Great conversation, would love to hear more ultra-specifc content as the pro level racing stuff is talked already a lot about. I think in the ultra world there is so much more to unveil and less science available. Therefore real stories like in this talk become an important part to progress and learn something :-)
Excellent video, Lots of good advice, I’m training for a 1000+ mile endurance race (unsupported). I’ve added in more long distance rides but my FTP has gone down. It’s really hard to get the balance of intensity and endurance and they specified how important it is to improve your vo2 and ftp at the same time as your endurance. I’ve always concentrated on intensity over endurance being an old athlete. These ultra events are becoming more popular and are replacing the old 24 hr Mtb events such as Mountain mayhem and 24/12 both which I raced.
Ask John next time about working with Jeroen Swart who now works for UAE, about a study he did regarding the effects of Ritalin (Methyl-amphetamines) on Elite performance.

I think you're confusing Instagram-trendy with actual popularity. Badlands has, what, 200-300 participants each year? It and similar events are definitely social media darlings along with everything gravel at the moment, but they're hardly representative of the average amateur rider's event calendar for the year. Traiinng for a 700km race is of marginal relevance to 99% of your audience.
