There is capitalism in Cuba. Communism is so shit, that it needs some capitalism otherwise it will collapse. The closest country to communism in today's world would be North Korea. And even they are trying to use a bit of capitalism "capital" because communism is so ineffective.

The US was only successful through luck, and WW2, before that it was a bit of a backwater.
Cuba was never allowed to be successful, because of the jealousy of the US threatened any country that dares to trade with it. Cuba has been very successful in medicine, with a universal healthcare system in many ways far superior to the US( US has medical cartels which are illegal).
Every country that tried for a mixed economy has been attacked and ultimately destroyed by subversive US interference, because US foreign policy is toxic and only now have they come unstuck against a superior country in the Ukraine.
