat.
I still have 2 JBL GTO1264 woofers I got for £30 each but haven't made a box for. I'm thinking a big 6th order in the low 30s for mini home dance club use.
hence why i love my xplods.
The beginning of this video reminds me of that "BAREVIDS" video you posted AGES ago
+RWL2012 oh yesss!!! Hahaa
I have a pair of these except 10's on a memphis mc1000d. 1100rms @1 ohm. use them as my winter system and beat the hell out of them and there still going strong haha
yah your right i was thinking of my other subs
I have a couple of DEI Studio 12" subs in a 6th order box on a fosgate amp. They have been taking a serious pounding. And still going.
This is called tempering speaker :D Nice.
Pele19x89 good point I find speakers last longer when you play till you smell coil then let it sit for a few, then play it again. It is like you said tempering.
i have had a pair of these in a prefab box since maybe around 2005 or so. mine cones have never moved as much as yours here and i was using a boss amp claiming to be around 4k, based on what i have seen i'd say my 4k was probably actually 1k, but the subs still work, anyways tonight i was reading how they are rated to 30hz. maybe that is why it sucks below that range? i have always prefered the lower bass, but its like no air sound at below 30, you just kinda hear them clicking ever cycle
Crazyy!! This is gonna make me buy one 😂👍👏
Yeah, thats for a long time a go.. but not any more.. cause my sony xs1800 watt max coil heating with only 250watt rms amp.. then i buy another jvc sub that last until now..
That thing is pounding! Subscribed too
"jesus fucking christ" lmao never gets old.
that sub about to fly out The boxxxxx lmao that shit hit i had one of those before
This is pretty awesome. I fed my cheap ass Sony around 400w RMS for ages (200 rated) and it never skipped a beat. What is the model number of that particular Sony?
I like the xplod amps as well. I have one just says 1000w on it. 2 channel and in bangs the shit out of my 2 alpine type s in a big box.
Yeah that'd be the one. I got I bridged and it makes that wattage at 4 ohms!
Hahaha Sony. I ran 2 XSGS120LD 12's trunk class. there biggest issue was not power but suspension. I never got them metered but based on how loud they were compared to my current system that I got metered I'd say they did 138dB @ 34 hz @425watts clamped per sub. box was 4cuft on the dot when u calculated the displacement of the subs them selfs (external areo) and tuned at 28Hz. they would bottom out insane. and one spider came loose from the coil. never did damage to them thermally but couldn't take them really high due to excessively large box and excessively low tuning. my current set up does 143db @34hz @505 watts per sub with trunk open, driver door open and globe In the passenger kick panel with the same exsact box.
I have a few questions relating to the sub in this video. What is the sub specifically (like, serial number. I wanna look it up)? What is the RMS and max rating of that sub? Did you ever find out what the true RMS of this sub was, and what was it? Did the coil heat up, smell, or look burnt after this test or any test afterward?
I'm trying to get some sub's that can handle 1200-1400W RMS at 1ohm, and would like to know if these could do the job.
wat that slow down app
A great SPL sub for peasant bassheads.
How does the mic keep clipping so much from a single sub?
Holy f it’s 8yrs already 🥲🥲🥲🥲
Just adding my input to the "best sub debate" down below...the discontinued Crystal Mobile Sound CMPX212 was the greatest subwoofer ever created in regards to output AND accuracy. Many subwoofers can do output or accuracy but only the best of the best manage to do both well.
Damn I want that speaker. I got a 1200 watt 10 inch sub Sony explode blew up with 600 watts .
You under powered it and it distorted
OK well now I have a question I was listening to this in the car and now I have nothing but static in my speakers and it sounds like shit on everything why and how did this video break my system ?
You are limited on the current handling of the wire used in the voice coils ultimately, at higher voltage it will be acting like a heater element at which point the resins and glues used to hold the coil, cone, spider and former together will likely be initial the cause of failure, followed by coil rub and seizure.
I'm watching this with ear buds and a bass booster app...
Same, Skullcandy buds with ViperFX
I just blew the left earbud lol
+Golden_Wrench RIP
Lol I want to get new ones... they lasted 4 years!
+Golden_Wrench you can never go wrong with new headphones
You know those red Sony xplodes take a proper pounding. I had blown subs that cost 10times more. I keep them as my back up speakers. Mine are 10 years old and still going
Same here
Dame homeboy where can I get a home system like that!!!!?😱😱😱
That sub is know for taking a beating
I felt the bass threw my phone
speaker LITERALLY screaming for it's life at 00:10:00 lol hellllllp!!
man what a beast!!!!😱
i have a old mtx thunder 4000 15inch and i want to use is for home theatre i want to get something like 23 hz of lower if posseble
This is why I fucking love Sony
That speaker loves the port
xplod"s hit hard you just have to know how to hook it up right
13Bbeetle that part 👏👏💯💯💯
How's the best way to hook up ??
Still waiting for part 2! :D I have the black "1300w" xplod over here.
are you using a plastic cup as a port XD
Damn that thing can take a beating
2019 just thought I'd check it out again might look around for one
