  • Deluge USB MIDI Testing
Today I'm finally able to start playing with USB MIDI on the Synthstrom Deluge! After learning that the Deluge could act as a USB MIDI host, I knew I had to give it a shot, because it would open up a lot of different possibilities for the channel! After a few weeks of waiting, the power supply and adapters that I needed are finally here, and it's time to get to work. Stay tuned for some MPE content in the near future as well! Enjoy the video :)

Hey FreeBeat, love the content as per usual! I believe as long as the Deluge has 9V power when booting, it will correctly detect USB devices as they power on and off. If 9V power is disconnected, Deluge has to be powered off and back on with 9V connected before it will detect USB devices again.
Keep churning out the tunes; can't wait for the next live show!!

It seems that Deluge recognize USB midi devices during boot sequence, so power off / on was necessary in this case. Cheers (BTW very inspired channel)

Deluge should be powered as last device and it will briefly show 'MIDI' on the display to show that it has recognised a midi device on the USB.

Yeah. This has bit me. The Deluge needs to be turned on last.
Also with some usb devices, I find I need to tweak how much the velocity modulates patches so that the sounds don’t clip

did not know that you could connect cables this way for midi transfer. Very helpful. Thank you.

Great video. Currently building a midi controller with Arudino Leonardo and curious if I can use it with a synth that can be used as a MIDI host.

Great stuff. The mapping etc was a bit swift but I was on a small screen. I'll watch again when I get my gear out. Cheers. Lee

If I ever find the funds for the Deluge I can totally enjoy it with a Novation Launchpad Pro Mk3 next to it and jam away. Thanks for testing!

A battery powered usb midi keyboard like the AKAI LPK25 wireless, enables usb midi without external power to the deluge!

Invest in a couple of CME WidiMaster or Yamaha Bluetooth adapters for wireless connectivity over BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy)

I have an odd situation with SUB37 recording midi in/out. The SUB37 gets stuck on some ghost note from the Deluge. Also, some odd program change happens and I don’t know why. Appreciate any feedback or similar experiences.

Idea for a video (maybe you did already), connect midi out to midi in, use a midi track to control 2,3,4... synth tracks at once.

I found that Pitchbend was disabled from the KeyStep 37 when using USB MIDI but worked fine over 5-Pin MIDI... then I went in to the Settings>MIDI>Device> and selected ArturiaKeyStep37 instead of DIN whie the KeyStep 37 was USB Host plugged to the Deluge... then the Pitch Bend worked... Imagine it will be much the same with any MPE device over USB... Just in case somebody else finds a similar problem... and thinks... hey this should work. It does but you gotta tell it to work.

Hi Mr Freebeat, what mixer do you use? I'm curious as I'm planning on purchasing one, thanks

I use the Zoom Livetrak L-12 (it's linked in the description), but it might be a bit overkill if you're not a content creator and don't need the built in recorder/routing options.
