  • This drum was a bear to get right, but I think it turned out pretty sweet in the end.

    If you couldn't see it you'd think it was a metal snare. A steel one. Mad

    you could chuck the cordless drill to the axle when the drum is on the router table. use a squeeze clamp on the trigger to get the speed dialed in. and for the inside route, you could press a solid axle through 2 of the caster wheels and chuck a drill to that axle. a series of gears on the axle could even be arranged to advance the drum/router.

    That was a great video. Beautiful drum. And it's nice to actually hear the drum being tested with some rolls, flams, snare drum rudiments etc, instead of a thunderous back beat buried amongst ringing cymbals and toms.

    I was wondering what kind of protractor you use to get the angles on your table saw, and how many staves you use per drum. Thanks in advance, and keep up the good work.

    • @JosephCenter
      @JosephCenter  6 років тому +1

      For a while now, I've been using a protractor like this: a.co/dBGrQaQ
      However, because my table saw surface isn't reliably flat/true, I've finally picked up one of these, which I can reference directly off the flat sled surface: a.co/3DK7zJo

    "Я не стал делать отверстие для отвода воздуха, т.к. дерево и так в дырках от короеда..." Хорошее решение, только все эти отверстия будут подсвистывать, подбздюхивать - это, конечно, можно назвать фишкой этого барабана. Всё же круто, руки не из жопы растут)))

    What finished outside diameter do you shoot for with your stave shells?
    For those unaware, modern plywood shells are undersized, so a 14" shell is usually between 13 7/8 - 13 15/16 (I've seen even more undersized). Washers or gaskets are then used to space the lugs off of the shell to avoid splay.

    • @JosephCenter
      @JosephCenter  6 років тому

      I shoot for 13 7/8". I've got a couple shells that are right at 12 15/16 or just a hair more, and I don't like how tight the heads are on the shells. The finished diameter on this shell was 13 3/4", hence the spacers.

    Going to be quite frank: your diameter measurements were off because you used a ruler, NOT CALIPERS! Didn't you notice when measuring the inside that the corners of the ruler were In contact with the shell but the center of the ruler was not??? You mesurment was off by the height of the space between the wood and end of the ruler. Perhaps knowing how to make measurements correctly would lead to less mistakes?
    Oh, I am overlooking that this is a You Tube video...

    • @JosephCenter
      @JosephCenter  5 років тому

      You are strangely critical of UA-cam videos for, well, having spent time watching UA-cam videos. :P And thanks for being frank, though it was really quite unnecessary.
      The measurement problems of the drum shell had nothing to do with the thickness of the shell, the measurement of which is what you are referring to. Rather the problems I had with this drum were with its outer diameter, which arose from a difficulty in cutting this extremely hard/dense wood with my weak tools (something the client was well aware of before ordering the drum and a risk he willingly accepted if I would attempt to build the drum). You are correct, of course, that a ruler, with its face perpendicular to the inside shell, will not give a precise measurement on its inner thickness under the circumstances shown in the video. Apart from the fact that I was not looking for a precise measurement (there was simply no need), but only ensuring that I did not go too thin, I showed the ruler face-up only for the benefit of the camera, so that the viewer could see the approximate depth of the incorporated reinforcement ring. For my own measurements, I turned the ruler on its side, which got me as precise a measurement as I needed.
      Thanks again. (Oh, and I'll be frank for a moment, too: You might want to check your spelling and grammar before posting next time. They're really atrocious. Oh! I'm overlooking that this is a comment posted under a UA-cam video! Cheers, Roger!)

      @@JosephCenter The spelling errors are a product of a smart phone that ignores my wishes and changes what I type. I have had to go back five times and correct what I typed to this point.
      Why am I watching You Tube if I am so critical? After 30 years of standing on concrete floors as a mold maker and prototype machinist my back and legs let go. Find myself in conditions where it is either sleep or watch the mindless TV programs chose by others.
      As far as the errors shown on You Tube, such as failing to make measurements correctly, no excuse. People with no experience watch You Tube to learn and they repeat every mistake shown because "It would not be aired unless it was right".
      During my lifetime I have seen people hurt, people who lost a ton of money, and small companies fail simply because of improper training and bad trade practices.
