Review: 2024 Nissan Z Nismo - Disappointing in So Many Ways

  • I spend a few days with the 2024 Nissan Z Nismo to see what it's like to live with and how it performs compared to its competitors. Unfortunately, the Z Nismo comes up short for a variety of reasons and as a result, it's a pretty big disappointment in my book. Do you agree or disagree with my complaints about the Z Nismo? Thanks to Nissan for providing this vehicle to review.

      They nailed it with the looks and exhaust note, but drivers want a manual H pattern option. Even if they were dead set on making it an auto they should have did something bonkers like using the GT-R trans axle rear to justified this price jump. I still think just throwing in an upgraded CD009/A with some well chosen ratios and the 1.5 way Nismo diff would have helped distinguish it from the other cars mentioned.

      Agreed, they should have used the naming conventions from the 350z and a lot of this confusion would be averted, like call the Base the Grand Touring, then have a Performance, and Track versions. Also have a MT bare bones Tuner version.The slushbox is a mistake, but a DCT would have been a waste on this car, either folks want to row their own gears or they just want the car to shift for them 99% of the time. Like all the GMA T.50s are going to be H pattern stick shift for a reason, and cars that resell for more as an auto than a stick shift are rare. But yeah they did a good job in so many other areas, they really should have put a H pattern shifter and some much better looking interior options in the Nismo, for that price at least.

Hopefully they will smarten up and knock ten grand off this price, then offer a real racer version that uses the GT-R rear end. The only downside would be no manual but using the DCT in the rear with a bit more kW should help it to justify a $70k price tag. Then again Nismo cars have pretty much always been pricey and never really set the world on fire, it was the aftermarket like Mines and AMS that shows the real potential of a Nissan chassis.

    Hey Matt, very very honestly about the Z cars in general; first off I am just happy Nissan is still making them regardless of them being a bit disappointing compared to other sports cars in the same market segment. However I did test drive the last version of the Nismo Z and it was well balanced, good chassis and not bad but the engine just felt very slow for a car in the second highest position in Nissan's product stack. Fun car for sure but it felt like it wanted about +100hp and torque for it to feel exciting on the go fast pedal. Good starting point but a bit heavy and again need more power to feel the way I would want. Great review as always Matt and agree on the overall feel but a sad non-inspiring engine. I do like the new look and again excellent chassis.

  • @backnu
    @backnu 7 місяців тому +6

    I'll start watching your reviews again. I most certainly appreciate the honesty! I was just talking about this car yesterday. I have owned at least 10 Z cars over the years and I'm simply not impressed with Nissan since the 2007 Nismo. Yes, they have made minor improvements, but every upside seems to have a downside.
    For example, from the 350z to the 370z, the pros have cons to go with it. The added power in the 370z causes the engine to overheat. The brakes are a bit larger, but fade comes in fast. It seems like a half baked car for at least 16 years.
    I really want to like the new one - but the Nismo should be cheaper than a 1le.
    You're paying Zl1 money for a car that's on an old chassis - it's missing active exhaust, active dampers, an E-lsd, a head up display,and a dedicated track mode but you're paying for it.
    Hard pass Nissan. For 66k starting, it should have the GTRs DCT, active exhaust, and active dampers. This car wreaks of bean counters.

      @@jacquesc3166 it's a totally half-baked car. You are paying for a lot of parts that are missing. It's simply overpriced. It should not cost more than a Camaro 2SS 1le. ..and that car comes with a Modern chassis , head up display, Elsd, active exhaust, active suspension, dual zone climate control, premium Bose, and a manual.
      And it handily outpaces the Z. I'm also one that likes peace of mind with a warranty - and leaving it up to the aftermarket, I've seen enough science projects and blown engines to never want to go down that road. The 370Z Nismo suffered the same fate of being far too expensive for what you got. NVH has been bad on the past 3 gens, especially for what they weigh. Adding a harsh non adjustable suspension (which all other competitors have) and droning non-variable exhaust (again, that all others have) certainly isn't helping. Not to mention at this price point I would expect better tires than what come on a WRX...which all the competitors have. It's not an all new car, it's the same platform as the past 2 generations, so why on earth is the price so high? Makes absolutely no sense unless the suits at Nissan think they have to have some crazy profit margin.

A complete interior redesign with futuristic/up-to-date technology. You just can't keep trotting out the same interior guts with slight "upgrades"?? and call it a day. And I'm with you on the choices ! I have a Mustang PP2, but Ford has drastically increased the prices. A Darkhorse Handling Package equipped with Magride, leather, and active exhaust is 72k. That's equipped the same way my car is with leather. That's insane for a glorified Mustang GT. No bespoke engine- no supercharger. It's insane! Ford has found some suckas. Throw the word "track package" in; pay some people to make it seem faster on track ...and the wallets open. The Cars and Coffee guys love to standby their cars and brag. Just don't let them hit a bump because most of them will complain about ride harshness .
    So I've started looking at M2's and Supras. A better car with a better build and a lot more engineered.
    And if you look at the 2024 Mustang, please be sure to take a good look at the front headlight gap. It's noticeable as well as the poor bumper fitment on the rear.
    It's Ford being Ford. Don't get me wrong, but quality is not job 1 there. I had similar issues with my 1les as well. Just spotty quality and materials.

      @backnu 7 місяців тому +1

      @@georgevigil7001 honestly, I get an extended warranty with any car. It may be way more expensive than the Z to repair, but it should be a solid car. I would honestly leave the car stock other than suspension and maybe an exhaust. It's good from the start. I used to have the mindset of high repair cost, but after having an Audi and a BMW for years, you choose wisely on the engine and years.
      And if we are enthusiasts, we learn how to do things ourselves. I'll buy the BMW all day over the Nismo. And that's saying something because I used to be the biggest Nissan fan until I wasn't. I have owned at least 10 Z cars a couple of Maxima's and a Pathfinder. I've also been waiting for a Z. This is a half-assed attempt at price gouging for a parts-bin special with a body kit.

      Yes it was a different engine, however it is the same chassis and probably still has the same air flow problems and would not be surprised if the engine and brakes still share the same coolant tank. Thing needs an engine hood vent and brake ducts/vents and has needed it for many years. Base engine was very reliable from what I understand but mine would often overheat on hot days in traffic to the point where the engine coolant gauge would go into the red zone and brakes would start to fail. Not even tracking it. Problem would go away if I turned on the air conditioning. I am guessing the AC fan gave it the extra engine bay airflow it needed but still a poor cooling system. My engine also had a carbon buildup problem in the throttle body. Never had a car with that problem before.

One VR30 is enough for me, they really needed ZF8/DTC in the VR’s to make them shine in all honesty. Only Nissan product I’d consider is the GTR, but it’s very old & outdated. It is an iconic JDM car nonetheless 😍🙏 Nissan/Infiniti have lost me a customer & look forward to moving to an M car while keeping the Q as a daily driver. Thank you for your honesty as a JDM fanboy myself!

    Never expected this car would try to kill Matt. It's refreshing to see you do a negative review this year.

    Matt, I agree with you 100 percent, Nissan priced this car wrong and very shameful not having real metal paddle shifters, that is sad, they saved pennies while asking for lots of dollars for this car. Now I think you need to have a redo with this car, I think you had bad tires or it was too cold overnight maybe? I know someone that has a new Z, not the Nismo but, he watched your video and agreed there was something wrong with the tires on the car you had. I know it is priced wrong, but to be fair you did not have a good driving experience because it was not connecting properly, not your fault, but can't give a proper review, clearly that car had a tire issue.

      I think it’s just the way these tires are designed. Others said they’re basically street-legal race tires, and require an extensive warmup, which is not a great choice for a road car in my opinion. But I don’t think the tires were compromised in any way.

    60 degree temps is cool weather for 200 TW tires. They need heat for peak grip. This is the only review I’ve seen where someone complained of grip or vehicle dynamics. He also seems predispositioned. The M2 m, I couldn’t do. I have to get out of it and look at it. Same with the new Mustang. Same with C8’s, just too gaudy. Supra, maybe. But I’m happy with my V1 370Z Nismo.

    I saw this and started leaning towards the GTR. Then, I notice that price tag sky rocketed too.

    "I'm imagining lot's of these on copart," That's some inside baseball there =). With how many Pathfinders Nissan is currently selling, they'll hopefully be able to use some of that cash to upgrade this car going forward.

    The fact that you get way more car in the competitor to the nismo z the 3.0 supra manual for less $$$ is embarrassing. You can even fully load one and it still comes out less than the nismo z.

    Yea I just don't get it. I forgot what I paid for my supra, maybe high 50's, low 60's? And that has the active suspension, exhaust, etc., WAY quieter on the highway from what I heard there (although that may not be accurate), and handles real well in the twisties. Only downsides I'd say are the harder ingress/egress due to the low A-pillar and the higher likelihood of problems because it's a BMW. But those 2 things aside? Way better, and way cheaper.
    And yeah, now I'm considering a C8, and I'd never even dream of cross-shopping that with this. Maybe 10k more the way I want it, but way better everything. I just don't get how you can justify this.
    The 370 both base and nismo were very good cars, and while the nismo was a bit steep, the base was pretty good for what you got, IMO. I enjoyed the hell out of it too. New for new (compared to back when I drove one new) I'd rather have the 370 than the Z, and that shouldn't be the case.
