Long ago when I was a student pilot, one of my instructors invited me along on a charter flight in a 195. I sat in the front right seat, but didn't get to fly it with a paying passenger along. I still remember the huge (to me) interior and the fast (also to me) cruising speed.
Back in the mid-70s I was working part time at a college airport and a friend restored a 195, painted like his Cessna 140A that he had previously restored. Beautiful airplanes. When he finished the 195 and pulled it out of the hangar to test run the also rebuilt Jacobs, lacking radial experience he didn't pull it through by hand before starting ... and back into the hangar to rebuild the engine. A few months later it was again ready to fly. Again. He and another pilot friend flew both planes up the coast from central California to Alaska and back that summer.
Mine too ! I think the 195 is one of Cessna's best efforts. Got to fly a 185 witch was nice, but never a 195. Just somthin about those big round motors.
When young my Dad was the pilot of Schaeffer Fountain Pen's owner. He flew this model, mostly prepositioning the owners golf bag at resorts around the country for him or delivering expensive gifts to folks as requested. He told me it was a Jewel to fly.
Just found this channel, great info. I live in Bonny Doon, California ( Santa Cruz mountains) My log cabin is just up the road from Bonny Doon airport. Rumor has it that John Travolta wanted to buy it, but the runway was too short for his private jet. I enjoy seeing an old yellow plane take off occasionally, and planes doing a low fly by. 🇺🇸👨🌾⛰🌲
@ Couldn’t sleep… uggg! and saw your reply, thanks! Beautiful, safe, quiet and peaceful but hard work living up here for this old 71 yr old guy. Especially after a small stroke due to improper medication after surgery. Can’t drive anymore, have to rely on my wife to take me into town and she is a horrible driver. BTW… before I retired I was the Lead Gardener for County of San Mateo, in charge of all the county landscaping including the Half Moon Bay airport and Redwood City airport. Used to love working around all the airplane activity.
@@AviationAZRancher Thank you, I keep pushing on. 5-6 miles a day in my Fitbit, used to be 7-10, but winter cold, rain and shorter days limit my chore time. Not bad for a disabled 71 year old. ⛰🌲👨🌾🙏🇺🇸
Spiffy AND Speedy! I couldn't even find myself wanting to fly it if I were sitting in the cockpit, I would just want to sit there for 4 hours admiring the interior.

l was lucky enough to bum a ride on a 195 , gorgeous series from the 120 to the 195 strutless wing big radial and likely my number 2 best ride...number 1 being with a '32 stearman flown by a licensed stunt instructor who happily flew it's wings off for me...a full airshow routine...unforgettable.
@@AviationAZRancher it was...he started before we had left the ground...we raced down the strip flat out he pulled it up slightly put her on the starboard wingtip carved a 180 at the end of the strip maybe 30 feet off the ground...raced right back to where we started to roll , pulled back and straight up into a delicious hammerhead stall until we clawed at the air for another inch and fell backwards into his routine...thanks SKYWAYs Langley bc
I flew a 195 with crosswind landing gear for a few hours in the late 70s to get familiar enough to teach the owner how to fly it. Very fun aircraft to fly once you got used to the crosswind gear. The owner had more money than brains and butchered the panel to install a flight director and welded the gear to help him fly it. It didn't help.
You gotta love a rich guy who blows his dough on cool looking toys! Back then the tax codes allowed buyers and manufacturers to spend money on design aesthetics. Smart business owners back then would be able to write off the entire expense of owning and operating one of these beauties.
Electric Flaps in 1949? I used to rent a 1957 Cessna 150 at VNY in the Late Sixties, and it had manual flaps. The flaps control handle was like an MG's.
If you have any cabin heater issues, feel free to hunt me down. I'm the last guy on the planet with capability to service/overhaul the Southwind heater.
