- awesome narration - original Oblivion music - original spoken dialogue included - no overwhelmingly loud combat noise It's the perfect lore video to listen to while doing stuff. Can't wait for the rest of the mages guild story
Although this has nothing to do with the questline, one thing that I like about Oblivion is the ambiance. They did a fantastic job melding visual and sound design when it came to the outside weather. The wind always felt blustery, the rain and snow felt cold and wet, and it always felt nice when the sun came out after a storm while traveling the countryside.
The first time I did the Bruma quest I didn't know you needed a high enough disposition to get Volanaro to help with finding J'skar so I just ended up buying a dispel other spell and using it to make him appear on my own. Him and Volanaro have different (albeit more annoyed) dialogue if you do it this way and Jeanne no longer makes the comment about misplacing something when you go to tell her you found J'skar. The only downside about doing it this way is if you don't get Volanaro to give you the task to grab the book from Jeanne's room first then he wont teach you the Open Easy lock spell
I remember doing the mages guild right after finishing the dark brotherhood and loved the contrast. DB: Evil organization, basically hated by everyone yet it's members stick together and the "upper management" upholds their rules diligently making the whole organization highly efficient. Mages Guild: Highly esteemed and renowned official institution riddled with corruption and incompetence. Their members often seem to dabble into their own affairs and borderline college fraternity shenanigans instead of working for the benefit of their guild.
The Mages Guild in Morrowind is probably just as corrupt and incompetent. The Archmage is a moron and one of the hall leaders coerces mages into joining and paying ridiculous dues.
@@sumpwa to be fair, none of the arch mages we see are particularly good at their job. In Morrowind you can just beat up the arch mage in a duel do the death. In Oblivion the arch mage soul traps himself. In Skyrim the arch mage gets blasted when dealing with something way over his head. At least the college of Winterhold isn't corrupt, because for corruption there needs to be some level of bureaucracy that can be corrupt. On the college everyone just does whatever. Like the students who get themselves killed through lack of oversight, the guy who manages to soul trap himself with Keening, and the newest apprentice who becomes arch mage within a week, just because they can beat up the undead.
One tid-bit of info that I don't think was mentioned in this video is that each of these guilds also has a specialization in a school of magic. So you can get certain unique spells from each. You can almost see it in *some* of the recommendation quests. The ones that stand out to me is Bravil you keep getting charm spells, which are illusion spells. Cheydinhal you get the weighted ring, and feather/burden are Alteration spells. Leyawin's story I could kinda see how her missing pendent is dispelling (mysticism spell) her affliction. I feel like if you flipped Chorrol and Skingrad, they'd match this too. Chorrol is about conjuration so saving the dude from the zombies, it'd make sense. For Skingrad, they're destruction, and the lady is trying to find a destruction spell. I wonder if that was an original intent and it got shifted for game design reasons. Here's a list of the specialties if you're curious. Anvil Mages Guild - Restoration. Bravil Mages Guild - Illusion. Bruma Mages Guild - Various. Cheydinhal Mages Guild - Alteration. Chorrol Mages Guild - Conjuration. Leyawiin Mages Guild - Mysticism. Skingrad Mages Guild - Destruction.
I think the Chorrol one is my favorite. There are quite a few different dialogues that can happen or different outcomes in this particular recommendation quest. Also that spell you get is very hard to even fire, if you don't have a magicka-heavy character or custom fortify magicka items, there is no way to cast the spell. I have a Breton character with many fortify magicka items, custom or rare artifact ones, so I believe I can cast the spell twice with full (but also heavily fortified) magicka, so probably still only once with the regular full magicka.
I used to play with God Mode on, and (as a kid) I found the code to give all the spells, so I would use it at the max level all the time and just obliterate everything.
If you give Teekeeus FOTM, Earana will of course, be angry, but will ask you to retrieve the book. Teekeeus hides the book in his chest, which I think is 'hard'. I prefer doing the quest this way as Teekeeus is trying to protect you and Earana just uses you, to do all the work, even though you get the spell either way. Plus increasing your lockpick skill is always a bonus. I complete thieves guild quests after this, and a particular quest involves aquireing a certain something. If you've completed Mages guild (all quests) beforehand, the quest is very simple and humourous as bethesda planned for it.
I love how in this guild questline all of the suspicious characters look like they're about 5 crack pipes deep into their bender. I'm glad that the mages guild isn't judging by appearance but it cracks me up where most of the quests are like "We don't know who is causing problems in the guild! Speak with our resident crackhead dressed in black, surely he will help!"
I always assumed the zombies around Erthor had something to do with necromancy too, but I always thought some necromancer had knowledge that Erthor was alone in the cave and saw an opportunity for an easy kill. Just always struck me as a little foreshadow-y, like the necromancers are trying to quietly pick off some guild members before making a real move on the guild itself.
Leyawiin recommendation for me is by far the worst hate it feels more like a generic dungeon delving quest Ngl you make me want to go back replay Oblivion again
I always give the fingers of the mountain to the guild then steal it back to give to erana its basically the same thing but you get your recommendation faster
It's actually possible to watch the person burn himself (on the last recommendation quest) and watch imps and stuff that can cast fireball to burn themselves over there.
I've never done Kud Ei's quest via stealing. I think I'd like to see all routes in a video like this. Weird stuff is fun too. For example, in "Two sides of a coin" you can kill Tyrellius Logellus while in jail but it basically doesn't count. The only way to save Arnora, the only one who didn't want to kill anyone, is to fail the quest and kill Jorundr.
It's weird how occasionally Bethesda character models can actually look decent. Jeanne Frasoric looks way more human than most humans in Oblivion. Red Lucy in New Vegas is the other one that stands out to me as actually looking like a human rather than a mannequin with human skin stretched over it.
Man, I love the Mage's Guild questline. Oblivion really had the best quests in the whole series. On a side note, I've heard that sound at 55:16 quite a bit in the past, but have never been able to place what it's supposed to be (maybe a rumbling stomach?) Anyone have any ideas?
N the fingers of the mountain quest. Have u ever tried a fireball on the rock? If I remember right it shoots back. I think I got n a fight with someone or something that shot fireballs and I took it over there and it instakilled them. Pretty sure it's the fingers of the mountain stone
For some reason, way back when 18 years ago when I went to get the first recommendation for picking up that book (Fingers of the Mountain or something) as soon as I picked it up it's like it was booby trapped or something and killed me. Maybe it was an unrelated coincidence because I've seen plenty of videos of people grabbing it without incident, who knows.
Uh i didn't know you could complete brazil's quest that way. You can also use the charm scroll/spell on the guy and he'll offer to sell the staff to you cause he likes you if you don't wanna steal.
Seriously Varen. Selling the staff? I understand that he was in rage and took it in the moment. I don't approve of it, but I can understand it. But selling it? He could've just put it somewhere in the guild hall where she will find it and stay quiet about it. But no, he had to make it worse.
This questline has a great premise but as usual with Bethesda they lack logic and details. However the biggest sin was how utterly they ruined Manimarco. He was such a badass in Daggerfall but this game made him a pathetic saturday morning cartoon villain. It also doesn't help that the necromancers are just a far inferior rehash of the mystic dawn that's in the same game. Did none of the quest designers or writers ever communicate? Did they not see how redundant it was? Oblivion contradicts itself a lot due to this.
@@ABardsBallad I wish the necromancy aspect would have more impact. Like having them raise lots of thralls that get in the way when fighting them. Or having someone that accompanies you on the quest, who dies, and then gets ressurected by the necromancer to oppose you.
Also, if there’s one thing I learned about the Mage’s Guild questline it’s this: your Argonian guildmates are the real heroes
Marsh friend best friend
- awesome narration
- original Oblivion music
- original spoken dialogue included
- no overwhelmingly loud combat noise
