when i had my very first lesson at university after never having private lessons before, this was one of the first things my professor taught me. i'm actually pretty surprised that this isn't more widely embraced as the point-blank answer to posture on the flute because it just makes so much sense -- I was really confused whenever I saw *professionals* play with such a slouched posture having the flute pointed down. I'm so glad youve made a video about this!

Guess being in marching band helped with posture 😎 Also that good posture opens your body giving your lungs space to expand! (I’m in choir too 😂)
EDIT: MY MOM JUST SURPRISED ME WITH A FLUTE OMG IM SO EXCITED it’s a Gemeinhardt 2Sp 😭😭😭😭😭😭

Jayden Mazza it’s going great thanks for asking!!! I know all the basics and can read well, although playing has become hard because I have an unknown illness that restricts me from breathing well (which is really important for flute hahah) but I love it ❤️

I've come back into flute playing after a few years of doing figure skating and ballet and I've found the figure skating posture really has helped me open up my chest. You can really access your entire lungs that way and the weight of the flute isn't just on your arms.

    • @NatashaEstrada
      @NatashaEstrada 5 років тому +2

I should add something I learned from getting my shoulders back as a skater. You have to be emotionally ready. Opening your chest up can feel very vulnerable and exposed. When you pull your shoulder back in a way there is nothing left to "protect" you. Your saying. I am here.

Excellent analysis! Not only did I learn new postures to experiment with on my flute but I also learned from how you approached the problem. I especially appreciated your analysis of the muscle functions. Your attitude toward learning as discovery is an inspiration.

Every masterclass I have ever been to, they always talk about posture. They always want you to open up, it also helps with your quieter softer sound.

Johanna, I can't say how much I've learned from you. I was a sax player who had an unfortunate event happened to where I don't want to pursue music as a profession, but my love for flute never will die! Everything I know about it is thanks to you, and I'm actually going to trial flutes through the FCNY! All of this is because I stumbled on your "I hated practicing technique" video, and I'm so glad that I did.
May your channel kindle and warm the fire for the flute of others as it did me!

As always I really appreciate your attention to detail and physicality and improvement. Thanks so much for sharing! Personally, I think I indirectly learned this posture from marching band but I still have a lot of trouble going between c and d. I’m considering getting a thumb port for this... I do have very short thumbs

Hi, thanks for this video ! I am going through this exact same discovery since a few weeks, although I am a tall guy with quite big hands. This tells me that what actually blocks us is NOT being short or tall, it is the STORIES we tell ourselves, that being short or tall would be an obstacle ! We let sneak in the idea that we have to live with the "non-reachable"comfort instead of solving it !
I am 50, and play the flute since I was 10. It is never too late ! 😄

It's great to hear you talk about your discoveries in this way. I picked up basic ergonomics and practice patterns in Guitar Craft around 2007 when I was briefly part of a small group doing that sort of thing. Also long practiced in Chinese martial arts, the health aspect key, and Qigong. Holding any instrument or tool or dong anything physical at all these days has my Tai Ji training behind it, where the basic element is doing the exercises to train clear sense of whole body power, whole body mind, which if you take it far enough goes into sense of subtle energy currents, the very real energies worked in Qigong, Also I came to concert flute with meditation training in droning tones and mantras, while I had basic skill in two octaves on bamboo flute well trained. I still have to dial in specifics, like if I don't use my right pinky to hold down the D# key when I do lots of playing around in the left hand positions I sometimes unintentionally push the right trill key with my ring finger slightly, uprooting whatever note I intended to play. Then training my pinky to be able to walk around on the three keys available to the right one without uprooting the ring finger key. Droning the tones, the Trevor Wye thing, glad I got the Tone book cause it has patterns that help me apply my learning to the specifics of the flute. One of your vids introduced him to me, thanks for doing this. I wonder if there's a way to make basic exercise interesting enough to appeal to young musicians. Learning bad habits as a young bassist and guitarist and singer I had to re learn how to do those things in my late 30's and early 40's to be able to play with good posture and relaxed pose. Guitar always on a strap, I should not have to hold it with my hands to play it. Robert Fripp is a great teacher of the basics. It's skill in the basics that allows him to fluently play guitars with anybody. Glad I'm coming to the flute with the basics already trained. Makes all the other complexities easier to learn.

Posture is a big thing ! For me, Exercise is the next target for improvement: self-esteem is important on posture too. With the baroque or classical flute, weight isn't really a problem but when I change to the "Modern" flute, the extra weight of it unbalances me and my support and posture go away ... AMAZING how such a small thing can unbalance us!

I recently realised the differences in my posture while playing the piccolo. Since then I try to concentrate on having that same goog posture while playing my normal flute.

@Joanne, yes!! I think this is exactly what I need to do. I am going to attempt this. I think it might eradicate all the tension and pain I've experienced in my left shoulder and in my left upper arm. Actually, some days its the whole of my left and sometomes my back too.
I hope this sorts it. I do love coming back to the flute again after 30 years and learning from scratch is sooo worth it😅

I have been struggling with my shoulders while playing... I had some help with posture and stuff but the person who helped me doesn’t know anything about fluteplaying so, I kinda have to find a good posture while playing. This video can actually help me!! So hopefully I will get a little bit better!! Thank you so much for making videos like these!!

    Yeah, posture can be difficult.
I have Fibromyalgia, and when I am practicing my Flute, and the pain in my back and sides kicks in, keeping a decent posture can be difficult.
Plus, I tend to tense up a lot in the shoulders too...

Hey Joanna, do you have any advice or tips for people who have stopped playing the flute for a few years and are trying to get back into it? I played all through school and didn't go to college right away since I didn't know what I wanted to do. I also stopped practicing eventually. I've picked up my flute and done basic warmups recently a few times (long tones, scale exercises, whatever I had in my old warmup book). I'm also going to sign up for private lessons but I'm super scared and nervous because my sound and technique have deteriorated so much. I'm kind of embarrassed about it but I also really want to get back into playing and go back to school.

I picked up my flute again after not playing for 45 years. The secret is to get a kind teacher, preferably one with a lot of experience. Teachers get a lot of students coming back after a hiatus. They're used to it.

Hi Joanna, Do you still use the cork extension for the left index finger which you mentioned in How I Customized my flute. I noticed that it was not showing in this video and was wondering if you revised your thoughts on that.

I know you probably get a lot of requests so mine will probably get lost in the sea of them, but would you ever consider do a review of a wooden headjoint. I know on some flute headjoints you can get a wooden lip plate or entire joint made of wood. It would be interesting to see a professional review of it.

That is so funny... I never noticed that you even had poor posture, until you just mentioned it in this video! You'll probably notice that you don't need the finger extensions, with the correct posture!? Something to keep looking for in your upcoming vids!!! I naturally play like I have a pole stuck up my... No! My back, you sicko!!! LOL!!! Anyway... I had band director after band director practically throw their baton at me and beat me into the proper posture. I don't know why... I didn't get to play in marching band (even though the class was supposed to be a marching band class, that the band director didn't want to have to do.) where it's mandatory... I think that is why when I would switch off my section as a T-Sax player, to my flute whenever my sax would go in for repairs... I would always beat the first chair at down-the-lines, on the spot bar checks... Still cracks me up to hear the band director correcting everyone in the flute section, and here I am not even part of the section, play the piece, and be the only one in the flute section to nail the piece!!! Such a proud moment for me! Sorry to tute my flute there! But you know how it is when you get a standing ovation, you just keep reliving that moment in time or is that just me!?!? LOL!!! Well, I'm glad that you have been able to find your new posture to be such a weight off your chest. You'll probably notice it also take the cramp off the diaphragm.
