This was my Grandmas favorite movie. Growing up as a kid I didn’t really appreciate it. Now I do. She passed away last week at 93 due to COVID 19. This song will always remind me of her. Good bye sweet Maggi.
1965 I remember being 10 years old, sitting in the big cushy seats in the theater and seeing the wide screen project this majestic beauty, the pristine voice of Julie Andrews and the dynamic orchestra. Unforgettable.
Twelve or so years of age here, in the plush red seats of the Royal Theatre in the small Nova Scotian town of my parents' postwar exile, in 1965 or 1966. (It took a long time for blockbuster films to get as far as the Royal Theatre, in the so-slow Canadian distribution network.) So sad to hear that she lost her precios singing voice a few years ago due to using it so much and some damage in her vocal pipes. So glad she made such good memories with her voice and shared her talent with the world while it lasted ❤️
Well, thanks not only to Julie but to screenwriter Ernest Lehman, even though the characters of Mary Poppins & Maria seem similar on paper, the way Andrew portrays and her underlying character motivation is so different from Poppins that i hardly ever think of the 2 as similar
I love that soaring shot of the glorious Austrian alps as the helicopter approached Julie. And then she breaks into song with her beautiful voice. I’m on the verge of tears, this is just magnificent.
They had a difficult time getting that shot. They had finished shooting all of the location scenes except that one on a Tuesday, and had planned to do the helicopter shot the next morning. Wednesday morning it was raining, so they had to call Hollywood to see if they would allow them to wait until Thursday to shoot it. They said yes. Thursday morning it was still raining, so they called Hollywood again to ask if they could shoot it the following day. They said yes, but told them if they couldn't get the shot Friday they'd have to return home without getting that shot. Friday morning it was no longer raining, and they got that famous shot. The downdraft from the helicopter knocked Julie Andrews down a few times when the helicopter got close to her as they were filming multiple takes.

I agree with you, this movie hit many important topics and is beautiful from the scenery to the music. I'm always so excited to watch it and it is one of my favorite films. but im only 16 what do i know lol
The whimsy in this is stunning. I wish I could feel the grace that Julie Andrews felt in the mountains. Her voice paired with the scenery makes me dream that I can one day run through the mountains tops in perfect weather and feel the wind carry my soul to a happier place.
It's so carefree and blissful! Yes, the music pairs beautifully with the setting. I wish I could go there someday. Although funnily enough, during shooting it wasn't perfect weather. It was actually quite cold, and it rains a lot in Austria so that kept making things complicated! On top of that, the wind created by helicopter they used to take the shot of her spin kept knocking her flying into the dirt every single time they shot it! But it all came together to create one of the most beautiful and memorable pieces of cinema ever 💕

I thought I heard Christopher Plummer’s name mentioned a few times recently. I was hoping this wasn’t the reason why. He will be missed very much by so many people, including me. I can still remember seeing The Sound of Music in a re-release to theaters c. 1973. I was so fortunate to see it on one, huge, Wide Screen in a large theater right down the road from where I lived. Julie Andrews was so beautiful and funny. And that VOICE. I loved her. But, by the end of that film, I was in love with Christopher Plummer. Tall. Dark hair. Stern, serious face, but when he smiled, a mischievous grin. The suits. SO handsome. He had beautiful hands. And the fingers of both hands would fidget a little as he walked. That fascinated me. I will NEVER forget that. I imitated that fidgeting for a while after I saw that film. Over many years I saw him many times. He played heroes, villains and ordinary men, all with the same ease. Yeah, I will miss him a lot.

RIP Christopher Plummer. I will say this about The Sound of Music: As a young boy, it was my first experience of seeing a couple break up--that is, between the Captain and the Baroness (the blonde). I was struck with how "amiable" it was although with a felt tension, AND they avoided eye contact. The Baroness seemed more distressed with it. And I said to myself: So this is how a couple breaks up. Somewhat naive, I know, but I took it for what it was worth.
The Baroness did try to run her off, but once Maria comes back she knew she didn’t stand a chance. It’s sometimes better to bow out gracefully and save face than make a scene.
@@Spiderfan85 The Baroness saw what was happening before the Captain realized he was falling in love with Maria but then women are always more intuitive than us clueless guys.
I loved this movie. Every opportunity I watched it. My mom bought the record with the book in it and all the songs so I learned them and became my favorite...
My favorite movie growing up still to this day a complete masterpiece. I absolutely love Julie Andrew’s. Everything about this song/ scenery/ movie makes me so happy and nostalgic
For 24 years, this is the second time I watched this clip. I was 6 years old when I first watched the full movie. This brings me nostalgia. I felt like my past just happened today.
Puts me on the floor of my grandmother and grandfather’s old farm house. I had to choke down the tears this movie moved me to several times as I watched. Julia’s voice is omnipresent in my head. As is Judy Garland. As is Audrey Hepburn (tho she was not a singer so much a dancer actor) I may have been stuck in a religious bubble, but I am grateful for these peep holes of bright light vintage cinema would entrance me in. The whole world is truly alive, with The Sound of Music
I seriously hope they don’t do a remake or sequel like they did with Mary Poppins. Julie Andrews and the magic she brought with her can never be replaced.
My dad z frm uganda wen he went to London he brought this film and I enjoyed t wen I was young bt my dad passed away and wen I wat to remember I cm here to wotch this movi

The hills are alive with the sound of music
With songs they have sung for a thousand years
The hills fill my heart with the sound of music
My heart wants to sing every song it hears
My heart wants to beat like the wings of the birds that rise from the lake to the trees
[Verse 2]
My heart wants to sigh like the chime that flies from a church on a breeze
To laugh like a brook as it trips and falls over stones on its way
To sing through the night like a lark who is learning to prey
I go to the hills when my heart is lonely
I know I will hear what I've heard before
My heart will be blessed with the sound of music
And I'll sing once more
[Verse 3]
To laugh like a brook as it trips and falls over stones on its way
To sing through the night like a lark who is learning to prey
I go to the hills when my heart is lonely
I know I will hear what I've heard before
My heart will be blessed with the sound of music
And I'll sing once more

My middle school choir teacher showed us this movie. SOOO greatful for her!💖
My middle school choir teacher showed us BASIC INSTINCT (1992). I guess we went to very different schools. 😉
beautiful music, wonderful voice, our family’s favorite movie.
Every time I talk with my mother about this movie, which is often, she always says "at least the Baroness bowed out gracefully" LOL. Every time.
Im am 31 now and this movie is my all time favorite ❤️❤️❤️
I watched the Sound of Music many times.
Late Grandmothers favorite musical, to mark the Spring rememberence of her, l wish to play this in her memory....today.♥️💗💕🌺
This just calms me down
I loved this movie. Every opportunity I watched it. My mom bought the record with the book in it and all the songs so I learned them and became my favorite...
I sing and listen to this song when my heart is lonely....
Recently watched this masterpiece in Mumbai , India
My favorite movie growing up still to this day a complete masterpiece. I absolutely love Julie Andrew’s. Everything about this song/ scenery/ movie makes me so happy and nostalgic
To remember our youngest age... Love It.
It's timeless. I enjoyed it. Youngest age love I guess?
For 24 years, this is the second time I watched this clip. I was 6 years old when I first watched the full movie. This brings me nostalgia. I felt like my past just happened today.
Anyone here at 2024?
Love this movie
❤❤❤17❤❤meee😂🎉🎉
😂😂😂
I’m rehearsing this for an audition! XD
This is one of one Julie can't be duplicated!
I seriously hope they don’t do a remake or sequel like they did with Mary Poppins. Julie Andrews and the magic she brought with her can never be replaced.
@@snowbird1381 I agree 100%....stage play yes do a revival on Broadway by all means but do not remake the movie !

I remember watching this maybe when I was 3 or 4 years old. And I still do. I still have the tape. Thankful enough to watch this.
the areal shot and the whirl created a beautiful moment of cinematic history.
God I love this movie so much 😭 we owned it on vhs and because it was so long it had to be split into 2 tapes, I remember always being the one sitting next to the vcr ready to put in part 2 😂
Yep... The Hills are Alive with Julie Andrews! :D Bravo!
One of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard in my entire life
One of the most iconic movie openings ever
This is the most iconic opening scene in movie history. Simple, unique, beautiful, inspired,!
I have loved this since 1968, when I first saw it!! ❤
(And who wouldn't sing alone on a hill, if they had a FULL orchestral accompaniment with them??) 😃
My mum took me into Manchester to see this when it came out. She absolutely loved it.
Still one of the best film openings ever made.
This movie and song is my childhood
I'm here because Cynthia Erivo sang this at The Jimmy Fallon Show ❤
Truly today if only those that deny history should know what our ancestors went through to come to this country! Beautiful and so thankfully blessed I am here!
I loved this movie…🌹🌹🌹
My grandparents took us to see this movie! They loved it and so did I as a teenager. We loved our music❤
