      Thank you Debbie! This seems to be a big concern for many skaters new or seasoned. I'm sure you have gotten quite a few comments and messages yourself on your channel, which is amazing by the way!

    This video was awesome--just what I needed to hear. If I look at where I was four years ago and where I am now, it's light years in difference even though it's not where I thought I'd be...but it is where I need to be. You are helping me reach my childhood dream of being a roller skater. I love your tutorials and watch them almost every day to help myself get better.
    I grew up in a rural area with no access to lessons or information, but my dream of being a roller skater never died. As an adult (45 now), and after four years of dinking around on my skates in the parking lot near my house, I am living my dream, I just found a great coach and am setting small goals for myself each month.

      @@appelusa so much, I got on my skates again tonight, going to commit to 3 days a week minimum, working on 1 or drills each time😊 can you give me some advice on not feeling like Bambi on ice for the first 10 minutes or so of getting my skates on? I’m skating outside 100% of the time and getting to my smooth spot is a challenge.

    • @appelusa
      @appelusa  4 роки тому

      @@shannonsemanas9761 That sounds like a good plan! Just warm up doing normal forward skating and drill very beginner level basics like safety position, stopping, balance on 1 foot standing still and maybe rolling. If rolling balancing is difficult try 3 seconds only each foot working your way up. I also like scooter pushes as a warm up. I don't know where you're at level wise so my first answer would be just skate forward normal pushing side to side and keep your weight forward and keep your knees bent:) Happy Skating!!!

    I just want to add to this discussion that I think that doing progression type exercises is a great way to overcome fear because you're working up to something difficult in a safe way (beginner 2 foot turns working up to advanced etc.). Some things that we do on skates can be pretty dangerous if we're not 'up to' them. I find that I have to be really mindful of exactly where my weight is as I practice things like downtown that have me crossing skates in front and behind. It is easy to get tangled up if I don't have a well-practiced sense of exactly where I'm going next. Falls also become a LOT more consequential the heavier we are and the older we are. I had an ankle just snap on me while I was off balance and trying to catch myself almost a year ago now. Since then, I've been focused on A) losing weight to reduce torque, (also taking a lot of vitamin D) and B) making sure I know where I need to be with my weight as I transfer. Some of the well considered tips you offer in your videos are incredibly helpful when it comes to that! I really love skating, but after that accident, I'm dealing with a lot of fear partly by trying to be really smart about how I work at this.

      @@appelusa Well, these days I'm doing a lot of hiking, and reducing the amount of more difficult stuff I'm attempting on skates. Just keeping it very simple for now. Your friend Dirty Deborah Harry just had a great discussion about not chasing tricks that resonated with me at my stage of this. I think you in particular offer some of the best and safest skating instruction I've received, along with the instructor at my local rink! Between the three of you (and all of the great people that enjoy this sport at my rink), you've helped me a lot! Thank you for checking back with me!

  • @mirpandaranda
    @mirpandaranda 3 роки тому

    Ugh. I needed this pep talk. I recently began my journey to re-learn how to rollerskate, which to be honest is LEARN to rollerskate cuz as a kid i was just in rinks all the time. Who needs to learn how to stop when you have a wall to slide up to? I feel like i'm progressing really well for a middle aged woman who lives in the middle of nowhere on gravel roads: i have to drive to town to trail skate or practice in my upstairs linoleum floored room. It's not easy to just get out and practice. And dude the FEAR. I was starting to feel really strong on my skates. Putting in miles. My last trail skate was 6.5 miles and i felt great about it, but decided i needed new wheels because the stock wheels were NOT helping me navigate crappy terrain. So i got some Atom Pulses and woah daddy they sure roll over anything. But t hey;re FAST! It's much easier to roll over debris.... but easier to roll in general. I got super scared with a tailwind and slight down grade and panicked. "i can't stop! i don't know how to regain control!' that panic obviously made me tense up and my body wasn't able to do what i needed it to do. i KNOW how to transition and turnaround toe stop.... but i can never get myself to actually try it when i have any speed, aka when i NEED to do it cuz i'm so freaked out! At some point on this last skate i hit a pebble and fell on my ass and elbow. Falling as a grownup is not fun. at all. It's just incredible to me how i can build build build confidence and feel great and ready to skate..... and then just lose all that confidence in 5 minutes and feel like a brand new beginner all over again.
    A. i need to practice slowing down and stopping more, out in the real world (increasingly difficult here in rainy oregon)
    B. i need to stop mind f***ng myself.
    C. Thanks for this post. And if you have any pointers on how to help me slow down and feel more in control when on unexpected terrain on these massive 65mm wheels, i'd love it :)
    - Miranda (39) in Oregon, about 3 months into my adult re-learning adventure.

    • @appelusa
      @appelusa  3 роки тому +1

      Miranda!! We are the same age! At least for 4 more days 😳😱
      I think so many have the same experience. And with outdoor skating that pebble can take even the seasoned skater out. I recommend starting back with gradual stopping methods, even all of them, and work your way to faster and faster speeds, honestly it’s all about drilling them so they are in your muscle memory. drill them on your miles. Start with what’s comfortable, do a body check, make sure alignment is right, then add just a bit more speed. Then a bit more. And keep drilling. You’ll get there- look how far you’ve come! You wear protective gear ya?

    • @mirpandaranda
      @mirpandaranda 3 роки тому

      @@appelusa oh definitely. I even wear my gear when practicing in the house just in case I fall and hit me head on a door jam. Why yes I did that.
      Thanks.
      Do you feel like a plow stop.is the best strategy to slowing or stopping? The turnaround toe stop is obv awesome but aforementioned nerves. I think I just need to remember to squat lower all the time. If nothing else if I fall I'll already be closer to the ground. Ha

    • @appelusa
      @appelusa  3 роки тому

      @@mirpandaranda I don’t think a snow plow is great for big hills- I use it to slow down on flat terrain. I would use toe stop forward. Or slolam.

    • @mirpandaranda
      @mirpandaranda 3 роки тому

      @@appelusa ya I love a slolam for a wide path but some paths are just too narrow. And I should say this was NOT a big hill. It was the tiniest imperceptible slope that felt too fast on my new big wheels. Ha.

    Well this is a weird comment: I'm a figure artist interested in doing some skating inspired compositions. I came to this channel thinking I'd just learn about the body mechanics of a roller skater and maybe a few hints of what's going on in the mind of a skater. If I replace skate with drawing or painting and this video totally applies to me. Especially the confidence and goal setting, it's so easy to get in my head and lose momentum towards my goals. Never hurts to be reminded to assess and encourage myself. Anyways, thanks for tutorials even though I'm not exactly learning to skate :)

    Fear literally paralyzes me. If it were as easy as "being in charge of my confidence"... surely I would know what confidence is by now :( I've put on my skates every week for months, I even managed to actually move and skate a few times so I know I can. But somehow... I can't. I freeze repeatedly. I gear up, put on the skates and just stand there unable to move which makes me feel like an absolute failure. It's a terrible feeling so if it were just a matter of choice, I'd rather not.

      Hi Julia. I’m sorry to hear about the fear that you’re experiencing. Do you have a rink or skating coach near you? I would highly recommend seeing someone in person. I have worked with so many adults who were experiencing similar and starting from baby steps on carpet and the true foundations got them through that fear to be able to eventually push side to side and skate. I hope you can get some in person lessons and get through that fear as well 🙏🏻

    • @appelusa
      @appelusa  4 роки тому +1

      Hi! Great question! Depends on what you're working on and plan to achieve skill-wise. But generally some intermediate skills such as forward crossovers, backward skating, beginner two foot spin should be accessible within a 4-6 weeks if practicing once to twice a week. Fear has a lot to do with how fast one progresses as discussed in the video. Some advanced skills such as backwards crosses, 180-360 jump, heel toe spin, and transitions may be accessible after a few months to a year of practicing them regularly.
