Low costs and big practicality set the Skoda Roomster apart from rival small people carriers. It's affordable and cheap to run in any specification, and while the cabin doesn't exhibit the flair of the exterior, it's functional, well built, spacious and practical. The quirky looking body won't be to everyone's taste, but the Roomster is a sensible buy and meets the needs of those looking to transport more than your average amount of luggage without breaking the bank.
I owned one for 3 years, 160 thousand miles put on it driving all over the UK, Europe and Scandinavia with all my kit in it. I chipped it >1.9tdi< I've even slept in it . Probably the best car I ever owned! I liked the looks because it was different and true to its concept. Sporty up front and a Minivan in the rear. Take the rear seats out and its a small van. Take the middle seat out and slide the outer two inwards and its a cruiser. My Kids loved being in the back with the DVD players on the headrests. I regret selling it but the mileage was getting high on it. My Daughter keeps harping on to me about getting another one! The Yeti was a flat roofed straight door version with larger wheel arched and higher ride height and sold like hot cakes.

I inherited a Roomster and it's a great workhorse of a car with plenty of room in the back.
I have a 2008 1.6 petrol auto. I love it.
A great car for people who don't want to pay a lot.
Enough room, huge boot, and cheap. Built well [after all, it is a WV underneath], and great engines [obviously not this one].

Thank you all for the adverse comments - I want a cheap second hand one. It may just tick all the boxes for me - Practicle car for me and my wife ( to park) dayto day. German engineering. I also want to tour Europe every winter. So confort, reliabilty, safety and economy, as well as the aforementioned practicality, are all important - Add to that the second hand price ..It's a winner.
Everyone is gonna hate me for this, but I kinda like the design of it, I don't dislike it, it's just different. The Yeti seems way better though.

Lol, I didn't expect you to come back and leave feedback. We got the roomster instead of the yeti and we are pretty happy with it
The Roomster is a good car, it's just an uglier VW Caddy. I was a V.A.G tech but I'd probably have a Yeti tdi myself

Very nice car! Gears are smooth I think and interior not bland at all! I'm saying this cos my dad just got this as working car :)
I just have skoda roomster scout version 1.9 tdi 77kw 2007 best car i ever had 280xxx km just service and goo cheap practical car.

@rahulthestudt Actually it was meant for family at start but with launch of Yeti, they mostly sell it as services car. You can see that many of inside clever parts were used in Yeti. Its actually very reliable car. Yes it looks really bad from outside in my opinion also. But due to reliability and taxes, this is sold quite good to companies.

@rahulthestudt actually yes, its mostly used as 2 seated version with back storage space used by some companies.
Not bad from the front just reminds me of a hearse from the side.

I went to see Skoda about this car and noticed that on the first 2 entry cars ESP was not included. Now I live in France, and a law was recently passes that required that ESP be standard on all new cars. They wouldn't give it to me unless I paid extra for it.
Pay extra for something they are legally bound to give for free?
Its actually that bad a car, although it is ugly. Compared to a C3 Picasso...yuck!
I prefer the yeti however.

The dashboard is nice and classic, but the outside appears to have been designed by someone intentionally trying to make it look weird and ugly. The front and middle do not match at all. It looks really neurotic.

This is Scout version, not the ordinary one! I don't know why Mat didn't write/mention that.
With the introduction of Yeti for the same money, Roomster became obsolete.
isn't the weird rear side-window good idea for keeping children amused, actually? and since it is considered a cheap family car, it's for beginning families who need to transport 2-3 children with ease for not much money, then the middle seat does make a bit more sense, IMO.
what I don't really get about it is the stupid 1.2 HTP engine, which is probably good enough for a supermini, but a family car? too weak. you'd be more economical with the old bulletproof 1.6 MPI octavia used to have.
The 1.6 used to be in the Roomster, now replaced with the 1.2 TSI which is cheaper to tax, more complex and probably more expensive than the 1.6. The 1.2 HTP is useless in anything more than a Fabia two up.

That's not me being biased against Skoda - that's a FACT! Listen to ANY diesel Skoda that drives past you on the street and compare it to any other make of car that has a diesel engine - you will notice the difference. Even the small Skodas are noisy - the little Fabia can sound terribly noisy. Why is this? It's a small, light car the does't need a big, noisy engine, so why is it noisy? The answer is because ALL Skoda diesels are noisy - worse than any other make of car.
This is just one example of many as to why Skoda are an awful make that people should avoid.
I really can't understand why people buy these awful things.
They're about as noisy as other brands. I can see why you don't like the Roomster, thing is ugly as hell, but other Skodas are ok.
They're not the best, but they're not bad cars either.

It's very subjective. The Rapid, Yeti and older Octavia models look way better than most VW's except 6-7 Golfs Imo.
