Thanks for what you're doing! I hope this helps someone. I was getting killed by rats last year. They were getting into our pantry, workshop, barn steeling eggs from our chicken coop and in the garden. I watched UA-cam, tried homemade bucket traps, ordered fancy bucket traps, snap traps...etc. caught a few but didn't make a dent in the population. Then I came across a safe, homemade poison. Tried it in the pantry. It actually worked. After 3 days no rats in the pantry. I mixed up a bunch of the stuff and started putting it around our property. Within 3 days no rats, rat damage had stopped. I still keep the stuff around the property and we are doing great. Equal parts of sugar, flower or cornmeal, and Plaster of Paris. Dry mix, inside out of the weather I put it in shallow bowls. Outside I make a container from 2 inch PVC pipe with some 90° elbows so water can't get in but the rats can. Nothing glued, tape in a few places but the top piece is just pushed on so I can easily pull it off to add more of the mix. This stuff really works, safe if something else eats the dead rats it won't hurt them. The rats die a slow enough death that they go home to die. So no bad smell for the year I've been doing this. God bless UA-cam solutions! Thanks to UA-cam I was able to keep my old mower working at least 2 years longer.

Came back to this to comment because I tried a natural solution and after just a couple weeks, it worked!! I told my kids (9 and 7) that I would give them a quarter for each ladybug they found and placed on a plant in the garden, and it worked! I’m so happy for the plants, and the kids made a couple bucks 😂

Love these videos!! So helpful as I learn more and more about gardening. Always look forward to tomato Tuesdays. I planted basil around my tomato plants and so far seems to be working to keep pests at bay. I have about a dozen tomato plants that I started from the seeds in a tomato I bought at the grocery store and ate. Did it just for grins and giggles and was stunned that I now have plants loaded with tomatoes!

Reference to non-coated aspirin for your aspirin/water solution: you can use coated aspirins if you add them to a pint of warm tap water, shake the closed container and let sit for about an hour. The aspirin powder will break through the coating skin and the skins will float to the top. Remove the skins with a spoon, then add this solution to the remainder of the one gallon of water.

    • @kirkberryleo3307
      @kirkberryleo3307 3 роки тому +7

I use a mortar and pestle, grind the aspirin and then a fine strainer completely takes out the coating

Hello, I have a very small garden, in containers. I have 5 large tomato plants all about 5 feet tall and one small one planted very late. I started lossing foliage on them. I found some 4 & 5 inch long hornworms and that was it. A couple days later I found more of their droppings and found another 4 inch long worm I watched your video and ordered a blacklight flash light like you talked about.. I found 9 worms on 5 of the plants tonight (8-28-21). They were in size a half inch to 2.5 inches long. Thank you for this information IT DOES work! I'll go hunting tomorrow night too!!!

I'm looking forward to planting more varieties this year and having a bounty simply to enjoy, some for canning, and extra for sharing. Last year I had blossom end rot on my tomatoes early on and the leaf mold on my zuchinni at the end of the season. It's good to be armed in advance with knowledge on how to prevent these issues organically... and now I feel confident to have a slightly bigger garden that will be successful. It's very exciting for me! (Just waiting for frost date to pass, now.)

Thanks for the great videos and the effort that you put into them. The best advice was about the black light. I went to the pet store and bought one sold for pet urine detection since I saw evidence of the hornworms but couldn't see them. I didn't want to wait for Amazon delivery so that is an option for those who may be impatient like I was. So far it has detected at least 5 critters before they did very much damage since I was able to find some small ones as well as a big one. I've never heard of this before so I am very thankful you mentioned it. Keep up the great work and thanks again for helping save my tomato plants!

Great info Brian. Made a note of all the sprays. Received my Neptune’s Harvest tomato & vegetable food yesterday. I have been catching rats because they are attracted to my chicken coops. I have used all sorts of traps. Found the best way to catch them is with a trap called a Ratinator. I bait it with chicken scratch. The traps are expensive but effective. Plus no snap traps to get your fingers in...not that I’ve ever done that. 😊🤣 One tip if you use a ratinator is to put a clip on the entry area before using the basin. Otherwise those smart rats will escape as you are carrying the trap to the basin.

Thank you for this video. I noticed small dark beetles on my tomato plants so I started googling tomato pests. I found your video and when you mentioned worm droppings, I went back outside armed with a magnifying glass and realized that those weren't beetles, rather poop. I could see that something was eating the outer stem. I couldn't find the worm (this plant does not have a lot of foliage, but it still wasn't visible). Thanks for your tip of checking for it at night, I came out armed with a flashlight and found a brown worm thingie.

Hi Bryan, when I bought my house in country, it was infested with mice and rats. tried traps, but expensive. wouldn't touch the bloody mess after each and after going through a lot, called pest control that uses poison traps spread around the property, toxic to humans and pets. worried the toxic washout after rains going into my well; told only remedy was a CAT, which i got. now no rodents, no snakes, rabbits, bugs, birds in house. An allergy test showed I was allergic to CATS. Never knew because he sleeps on my bed at night, close by, great companion, loves to accompany me to the garden(Catmint plant there)and best companion and friend. Never experience any allergies symptoms except occasional sneezing. He is well worth it.

Im growing toms in pots, and we were gettn hit by dome squirrels, and the fruit isnt even ready yet! They’ve been digging into the soil for stash spots of their food caches. For now, to remedy this problem, all i did was buy some 1/2”x1/2” hardware cloth and cut out two half circles, that when put to gether on top of the soil, covers the entire diameter of the pot. I cut out a sectionto allow the trunks to be free and clear of the hardware cloth by an inch or two. If and when the time comes, i may have to just cage them, to keep the birds and rodents away. I’ll try using other methods before i do that, tho. Thanks for sharing all that useful info. Aloha

I just began growing tomato plants this year and I have been having a difficult time. I wish I would have seen this sooner, but at least for next year I'll know what to look for and how to treat it thank you. Those cutworms oh my gosh they have been a headache. So far I have not had problems with rodents or squirrels either, but I'm guessing maybe the cats in my area or the snake garden is helping. I just saw a snake garden today. I just scared it off since it was near where I planted my green onions.

Thanks for all the great advice! I'd just like to add that it is important to see that the mouse or rat is dead in the trap before disposing of it.Smashing the head with something substantial and heavy would make it unconscious immediately. I'm also concerned about sticky traps where the animal runs on and can't get off. Just throwing it away causes much pain and fear for a long time before it dies.

I noted what you said about squirrels & you are lucky. They are a big problem for me. I have seen squirrels running across my yard with a tomato in their mouth or sitting up in a tree eating a tomato that they stole. They don't seem to be as fond of my bell peppers, but occasionally they nab those too. I catch them in live traps & release them 5 miles or more away. So, there are now less squirrels. What I find is that I trap a lot of squirrels (& chipmunks) early in the season & after about a month or 2, things really slow down or stop. What squirrels & chipmunks that may still around seem to get wise to the traps & they just avoid my garden altogether. It has been over a month since I last trapped a squirrel or chipmunk. I just leave my 2 traps in front of my garden even if they are not baited or open. They seem to serve as somewhat of a deterrent just by being present. For the last 3 weeks I have only been baiting & setting my traps about once per week & as I mentioned, I have not trapped a thing in over a month. It is a good idea to close your traps at night unless you want to go out in the morning & find a skunk in your trap! I had 1 skunk walk into my open trap that wasn't even baited. This is a very good video & I have used the Hydrogen Peroxide Mix, Baking Soda/Aspirin Mix & Neem Oil Mix with great success.

Wow! Thanks for all the great tips, I had no idea that powdery mildew was prevented by spraying neem oil! I have been wondering why I haven't seen any signs, because it is so prevalent here, but I spray neem oil to prevent insects. Haha, a 2 in 1!

Great video! I've also been plagued with rats but have managed to get them controlled with plenty of traps as you suggested. A bigger problem is that I've been fighting spider mites on my tomatoes for 3 seasons now. Tried Neem and other organic sprays, beneficial insects, diatomaceous earth all with minimal success for a period of time but the spider mites always seem to win in the end and can take a whole crop out. Suggestions?

Did u ever end up finding something to remedy those spider mites? I know that weed growers are often inundated w/them, so if there is a hydrponics store somewhere, or go online, im sure that they have stuff for it. I know they do.

Thank you for the blacklight trick. Didn't know they came out at night. We would see a few in the morning kill them but still something was stripping the leaves. Went out last night with a black light and the tomato plants lit up. Snipped them into with pruning shears. Thanks, Also order the Monterey B.T. The damage is pretty bad already, plus the heat in South Texas seems to not be good for tomato plants. They do not produce very good and when they do the tomatoes are stunted.

Hi thank you very much, I have just noticed aphids, a tiny spider and I found a tiny green worm!!!! Please tell me how to get rid of the aphids. I’m a beginner at gardening, I watched your videos and learned lots, thank you. I only have two tomatoes plants, I want to succeed so I can get more. Thank you very much 👍🏻

Thanks for your video! I. Pretty sure my tomatoes have the black spot or blight. There's so so much care for tomatoes that I didn't realize I would need to do.
CAN I STILL EAT THE TOMATOES FROM THE INFECTED PLANT? I believe I have a total of 6 green tomatoes I've picked this far that were very low hanging. So I went ahead and picked most of those and clipped off some more lower branches. I applied the peroxide mixture at the same time.

I get what I think are spider mites all over my tomatoes (and some of my pole beans as well) and they leave little black specks all over my plants with small webbing on the leaves and they basically turn them into lace and eventually kill the plant. What can I do? They got my potato plants one time as well. So frustrating! I never really know what plant they’re going to get until I see those signs.

I am new to gardening and have started growing tomatoes amongst other basic veges. There seems to be something making small holes in my tomatoes. I though they were burrowing in but when I cut them open there’s nothing there. Would you have any idea what that could be? I am in Australia so I don’t know if we get any different bugs than you. On another note, thanks for all your videos, they’ve given me so much information for starting my garden and growing my vegetables. You explain things very clearly and you’re the first place I go for tips when I’m wanting to plant something new.

Question.... If I do drop irrigation, how is it done?, How long should it run?, Should it run daily?
I want to learn about it because I am older and cannot get out every day and water. Plus I put down ground cloth for weeds so I don't have to pull weeds and I am going to put down mulch in top of the cloth.
    Thanks 😊

Wow! Great info. Thank you. I thought potato bugs were small beetles. That’s one bug I wouldn’t care to meet. Do they attack potatoes as the name implies? How do you cause them to feel unhappy in your garden? Please talk more about determinate tomato varieties and how best to grow them? My space is limited. Thank you so much. I’m really learning a lot. Take care, stay safe. Blessings

After having a whole crop of plants devoured by deers who would top them thereby killing the plant's ability to keep growing eventually killing them I decided last year to try the netting sold by tractor supply only about 15 bucks and it done the trick. It also helped keep the rabbits out that were eating other plants so I swear by it now. I used bamboo to wrap netting around to avoid having to buy posts. I was lucky to have them in the woods growing but people are often happy to have them removed since they can take over
