  • Some Christmas lighting materials that I feel are worthy of mention for this season. Please excuse the extreme exposure variation. If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:-
    www.bigclive.co...
    This also keeps the channel independent of UA-cam's advertising algorithms allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

    heard this from the kitchen where I'd gone to get a drink and nearly fell over laughing.

    That's awesome. I watch your channel for the technical info, and the general cheeriness that you exhibit. The fact that you are willing to help someone find a lost relative is truly heartwarming. It only took a few seconds to make the announcement, but it's the thought behind it that really makes you think.

    Merry "Whatsit" day Clive. It was -7 degrees C this morning when I got up. Bloody cold weather. I remember your work in Glasgow on the Xmas lights from a few decades ago. I never knew I'd ever see one of those responsible for it on UA-cam, especially as I emigrated to the USA a while back. Ah yes, Craigie Street. We used to have to clear the "ladies" away from the loading dock of a certain office building whenever we had a delivery. It was THAT long ago!!!

    With all of those sets which run off two 1.5V cells, you can replace one of the cells with a Joule Thief circuit and run them off of one cell instead. Because the Joule Thief can continue to run down to a very low voltage, you get about the same life out of a single cell as you'd get out of two cells, so you're effectively doubling the life and halving your costs regarding batteries.
    Yes, I did that myself, with three identical 2-cell LED strings. I salvaged the makings of the coils from dead CFL lamps. The only other components you require are a bipolar NPN transistor (almost any bipolar NPN transistor will work) and a 1K Ohm resistor.
    Each CFL I've opened has had two suitable coil formers. One is a choke on a ferrite core and the other is a toroidal transformer. There's enough wire on the choke to wind two coils. You need two windings each of around 35-40 turns.

      For making sets of lights, does anyone know of any place to get that clear PVC insulated (7/0.20mm?) wire similar to that the Poundland battery Xmas lights are made with?
      I ordered some packs of 100 colour changing RGB 5mm LEDs, advertised as slow (and also 100 fast) from the Chanzon UK store to make up some strings with:
      www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01C19END2?m=A29VZUSG1WM39I&ref_=v_sp_widget_detail_page
      I loved the explanation in replies by Paul Sengupta to zh84 (about 10 comments below) that the flicker has been produced by modulating the signal to the LED with an audio signal playing "Fur Elise" or "Happy Birthday" as from musical greetings cards on some early flickering lamps - brilliant!

    Is 31v a standard UK volatge for lights like this? 12v and 24v are usually standard here in the US.

    • @BigClive
      @BigClive  6 років тому +22

      It has evolved as a standard for LED strings. Probably because the typical forward voltage of an LED is 3V so multiples of ten in series add up to 30V. That allows easy multiples of ten in a string. 50, 100, 200, 500 etc.

    • @JasperJanssen
      @JasperJanssen 6 років тому +6

      bigclivedotcom Americans are generally not so decimal, so maybe the easy 4 or 8 multiples - giving you easy dozens - is preferred there.

    • @tissuepaper9962

      Jasper Janssen Can confirm. Christmas lights generally come in strings of 120ct and 240ct here.

    • @danielplusben
      @danielplusben 6 років тому

      The transformer outputs 24vac, then the flasher unit / multi function controller output 31vdc. Then, the new plugs with the controllers inside incorporated both of these together, so the output is 31vdc.

    • @JasperJanssen
      @JasperJanssen 6 років тому

      Alpha Road Christmas Lights 2 that seems like a ridiculously expensive way of doing things, to upconvert from 24 to 31V rather than just using a 31V adapter in the first place. At least when you are selling complete sets.

    Hey Clive, I have a set of the lights you showed at 7:50 . After using them for about two weeks, every other LED on the string began to get dimmer slowly until they no longer functioned. Yet the other LEDs that work run normally, batteries aren't flat either. Sounds like a problem with the polarity switching circuitry that I figured I would share with you.

    • @BigClive
      @BigClive  6 років тому +1

      If you have tried fresh batteries then it could be the H-bridge. Easiest way to test would be to cut the two wires and swap them. On some of these they have greens and blues in one polarity and reds and yellows on the other. If the battery voltage is low only the reds and yellows may light.

  • @direwind1
    @direwind1 6 років тому +5

    Merry Xmas! I have a question for bigclive!
    Why does it have a warning on long rolled extension cables to unwind fully before use?

    • @johnfrancisdoe1563
      @johnfrancisdoe1563 6 років тому +4

      direwind1 The thickness of copper in cables is just enough that it won't heat the plastic beyond a safe limit (usually 70°C) at full load. But if it's rolled together, the heat can't escape fast enough and overheats (at high or full load).

    • @BigClive
      @BigClive  6 років тому +7

      It's for thermal dissipation. If you leave a cable rolled up on a drum and use it to power a high load the cable will get hot and possibly start to melt. It's fine to leave excess length rolled up if the load is very light like Christmas lighting.

    • @direwind1
      @direwind1 6 років тому +4

      Thanks, haha unwinding as we speak as I do have a high load on them!

    • @WaltonPete
      @WaltonPete 6 років тому +1

      I once repaired a friends vacuum cleaner where the cable reel had melted due to the same problem. It was quite a high powered machine and they'd obviously used it a lot without the cord fully unwound from the dispenser. Easy fix and I advised them to follow the instructions to unwind it fully before use in future.

    very nice lights indeed. i love having a photo realistic ips monitor they show up pretty much as you describe them to be in the video. thats only way be able to see them as good as can take it the camera settings are tuned enough. love how when something goes wrong and just like eh find out what happened later. if it was me im always like.. well bad words and anger later rofl. Merry Christmas. happy new year lets hope for more explosions and more cool led tech comes our way.

    I keep seeing little battery powered sets like this at my local Superstore (a Canadian chain) for between $10-20 depending on the set. No dollar store carries them around here.

      E-bay is your friend.

      I've bought a number of things off e-Bay. I've found shipping to always take a while, and depending on the shipping charges and conversion rates, it might not be worth it. Depends on what you're getting.
      Order from somewhere like Digi-Key, and you'll have it within 1-2 business days as long as they have it in stock, which is very nice.

    Merry Christmas, Clive to you and your family. Hope you have a wonderful day. Any chance you could post the links to the lights you're showing? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks. Merry Christmas again!! 🎄🎅🎁
