    Money in a mattress is an ancient comedic trope. It’s generally supposed to represent people who don’t trust banks/stocks, etc. It probably dates back to the Great Depression when banks failed after the stock market crash.

    • @caittails
      @caittails 9 місяців тому +4

      This randomly has me wondering if this is specifically an American thing, if it dates back to our Depression, or if it’s something ubiquitous in the English-speaking world.

      I had a friend before who's granny actually did this she never went to the bank and hid all her money in her matress when she died they almost threw her mattress out until they realised the hole and 10s of thousands of pounds stuffed inside

    • @TheSlipperyNUwUdle
      @TheSlipperyNUwUdle 9 місяців тому +2

      Older people really did do that!!! A lot of people that grew up in the time of the great depression actually did hide money all around their house. I’ve seen a ton of stories of people clearing out their parents/grandparent’s homes after they pass away and finding toooons of cash hidden everywhere.

Sadly will be missed 😥😔. I remember the new ads as well. They were horrible and I changed the channel every time those came on. I hope one day they make a statue of Mr. Six at all entrances of all Six Flags around the world with the interactive iconic theme music as a tribute for everyone young and old to enjoy. 🙏

    About that Bob Iger comparison: Keep in mind that he's actually in his second run as Disney CEO after Bob Chapek was ousted as CEO after around 4 years due to bad decision after bad decision, with the final straw being him declaring that animation is only for kids and that they are making their live-action remakes for adults because "they want something for them".
    Iger initially retired from CEO and handed the position to Chapek, but the latter's tenure backfired and the position was handed back to the former.

    • @ThemeParkCrazy
      @ThemeParkCrazy  9 місяців тому +6

      Admittedly, the behind the scenes business of Disney is something that I don't know a lot about. Thanks for the insight!

    • @SamsonSilvo
      @SamsonSilvo 9 місяців тому +5

      Very much this. The vast majority of Disney's current struggles, including their recent movies underperforming, are all basically the long-term effects of Bob Chapek's brief but EXTREMELY turbulent run as Disney CEO.

    • @ninjagirl226
      @ninjagirl226 9 місяців тому +3

      Another thing with the Bob Iger part. Peltz wasn’t going after Igor’s position so of course he got a majority of the vote. To be honest the fact that Iger didn’t get 100% is alarming.
      Peltz got like 31% of the vote for the seat he was aiming for, which honestly isn’t bad with the mud slinging going around.
      I do know the media reported it as a blowout over 90%, but this was another example of showing the wrong numbers to make a situation look a certain way. Gotta love statistics.
      I also am going to say that it’s not Chapek’s fault entirely. This is because Iger really never left and was controlling everything. Even when he finally backed away for like 8 months everything put in place was previously approved by Iger including the bloated budgets on every project that has become a disaster zone. From overspending on Fox, to building the guardians coaster, to Disney+, to the movies put in theaters - all of it way over budget meaning Disney struggles to break even. I didn’t care for him, but Chapek is the fall guy for Iger’s legacy.
      As I have learned Disney is good at statistics and creative accounting.

    • @declanmckenna6854
      @declanmckenna6854 9 місяців тому +6

      Also during Chapek's tenure. Iger was still around and making all the decisions. His plan was to make Cheapek the fall-guy for all the poor decision he made during his first tenure (which would catch up to the company during Chapeak) and he'd swoop back in and "rescuce" the company. This failed massively as everything caught up to company way earlier and Iger's instance on alienating roughly 70% of Disney's audience in order to make a bid/connections for a political career dramatically tarnished Disney's repution (also the few decisions that Chapeak was actually able to sign off on have been the only semi-profitable/positively received things in recent years which greatly bruised Iger's fragile ego, the whole apeltz situation screams that Iger has a very fragile ego and needs to been seen as the the greatest and best CEO of all time who never made a bad decision or lost the company trillions and put the company in debt for the next 30 years to pay off several billions in loans)

      I got that game on the Wii for Christmas 2009. The game was bizarre and had a learning curve for the console. Neither my sister nor I played it much since both of us got bored with it quickly. I do remember that one of the characters mentioning that you could see Colossus when you looked through the binoculars. But when we did look through the binoculars, both of us were confused because to us Colossus (now Twisted Colossus) is the name of a roller coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain (our home Six Flags park). It wasn't until later that I found that it was the name of a ferris wheel at one of the other Six Flags parks.

    The kids' make-over aspect does sound like a sound idea for a business, but maybe for older demographics than what the Wiggles would be targeting. And maybe not marketed as a hair salon, as sitting around waiting for your hair to get done doesn't sound like the most fun activity, even with wacky hair styles. I think something more along the lines of make-up, manicures, or temporary tattoos might be more appealing. If you wanted to give kids wacky hair styles, you can always offer them wigs that they can style however they want.

Around 2000, for fright fest, they added eight skeletons around the fountain and an attraction called The Castle Escape where you go though a burning castle. This is a slap in the face to the families who lost a loved one to the fire of the Haunted Castle back in 1984. It was removed shortly afterwards.

    Six flags tv was mirroring Disney’s theme park channel with a host except it wasn’t playing on your hotel screen but instead when you were walking around. Since six flags isn’t really immersive in ride queues much it kinda made sense and gave an illusion that six flags had money and really cared about their parks and the people there. They were a bit bland and odd at times but not the worst thing ever added.

    A couple things about the New England parking.
    The sidewalk did not exist when the parking issue first started. Visitors would park in someone's yard or business, cross the street and sometimes have to cross back to go over the pedestrian bridge. Either way a lot of people walking on the main road, we all were all thinking it was just a matter of time before someone got hit.
    Also, if the town banned residents from charging people to park on their property, it would have also applied to people who do this every September when The Big E comes around. The Big E is the largest fair in the northeast, tons of traffic for 3 weeks. Residents who get to cash in on the traffic blocking their streets did not want to lose that.

    I think the salon idea would have been significantly more profitable if they put the salons inside of the parks themselves and provided free parking and early entry/ERT to those purchasing a hair cut. It would be an amazing idea to bring a kid on their birthday, give them a haircut they like, and then let them lap whatever coaster they want for an hour. I think if they charged something like $100-$120 these days plenty of people would go for it. I think it should be an all-ages salon though.

    • @OklahomaCoasterFan

      Yes, same effect. Season passholders, still today, must get a handstamp for reentry. So during a "no reentry" timeframe, usually only Fright Fest at night, that applies to season passholders. During other times, you would think that the picture tied to our pass would allow for reentry by scanning the pass again, but for whatever reason, that's not the case. One scan per day, hard rule, must get a handstamp before leaving for reentry.

    I love roller coasters but I've never been on a big one. I think the biggest one I've been on is The Fly at Canada's Wonderland. I'm afraid of the big drops and I also worry about throwing up. I don't have severe motion sickness like others but prolonged road trips (2-3 hrs) start to make my stomach hurt, especially when I'm looking at screens. If anyone has any suggestions on what to do to overcome this fear that would be great.

      My brother experienced exactly what you are explaining. I feel like slowly stepping up from smaller to larger rides would be the best bet. once you get to the larger rides, my only piece of advice is to just do it! I remember when I was a new enthusiast I was deathly afraid of the larger rides (specifically due to the stomach dropping feeling). one visit me and a friend just decided to just sent it on behemoth at CW. that was the best experience on a coaster I have had to date and found out the at the stomach dropping feeling is not worse than some of the family coaster I have ridden.
      If I were to suggest a list of coaster at Canada's wonderland to work you way up here's what they would be:
      - The Fly
      - Backlot stunt coaster
      - dragon fire
      - Behemoth or Yukon striker ( Yukon's drop might be intimidating but its a lot more tame than you think)
      Ps. For long trips try to take a break from reading a book or looking at a device. try to look out a window (it helps a lot)

      I used to be like that... until my parents bought me FL plus, I went with someone I knew who liked big rides, so sort of decided to do Levi - Long story short: I now ride it first thing in the morning

      Start with something small like an Arrow Dynamics looper. Demon at my HP is like 80 feet tall and it was like maybe the 6th roller coaster I ever went on but I loved it so much I lapped it all day and I still love it today. I’m not too familiar with CW’s line up but I believe they have some smaller thrill coasters as well, like Backlot or Dragon Fyre.

      I was petrified of the big drops for the longest time, just looking at a coaster made me panic. the way i got over it won't work for everyone, but i told two friends of mine that i trusted to force me onto a big one on our next trip, and they weren't allowed to let me talk them out of it. i was a MESS when i sat down and got buckled in but it was worth it. now i'll ride anything. i hope you find the right approach to tackle your fear because they are a lot of fun, but it's alright if that doesn't happen.
      Funny enough, my proneness to motion sickness actually lessened a lot after I started riding coasters. i recommend starting with the smoother ones so you don't get any headbanging or whiplash that could aggravate it, and then if there are ones you want to try that are known to be a bit rough you'll hopefully have some tolerance built.

    Ooh, I didn't realize Dan Snyder was in charge of Six Flags for a few years before the bankruptcy, that... explains quite a lot, actually.
    (Very brief football lesson, a blitz means the defence sends 5+ guys after the ball carrier as soon as the ball is snapped, normally they do three or four with everybody else defending against potential passing plays)

    From 2006 to 2009, my sister and I went to Magic Mountain at least 10 times during Snyder's reign. Thank goodness he decided to not sell Magic Mountain back in 2006 (along with Elitch Gardens, Frontier City, Darien Lake and a few other parks). He pulled Magic Mountain out of the sale when he noticed how much $$ that park was pulling in.

    The only thing I liked about Snyder as CEO was that the parks were completely empty. I remember visiting SFGA around 2007-08 and got there at opening time at 10am. Got on every roller coaster (around 10-12 at the time) by 1pm, then decided to ride all of them again front row and finished by 5pm. We got out at 6pm riding everything including tea cups, condor and those small rides that weren't roller coasters. We decided to eat dinner outside SFGA instead of paying a lot in the park.

    I remember when I worked at Six Flags (Great Escape) two parks were competing because their respective state's football teams were in the Superbowl. The presidents of the parks agreed to decorate their park's Sky Screamer with the winning teams logo and colors. I know New England was one of those parks. So I feel that it's likely why that slingshot was themed that way ?

    Wow, didn't know most of this, but also secretly hoping you do more Strange Six Flags stories. The coaster haircuts made me face palm and pause, cause no way that was gonna be successful. Six flags says they want families then complains about kids in the park, blaming the public for their bad running of the parks. Sounds like cocaine ran the parks for a while.
