This task is amazing, really makes you realise how difficult it is to connect cause and effect. And how easy it is to find false correlations.
@@josephbach1 "that knowing cause and effect isnt important to solve a problem", true, until we started to actually solve problems instead of just winging them. Which was the point where animals started to use tools, which then separated the humans from animals. Which then allowed humans to gain knowledge of causing the effect of fire.
Which also enabled us to increase our average world wide live expectancy from 35 years to 70 years within a decade due to research. While having people figuring out steam engines, electricity, computers and internet. Trial and error (like shown in the task) is the process to figure out cause and effects, to be able to get a predictable successful results in daily routines.
Which basically makes Science and Engineering like needing to say a different letter at each step and clapping on every second red, to avoid setting of the alarm, and have the findings documented for everyone to be able to reproduce the result.
Extend this to real life problems such as COVID and Global Warming, where trial and error takes far longer, and it isn't hard to understand why we are in such a mess.

It's not actually that profound. This was a completely arbitrary and fabricated cause and effect. The only way to discover it would be through pure brute force trial and error.
Figuring out cause and effect in real world situations where the cause and effect have some kind of rational relationship isn't the same. And the correlations they were observing were not false. The actions they observed did indeed take place immediately before the alarm triggered. So that is a valid correlation to consider. They just weren't the actions that were actually causing the alarm to trigger.
@@Rowgue51 But in a lot of real world cases the rationality of the relationship isn’t understood until long after the cause and effect is found.
Look at the history of diseases. Knowledge of germs is relatively modern, and working out why everyone is dropping dead (is it bad smell? Bad food? Bad water? Bad air?) is pretty tricky stuff without that knowledge.

@@Naebun they don’t usually leave the studio discussion out of these videos, plus they don’t put the UA-cam videos out until AFTER it’s aired on TV.
I think it's because Taskmaster is literally free on UA-cam, and has both full episodes and bits from the show. Also, editing is better.

Religions have some good things in there like morals but there's a lot of wawawawawa in there that has nothing to do with the real things that should be focused on. They think that the religion is the reason they're gonna get a good place in the afterlife when it's really about the development of love and morals.

And they leave out what would have been the best part, the contestants realizing what the puzzle was and their reaction to it.

@@nfwarrior3000 you must be quite a simple person if you think all possibilities were explored there, the T rule was very clearly highlighted, but the 7 second talk reset could be more specific as they cut off the end in this video and didnt show. could very easily be "you have to talk with the letter W" if the fail condition is letter dependant, the pass condition could also be. dont make conclusions before you try every possible avenue, brainlet
Alex Horne & his team are just brilliant for coming up with different exciting tasks each time. Not entirely sure but I don't think they've repeated a task in 11 seasons.
Edit: Certain tasks have been repeated since Series 11. They're still a brilliant team regardless.
Pretty sure there's a task where you buy something for the taskmaster for £20, but I'm not sure that counts since that's clearly intentional.
I actually wouldn’t mind to see some tasks repeated. Everyone is different and would approach the task in a new way. I wouldn’t mind a few or so being repeated.
@@spareumbrella8477 honestly i thought it would be a reoccurring task every season, but i guess they just decided to not use that task after a couple of seasons
The previous season to this one had very weak tasks though. Most of them were too restrictive in the wording or too complicated, or both, which ended up making that season boring because the contestants were unable to come up of clever ways to solve the tasks without going against the restrictions.
@@david54181 That's true for the creative tasks (music video for a lullaby for example) but a lot of tasks had one "best" solution (baby gap as that smallest gap) and I think it could get boring pretty quickly

If I remember correctly, making a noise resets the timer but any word with a T in it set it off.
In the Swedish version one team got through this in like their second attempt. The other team (and me) was in shock.
But did they understand how they succeeded?

I think this task would have been a lot better if they had put in a really obvious but annoying if you miss it way of figuring out the code like they’ve done in the past, wouldn’t have made for nearly as funny a result but it definitely would have felt a lot fairer if they did actually have a way of figuring it out without just doing trial and error
It would have been great if the trail was arranged so clues to the solution were visible once they were past a certain point, but the clues were vague or hard to see.

There should be some community vote on the most exiting tasks. And a pannel of the most liked contestants doing them again. Maybe with slight Iteration to the tasks.
They kind of did it in series 10. I'm not sure how many people wanted the watermelon task back but they brought it back with a nice alteration anyway.

It's between a golf course and a cemetery, at least no houses nearby to annoy. It's a nice walk from Kew Gardens if you're ever in the area. Can visit the tree of Tree Wizard.

The Rules :
If the alarm sounds you must go back to the start
If you step off the stepping stones the alarm goes off - probably ... I didn't ever see this happen ...
If you say any word with the letter T the alarm will go off
If you say nothing the alarm will go off after 7 seconds ...

Yes and no. It was his idea to make the sound of the alarm, which incidentally didn’t use the letter “t”. But that’s not THE way to win this task. And he and Mike set off the alarm less than the others. So I guess it’s accurate that he did nail it by fluke.

This is how machine learning works. This is what we call AI. They got to the end somehow. Not by learning what the rules were, but by learning how to not set off the alarm, that time. This is also how natural selection works. Eventually those who stay silent or say t die off. Nobody knew why. Nobody even thinks of saying t because those that did are dead.
He didn't nail this by a total fluke, he finally got it after many tries... Did you pick the wrong clip?
The clip shows both teams figure out a solution slowly and does not give the impression they got lucky
Irrespective of the number of tries a fluke, or dumb luck, is succeeding without knowing how or why you succeeded. Luck or chance as opposed to skill or ability.

@@SnorrioK But in most situations you know the means and the end, you know the intent and the goal, you know the method and that it can be done, like getting a hole-in-one the first time on a golf course... When you remove all of those factors and all you have is an end (that in real terms serves no actual purpose in life). You try to work out a solution, you try the assumed solution, you apply everything you can but continue to fail. Then, getting from a beginning to an end without knowing how or why isn't by knowledge, it isn't by skill, it isn't by ability, it's by pure chance.

Was the trick that saying a word with the letter 'T' in it set the alarm off, and saying a word with the letter 'R' reset the timer for the alarm?

I guess they figured Lee Mack would get the clicks they were after, and Jamali wasn't as big then as he is now, it worked, its at almost 2 million now.

I don't think that's any kind of fluke. They tried things to see which triggered the alarm and which didn't, and they found something that worked. If the goal had been to find out the rules of the alarm, that would be a different story.
I mean the other guy 'nails' the task by total fluke by saying red. Same thing as Lee mack did, but even quicker

first time I've seen this task. but this might be my favorite due to the "simple but impossible" correlation. (driving the "Task Master intro speech" written in balloons for perfect score to 2nd place and the alphabet initials list of words to gather 25 roses)
those wondering, you had to give a list of words without repeating the initial of an accepted word.
so everybody got the first word accepted. but if it was Apple then "about" & "antelope" cannot be used ever. so perfect score would have been reading a child's picture book showing "Apple" is for "A" an Elephant "E" etc
