As others said, they were in the Japanese version (Called Gryzor, but later they started calling them Contra in Japan too) only, plenty of other things got cut too (Such as how in Level 1, the trees in the background swayed in the wind, that didn't happen in the US version). Most likely in an effort to make the game cheaper to produce. The US and UK versions are half the size of the Japanese version. This is an English fan-translation of the original Japanese version.

I grew up with Probotector, EU PAL ver. It is a bit slower in tempo and nothing can take that away.
However you did a fantastic remake of Contra.
