David has always been a guitarist who seems to "fly under the radar",so to speak. He was/is rarely mentioned in the list of great Metal guitarists even though he CLEARLY is a fantastic player! The criticism that I always heard was that he was a good soloist BUT he couldn't write any "memorable" songs! They also said that he'd be "better off" if he joined some already established band instead of having his own band! "Not capable of writing any "memorable" songs"??? WHAT albums and songs were they listening to??? Clearly, they weren't listening to anything from the 1st 5 Chastain albums! There's a LOT of killer songs on those albums, just listen to each album's title songs and you'll see what I mean!
that's funny because I listened to Instrumental Variations first and every freagin song on that tape was etched in my memory....so for anyone that says he doesn't write memorable riffs is full of shit. I think that he has avoided trying to be added to another band is to his unique benefit as far as his own musical legacy is concerned. I read once he had a sort of offer from Iron Maiden at one point but it didn't pan out. if I could see him in any other band that would be of benefit to another band then Megadeth could have really used him after they lost Marty Friedman.
I still have the original Chastain album (Mystery of Illusion) and it is near mint shape. My four grown sons love it to death. Unreal guitar player, and Leather was a powerful singer, and both very nice people.
You get those singers (a couple of them in in Rainbow) that can belt it out once in a studio on a really good day, with rested vocal cords. Their voices last about a song and a half on a world tour before they have to drop an octave on the high notes. Then you get this girl! Effortless live vocals as good as the studio version, all day every day. David is awesome and his collaborations with Leather still stand up today. They should have sold more than all of the soft metal bands combined.
Indeed. I never realised back in the 90s that Chastain had a female vocalist. I'm just catching up on the history of Leather Leone now that she's back.
Leather Leone Your voice...Incredible! This is great song which featured your strength, belting out those lyrics. saw you guys every trip to the thirsty whale! Met David after the shows, as well as a random on the street meet when he was producing at Seagrape Studios on Western in Chicago, CLASS ACT all the way!
Leather Leone Takes me back too! Can only store so many memories, but these days were the best of mine. Living to get the next release and catch that tour. The Whale was a tight dump, but I am sure the levels you guys played at helped shake the foundation,... but it was extremely "intimate". Seeing the video and the distance to the stage, makes me appreciate the front row, after show access and talking, and "Albums" being singed etc.
+Leather Leone I've meant to post on your site since it went up, but didn't know what to say. Turned a few others onto your albums. Have 'em all on vinyl. Oh... added you to the Female Metal Vocalists page on Wikipedia when I noticed you weren't there a few years back.
+Midan Upasaka. I couldn't agree with you more! Ever since I first found out who David and the band Chastain were (in 1990) I have loved his playing and his music. I have the "Instrumental Variations" cassette and a few other of David's Instrumental releases and have always been blown away by his skills on those albums! I read an interview with him,in a fanzine back around 1996, where he talked about that situation of being a candidate for the Maiden slot after Adrian Smith left in 1990. He was asked if he would ever again consider joining another established band, if asked, and he said that it would have to be a perfect situation for him to stop doing his own band. So far that perfect situation hasn't arisen but maybe one day it will. I have nothing but respect and admiration for David and all of his various projects, including Chastain and CJSS.
I think 'within the heat' is Chastain's masterpiece. You find everything you could possibly ask to a guitar player. From the arabian-like licks in 'desert nights' to greek acoustic in 'pantheon', not to mention the neoclassical 'The Visionary' and the wonderful ballad 'still in your eyes'. I believe David is the most complete guitar player i have ever heard.
keropiboy He is absolutely incredible,I agree! Within The Heat is a fantastic album! David deserves way more credit and attention than he's gotten over the past 30 years.
My eyes tell me I'm looking at a hot chick, but my ears tell me I'm listening to a guy with a brutal heavy metal voice. I can't believe that a girl can sing like that. When I started listening to this band it never crossed my mind, even for a second, that the vocalist may be female. Boy was I surprised when I saw a live video for the first time... This band should right next to Iron Maiden in the heavy metal history. They definitely deserve more fame and glory!
So funny, same here. Feel a bit embarrassed now. I burned through 2 cassettes of ROTW in the late eighties and never once thought it was a woman singing. This performance shows how amazing she is. Always wanted to see Chastain live.
Leather is one of the best metal vocalists of all time. Can't believe she is not more famous. Stoked for her new album.
One of the most underrated Bands: Chastain with Leather's-Vocals; what a powerful voice
Chastain ruled in the 80's! Thanks for sharing.
Leather could strip the paint of the woodwork with that voice, one of my favourite singers of all time.
Love it!!!!
No chick had a voice as powerful as Leather Leone

Couldn't agree more \,,/ David wasn't promoted enough but every metalhead with an ear knows him. One of best shredders ever though!
plus his tone is slicker than grease
