    Keeping your wipers up isn't good idea. Springs are getting stretched, and stretched springs looses strenght. This may cause your wipers won't work properly. Better idea is to put a cardboard under the wipers and put plastic bags on the wipers. Simple, effective and safe. Sorry for poor english ;) Greetings from Poland.

    it's not just an extra 10 minutes when it snows like every 2-3 times a week during the winter over the course of 3-4 months. your method is probably more like an extra 15-20 mins. if you gotta be somewhere you can't be dicking around with snowblowers and getting all cute. I don't know man it's a catch 22... I'm pretty sure they make scratch free snow brushes.

      My neighbor just did this to her Golf. I cringed so bad and died a little inside. The whole car, the bumpers, everything she scrapes the shit out of it. I scraped very carefully to divide the panels in sections so they slide off by gravity. I didn't do this because I was pussy btw, it's just a car to me, a tool. But I want to avoid scratches as much as I could that can turn into expensive rust afterwards.

    In this situation with a ton of snow your are removing in warmer temperatures when the snow is heavy and sticky, the best option is a car cover. As for the rest of us, just use a basic snow brush like this one www.amazon.com/Mallory-532-Integrated-Scraper-Handle/dp/B000BPLNXC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1537185525&sr=8-3&keywords=snow+brush. ALWAYS bring the brush inside the house when you leave the car and keep it near the door so you grab it when you leave, you'll understand why. Also, NEVER turn on the wipers with heavy snow or ice on the windshield - make sure they are off before turning the key. And never open a window when there's ice on it (this single biggest mistake costs many people a nice window rail or motor repair). Finally, always be very careful when using the ice scrapper on windshield and windows - rubber and plastic trims around the glasses always get damaged from this.

      His technique is pretty much impossible in some cases. Just like today, parked in a parking lot, went to work, came back with lots of snow on the car. I cant just karate chop the snow and lift it, eventually I'll have to swipe it away. You know, since I don't carry a freakin leaf blower in my car.

    For snow removal I use the metal brush from the bbq. Come spring, I then buff out the gouges🙂
    For removing ice off the windows, I pour boiling hot water on the glass. Works like a charm. Come spring, yup I replace all the cracked glass. My way of thinking is if I replace the glass every spring, I never have to worry about pitting. 🤔
    Im so fxking smart! 😋

  • @sunnysolana

    If you have a regular car, an ice scraper with a brush on the other end is perfectly fine. I've had my van for carrying my dogs for 11 years now. No scratches can be seen anywhere on the car from clearing the snow. If you have an expensive car, then park it in a garage. If you can't afford a garage, then you can't afford an expensive liability.

    The wiper tip is a bad one though. Keeping them up like this will loosen the spring, making them lose effectiveness. And if freezing rain gets the spring all frozen up, you'll have no wiper until it gets back to over 32F.
    So this very common practice is in fact dangerous. Solution? When the defroster finally gets you windshield hot, they should loosen from ice. Then just raise them and hit them with a stick to break the ice.

    • @Sinehmatic
      @Sinehmatic 6 років тому +8

      Just get a snowbrush. Maybe you can find a delicate one that has less of a chance at scuffing your clear coat. If it snows more than 4x a year, you're not going to save time using these methods vs. just using a snowbrush a fixing your paint once post winter. I would have spent more time cleaning the snow off my car than the length of my post winter paint care within the first two weeks of winter using these methods.
      It may work for some if you RARELY see snow or rarely need to clean snow off your car.

    • @bronney

  • @myroadtours6147
    @myroadtours6147 5 років тому

    I get what you're saying but this would take me all day to clean the snow off. My first step is to set the vehicles defrosters and heating controls prior to any potential snow/ice storms. Then the following morning, I remote start the vehicle for 20 minutes from inside the house...vehicle shuts off every 10 minutes and only allows me to remote start it twice. This is legal in the State of Colorado and people should check their laws first before doing so. Then after 20 minutes, I use a yard broom that I have rapped up all the metal screws and brackets with duct tape...I'm gonna plasti dip and tape one for next season. I'm able to fully clear off the snow from my Outback in just a matter of minutes and with ease. Granted, the bristles as well as parts of the rapped handle etc does touch the vehicle. This vehicle is my aka snowmobile and is mostly used in the winter, ever run winter tires year round. I wouldn't do to my G63 for example. I've only done this one season and haven't noticed any scratches. Leaf blowers are fun but takes longer and isn't as effective on the snow we see.

  • @HansP0203
    @HansP0203 6 років тому +7

    This is only useful if you live in an environment with high air pollution or where the temperature drops below -30c.
    Snow and ice always have a smal layer of water(until -30c) your car being made of metal conducts heat and cold really well even with paint on and forms a tiny layer of water underneath the snow and ice, so use a snow brush designed for snow as the material is softer than paint and wont scratch up your car. The same goes for your windscreen, a plastic scraper isn't hard enough to gauge your windscreen , there are a few made of metal but you should stay away from those at all cost. Given enough force(mass + velocity) even softer materials can damage harder materials, but for this purpose its theoretical impossible.

    Is he serious?! 🤔 Who would have that much time every morning before work to remove the snow that way?! It would take an hour each morning if you live in a country that has a lot of snow during winter months.

    Fuck that, I’m going to use my broom. I don’t have time for that. Don’t like snow don’t park outside. Or don’t drive the car you like when it’s winter.

    Yeah I can see doing this on a nice car. On the family suv I'm gonna use something soft and touch the car with it. (FWIW, I garage my cars and have a cover for one that can't fit)

    A bit much if you don't have a clear bra or wrap on your car you will get more damage from driving then you would using a normal snow scraper. And if you even attempt to use a shovel to remove snow you deserve scratches.

    snowed today in Michigan and I brushed it off with a broom, but not hard
    Does that count?
    Glad for the upload though!

    Larry, great video as usual. Your advice has been super helpful for me and my family's cars. Do a video on how to wash a car with very little water, ie in South Africa or another place with water constraints. I would love to hear your method for doing this. Cheers.

    If you live in a snow area use a tarp or cover for your vehicle outside it saves on cleaning your car before you go to work or somewhere... And you do not have to clean ice or snow off windows if use it...

    If you can afford a nice enough car to take really good care of like this, get a garage. If not, get a cover, clean the snow off of it, then take it off. No way to do this every day during winter.

    Considering this channel is in NYC. You can't do most of that in that city. Salt on the street, no space to have a leaf blower and all that.

    Quick question Larry,
    I have a problem with the front of my windscreen fogging up. It seems to be a constant build up of moisture on the inside. Is there something I can do to prevent this?

    You could also wrap some MF towel's around the leaf blower to stop the plastic tube hitting the paint work.

    Sorry but these techniques are not realistic... and someone who let car outside in winter so that it accumulate so much snow, for sure don't care much about paint scratches.
