  • In 2021 many people are getting into the Audio Book Narration Profession. The requirements concerning the ACX, as well as other Audio Book distributors are both extensive as well as easy to accomplish if you can grasp the basic concepts of Audio Requirements.
Hello, my name is Dana and I have been recording the “Spoken Word” for 45 years. I have analyzed close to 10,000 Podcast files using the recommended standards set forth by the Audio Engineering Society, commonly referred to as the AES.
I am also the owner of D & L Studio LLC. Please keep in mind that meeting the requirements concerning the ACX is more complex then Podcasting will ever be! With Podcasting, there are only recommendations. With the ACX, they are requirements. If you do not meet them, you will be rejected! I am an active Narrator with the ACX.
Audio is fun! Mixing and mastering is really quite simple when it comes to the spoken word. STAY OFF EBAY looking for cheap mics. In the last 12 months they have been flooded with counterfeit brand name mics. It has gotten so bad that the real manufactures of these products are now listing this statement on their official sites as well!

11:00 I could be wrong but I think that’s just the -60dB reduction from the gate, not the noise floor. I use a gated sine wave sourced to the kick for the low end, and even though it’s very quiet, if the venue is silent, You can actually hear the sine wave just barely a hum in the subs, because it’s -60, it’s not minus 100 and certainly not -infinity

AFAIK, it really does not matter when it comes to what is allowed through the PA. If the gate is reducing it by 60dBs then it will affect your noise floor.

This was very instructional and gives me a few ideas for other situations, but I have a use case I'm not sure how to handle. In the case of my tribute band (Metallica) there are a lot of situations where I have to play guitar and sing, but the lyric part is where fans LOVE to sing, and we want to hear that. Based on what I saw here, I'm not sure ducking would be the most appropriate, but I'm concerned that gating wouldn't work either as it would pick up the venue's PA's of our sound as well instead of strictly the crowd.
Is this something that you've had to deal with and know how to get a full crowd participation in the ears but block the PA ambient noise or people talking between songs?

I worked through this project with one of our members who have the same situation as you do. They say it works great for them. @PJ Fairley. ua-cam.com/video/7V9QTV3-99o/v-deo.html
