This video is about how I price my prints. It's a topic a lot of photographers, myself included, struggle with.
As I explain in this video I think the best place to start is to find a good printer, learn about fine art papers and other materials as well as the logistics, and get an understanding of the costs. From there, it's much easier to work out a fair price for your work.
Any questions let me know!
Cheers,
James

My Dad was an art dealer (giving me a taste for all the stuff I cannot afford, Picasso, Leger and so on). I once asked him how he knew what a painting or sculpture was worth. His answer to me (somewhat tongue in cheek) was, "It's worth what people will pay for it". Sage words. I also learned from him (and later for my brief photography career) that people new to selling their work tend to under=price it, and that buyers are often suspicious of grossly under-priced work.
Very good point, I agree with that, That's also why need to stay away from discounting art - it's luxury on not goods or services, so we have to treat it like that and people get suspicious if we discount "is it then worth even the discounted price?"
Thank you for sharing. I find it easier to start high and work down than start low and work up.
Don't let the background noise stop you from uploading more frequently! :)
+24Horses Thanks! I'll try not to, hopefully they'll be gone soon 🙂
They're a good excuse though. Just in case you need one. :-)
Thank you James for the great content. Not only are you entertaining but your art is really amazing. I just ordered a limited edition of High Life, it'll be my first piece and I'm really excited, so again I thank you sir.
Thanks so much, looking forward to getting it out to you :)
I printed some photos for the first time and my grandma was the first to offer to buy them.
Shit, now I'm gonna spend a bunch of time worrying about what my price is cause I don't want to rip off my own grandmother
jonah hoff then barter with her

An apple pie for some photos seems fair to me....lol too funny
hahahaha this made me laugh so much man - cheers!
I usually charge grannies the typical quarter
Thank you sooo much James ! This was really helpful. I'm just starting out 😊 !
Very reasonable pricing. Many photographers complain their work isn't selling. It's because they're pricing their work too high. Your pricing of 2x to 5x cost is extremely rational. Thanks for the great video. Be well, sir.
One of the strategies I've seen from some people selling online is to set a hard deadline for a sale or limited edition print and stick to it. It can tend to drive that purchase because exclusivity and limited time frame.
Also, just had a thought; maybe consider taking some of your best selling works and find someone in the graphic design field to collab with to create illustrative, more iconic (as in iconography, not widely recognized) version that would translate well to t-shirts, mugs, and stuff?
+MyMidlifeCrisis That's a cracking idea, thanks mate! 👍🏼
That'll be 10% of all sales for the "creative" fee. :P
+MyMidlifeCrisis Deal! ☺👍🏼
lol +MyMidlifeCrisis :P My partner does the same. For every good idea he has for my art or business, he says ..."and I will earn 20% of your income and you will buy me a Tesla" looool
Thank you. I have way have watching your videos for a few years now. Love your videos.
Like videos like this which help people who genuinely wouldn't know where to start .. (Aka me...) .. Good stuff
+Mr B thanks mate, good to hear it's potentially helpful 👌🏼
Nice man thanks for the insight, I'm still trying to wrap my head around of how I should go about the whole Print process. This helps!
+meletispix Great to hear mate! Best of luck 👍🏼
Great cameo performance from the stripy green socks!
Also if you're not sure, 'AP' stands for Artist Proof :)
Those socks are awesome. Hopefully those builders will be finished before 2020
+Arcana73 😂 I've got my fingers crossed!
I don’t mean to sound stupid, but what does Artists Proof mean?
James, like ur vlogs, every single day coming to youtube to check, did you post something or not, keep doing what you do buddy!
Thanks mate :)
Thank you James. Very useful indeed.
Note to self, Welcome to your new pricing strategy😀
Thanks James, Really enjoyed this vlog - and timely. Perhaps a follow up or 2 about shipping/drop-shipping and how to go about setting up an e-commerce store on a website?
Good idea, I'll have a think about that Mark, cheers!
God just printing stuff for my A-level portfolio almost drove me insane. Totally love the idea of physical prints, but so glad everything can be done digitally now
+SevenW25 V Too true, precision really isn't my thing ☺
love your videos, they have always a certain character, your sarcastic dry humor is great! ;D
+Felix Siewert Cheers Felix 👍🏼
Did you decide whether it’s weird having one of your own prints in the lounge? I tried it but took it down pretty quickly. I could only see what I didn’t like about it. But it’s not on the same level as yours obvs...
+Ian Robertson Yeah it's definitely weird Ian! I think it's fine for this place but I'll find a new home for it when we move again, the garage maybe 😂
I hang my photos in my home when preparing for a show...because I have no where else to put them.
Nice one James. 👍🏼
Part 2 about Frames and Mounts maybe?
+charliefarley74 Good shout Charlie! 👍🏼
Is this still how you do it? Be interesting to see an update to this James
nicely done mate! Insightfull, good starting point!
Cheers Tiago!
I had my photo album with me one day and my friend wife happen to look at it and she wanted a large 24 X 36 print on canvas I was surprised. I'm glad someone had this huge printer. I send my photos to a studio for large prints. I'll keep taking photos and l let someone print my photos. Those printer are very expensive.
Thanks for the info. Shouldnt you WATERMARK your work, before posting online ?
Never change, James 😂 Loved this video.
Short and informative. Great stuff!
+Mathias Eklöf Thanks Mathias!
Hi James, that's very useful information to me, thanks mate. I've been trying to find out those figures online and this is the first time it's clear in my head about pricing stuff. Also a very informative video about print sizes you did too. A few things I'd like to ask is, do you insure your prints when you ship them? Do you send them in poster tubes or ready framed? Is it worth selling images on canvas and other mediums? Also I live in the Channel Islands and shipping from here is dearer then in the UK and printing here is probably dearer then in the UK. Should I use a printer in the UK or do you recommend me always sticking with a printer where I live?
Curious as hell... I was thinking of selling prints and your video popped up. Thank you for the info.
+MuertoInc Awesome! Glad to help and good luck with the sales 👍🏼
First of all love ur videos... and all of ur work in generally .Second, the print is crooked ! OCD HERE ! Thanks for making those videos man ..u cheer my up every time i watch those. Love this british humour u guys have !
Many greetings from Greece ..keep on man !
Very nice b-roll :-)
And I think your pricing is more than fair.
+Trembich Moving Moments Good to hear, thank you! 👍🏼
Great video as usual. Oh yeah... I know that feeling about background noises when trying to record audio. I've literally gone to a local park before to record voiceover in my car, haha. **** TRAINS (among other noises)
+Photography Banzai That's a great idea 👍🏼☺
I used to use Photobox to print, then ship to me and i'd sell locally (I didn't sell too many as it was motorsports and mostly to the racers themselves and they notoriously dont have much money), so it was cost effective that way for me. However, I never knew how to price for anything else I did, or if they went off Island where shipping was an issue, so this helps if i ever take another photo with a digital camera.
That was a long winded way of saying cheers for the info, James. (No thumbs down so far, so I'll get back to you on that one)
+Dave Arkanoid Gilbert 😂 Cheers Dave!
Right, 2 thumbs down now. That'll be me. Both hands (even though i gave it a thumbs up too. I borrowed a thumb from Jason Lanier). And that's for a distinct lack of One Minute Wednesdays lately. Sort it out or I'll go and watch the Angry Photographer instead. I mean it, I'll do it, just you watch. Not bluffing.
(Totally bluffing
As someone else said, one of the kind topic. Enjoyed it very much. Meanwhile, I'm printing mine from Canon Selphy
+Hideki Gomi Niiiiice! Thank you 🙂
Selphy was my sarcasm, poor man's printer!
thomas heaton did the same thing a year or two ago... worth a look
Steven Powell I see! But I’m biased, james’ fan here
u can follow more than one person though lol.... expand your horizons mate :)
Great work man
Question: You are using at least 3 different formats (5:4, 3:2, 4:3) of the same image, meaning each print format is going to be slightly different in regards to what is on the print. Why not settle on a max of 2 formats (the 3:2 for example can go from 4x6 up to 40x60 and it's the same exact image)
Hey Tim! I wanted to hit the most popular frame sizes :)
Thanks, started a website earlier this year and think I will go to your suggestions. Gracias
You need to syndicate those for the global poster market. And have a posh bird who can pronounce a number you'd never dare to in a cut glass accent with a straight face, as your agent. Second point, do you think the image will hold up at the largest sizes if you go MFT?
+Borderlands 😂 Niiice! As for the second question, not at all. 16mp is fine for 50 inch prints when you're looking at them from the correct viewing distance. Every street corner has a billboard that says 'shot on iphone' now ☺
This was very helpful. I'm selling pod giclee prints and it was hard to justify the higher pricing of say... an original painting. Mine are reproduction prints of original paintings so it got confusing.
Helpful video thanks James
I found it was way cheaper for me to do my own prints with the Epson P800. Getting a service would cost about $75 Canadian for a 16X20 on fine art paper. I can do that on my own printer for about $7-$10. One does not need to but a $13 000+ printer . I guess if your prints are 24 inches wide then using a service makes sense. The Epson p800 was $800 and something Canadian after rebate. They new sell the P900.
Very interesting and helpful. Thank you for the info 👍
I bought a printer just like that brand new for $3200 in the USA. Still have it 7 years later and it has paid for itself multiple times.
I don’t know if you still reply to these older videos, but my question is. Is this type of pricing still good for just selling photos digitally? And is selling photos digitally any good? I guess that’s 2 questions 🤣🤣.
How do you figure out your costs? Particularly if it is a landscape or something like that? I took a trip (my own idea - not hired or anything) and came up with a great photo that a few people want to buy.....if I charged what the trip cost, the price would be unreasonable!
+Michael Romagnoli Good point Michael, production (paper, ink) are the only costs I consider for this reason 👍🏼
James good stuff man!! I love your channel and your a damn comedian!! HAHA
With your open editions do you include a certificat of authenticity or are those open only to the more exclusive ones? :)
Nice, very useful indeed.
Thank you very much
yeah, on that get rid of the sofa to make room for the $15k printer... not a real well-thought strategy; when Emily discovered it, where you would sleep then...? ( it's easier to hide lenses and bodies anyway...) Good vid !
I didn't mean like human bodies btw. Camera bodies, just to be clear.
😊
+Lyle Stavast haha, so true!
+Lyle Stavast 😂😂
I’ve just started selling my prints.
Shall I bother signing the?
Hi James, Thanks for the video very informative. Who designed your website?
Jason, why did you moved to that noisy area, and how long are they still planning to go on?
Not that I mind (it makes your videos a bit more funny).
Are you going to do a 'ask me anything' video one's? I sunseraly would like that, and perhaps your other viewers also 😁
Will do soon mate, maybe next month! Also, the builders will hopefully be gone in a few weeks :)
The new Epson one is significantly cheaper, like 5 grant at the same quality, or better quality. Fine art printers kept getting better. I saw in an expo in Beijing (my hometown) and made a video about it :)
are you still printing with Klein? happy? any issues? for online sales, do you charge a flat rate for international shipping? how is shipping for your international orders calculated?
James - the size of the actual image you've taken makes a difference in printing, right? Could you elaborate on that? For instance, you mentioned offering a huge print (48' wide)....what was the size of the actual photo you took with your camera? For you other size prints, what were the sizes of the actual photos you took with your camera? What are best practices for the size you shoot in relation to printing them in various sizes?
Are you using Squarespace for your site? Looks good! I like the ability to show the different sizes over the sofa, etc.
Sounds like a legit way to price prints. 👍🏼👍
The calendar is not going to come back before Christmas right!
Thanks for the info, James! I don’t see open edition prints on your website. Do you not sell those now? I am a photographer and trying to figure out how I want to proceed with selling prints.
very helpful dude 😊 thanks
I have seen 2 year old epson poster size printers on ebay for £50 spares and repairs which can be fixed
problem is getting people to ship them because they are so large and heavy.
That is really helpfull. Thank you!
+Janusz Gajusz Great, thanks for letting me know 🙂
Helpful info thanks!
Brilliant ,but I have a dilemma, when you use the rough arty paper (I use the Innova smooth cotton 315gm ) I’ve noticed you place plastic in front of it ,I know in this case it’s for your own house and it maybe in this case a lustre finish . But to those who buy it do they mount it without placing the print behind glass/acrylic if so won’t you lose some of the texture ! I’ve been experimenting with photo panels where the print in all its texture is placed on a self adhesive backing .So the texture and detail is seen in all its glory ,however it’s a bit exposed to the elements and has to be handled with care ,a trade off I suppose . Any ideas?
Thanks ,Dave
Great video once again. I have been thinking a lot lately of buying a printer to make my own prints. Definitely not a $15,000 printer. I've been doing a lot of reading and watching youtube videos on the Canon 1000 pro. It prints up to 17" x 22". Not sure yet though because I've also been eyeing a new drone...lol
Your exasperated look at about the 2:05 mark is fabulous.
Just btw, I'm pretty sure you can find an excellent printer for a lot less than fifteen grand if you are willing to settle for 13 x 19 or 11 x 17 inch maximum dimensions. Obviously that doesn't work for larger prints, but given an envelope and a pen you could probably work out how many small prints you would need to sell to make that route worth your while.
One objection to using different printers is that there very likely would be a noticeable difference--not saying better or worse--in the colors, even if you are using the same brand of printer (different model of course) as your service. That might be a reason to ignore the economics of a good home printer anyway... Is that a factor?
+Geoffrey Barss It's certainly something I'm continually considering Geoffrey! We'll see what the future holds 🙂
In an economic perspective it's a too big investment for a photographer to write off and from an artistic point of view it does not make any difference....
@1:40 So familiar what you tell about hanging your own work on your own wall...
Hi James, what do you mean by AP? Does it stands for archival paper. Not sure... Can you explain please? Thanks ;)
I have found the answer on Artsy. Now for the benefit of all the newbees like me, here is the answer:
***An A.P. is a copy of the photograph outside of the edition size, often made as a test and reserved for the artist's own collection or to be shown in gallery and museum shows. A photograph can have multiple A.P.s, and some of them may be available for purchase if the rest of the edition is sold out; this is determined on a work-by-work basis.***
Thank you for this video!
Thanks for watching :)
How do you deal with that nasty reflection due to the plexi glass. Thats my biggest problem now.
Hey Tim, I've got zero plan to combat that :), I just deal with it. I use a matte paper which helps a little though!
4:05
You only showed the name of the paper you
use for a "SPLIT" second... ??? Why?
but... I love this video and it was great...
Thank you for sharing this...
I print my own unless I needs a print that's too large for my printer. I still make test prints so that I know that the file I send to Whitewall or Millers is as good as it can be before I send it. I can't aford-or justify- $15,000 for a printer: Not enough work to justify or pay for it.
Are there a lot of landscaping photo buyers in uk? I have seen many UA-cam videos from uk talking about selling them
how are you liking the hanuemebshahahba paper 😂. still liking it? I'm about to test it out. I've been loving some Kodak metallic paper lately
do you scan your artwork digitally? or Take professional photos of them before printing ?
Can you do a update video on this?
I considered doing this myself, but thought that it was too simple. How do you pick which prints will be limited?
Just thought I would ask but what frame did you use for the picture in the background?
Have been looking at difference between printing at home and getting it done external like yourself. Would like to print at home but my god it looks expensive for decent quality.
+Renegade Scot Yeah, and complicated ☺👍🏼
I’ve tried and it just doesn’t make sense financially
Hi James, which camera do you use to get a print 40 inches wide?
Starts at 2:20
What kind of size prints are selling better? A4/A3 or bigger?
Are your prints right giclée?
How do I find a high-quality printing service near me (New Jersey, USA)?
Very helpful cheers
Awesome to hear :)
So do you sign every print in the edition, or just the AP?
A very naive question. Is it common to have separate limited editions for each size and if so do the buyers ever get upset to find that the photo they bought, sold in more than 100 copies including other sizes? Thanks
Hello Mike,
Im a bit late, but...
It is common for artists to number limited editions per printsize, so the biggest prints are .../5 while there are many small prints, most people (buying the big prints) know this, and I've seen artists even noting this on their website.
Have a nice day!
Matthijs
Hmm you go multiplier of cost. I've seen some models that use square footage times a multiplier.
Very informative, many thanks. I owe you a beer.
So James ... I watched the whole video and learned so much from it. I have been trying to research more about the printed medium for ground and air based photography. I understood everything you said except the part about you contemplating swapping the sofa for a printer.... what were you thinking 🤔 I’ve been married for 33 years now.... I can help you. That would have been a catastrophic rookie mistake. Reach out to me and I’ll guide you on your next life altering decision.... 😃
There are a few components to how to get paid for photos. One place I found that succeeds in merging these is the Hartlyn photo pro (google it if you're interested) without a doubt the best resource that I've heard of. look at the extraordinary information .
That pricing is crazy cheap. I charge 7x to 20x for just the prints and I feel that is too cheap. If it is matted or framed it is about 5x to 7x
video starts at 2:15
The hard part is figuring out cost.....It is more than just the printing cost....what do you include if figuring out your cost?
helpful
After 2 minutes I was still waiting on how you price your prints but there wasn't anything there.
Love thissssss video lol
2 mins into this video and still no word on why I actually clicked on it 😡
Lol I was looking for a printing lol
Did you sign and number your in house print? Say number one out of 50...
Artist proof 1/2 :)
Better not be wanky to put your own work in your house because my house is covered in my own photos.
haha, at least there are two of us mate - and I don't think it is, I'm 30% sure...
Someone has to look at them. I've sold a few but not many. Just got an order today of 2 A3 ones an A2 one and an A4 one to put up in my house haha. I really like my own photos. And damnit someday someone else will as well. Hopefully. Maybe.
Any video that wastes its first two minutes trying to be funny rather then getting right to the point, is nothing I'm going to devote my time to.
