  • In this classic motorcycle workshop video log we catch up with Dave Mitchell (from Mitchell's Classics) and he updates us with the projects he's got on the go in the workshop. The main highlight of the video today is that 1966 Norton Atlas and 1975 Norton Commando are ready to go back to the customers.

Norton sounds great. Seems to be showing a little oil puffing on throttle blip. That happened on my Commando 850 and turned out to be failed valve guide seals (initially left side but both were brittle and cracking when I took them off). Replace with modern Viton rubber seals from KibbleWhite. Cured the smoking.

Fantastic update. I appreciate Dave's insight towards a single vs. twin carburretor set-up and the practical aspect of running the single. And good questions from Alex that help clarify some of topics for those of us with less mechanical knowledge.

These workshop videos are brilliant. So much information in each one and a variety of bikes. The editing is top too!

Shame he didn’t let Dave do a single carb conversion on the Norton, reliable and smooth over 2% extra performance any day! Thanks for another great video! Can’t help with the crank my dad is currently doing a zb engine but we’re running low on surplus parts ourselves now. Best wishes

Thanks Dave, love the workshop videos. If I lived close I'm sure I'd make a nuisance of myself with questions like, what do you think about this? what do you think about that? The simple chain advice was good, it's handy to see what slack there should be on the main stand, I normally have to ask my partner to sit on the bike while I check it, that's if she's around.

Great content as usual, thank you. Single carb conversation? Good advice in my opinion. You mention you tested the Royal Enfield Scram - do you have a link to see that please?

Hi Roger, we will have a video on that on our main channel, but we haven’t edited it just yet. Reckon we’ll have it done over the next week or so

Shame they put a single Mikuni on a 72 Norton. I'm assuming it's a Combat if it's a 72. 10 to 1 compression, hot cam, 32 mm carbs as opposed to 30 mm on other Commandos. They sound terrible without the twin Amals and the performance really drops off with the Mikuni. Learn how to tune the dual carbs is preferred. It's like Usain Bolt running the 100 with a 100 lb backpack on.

The 72 sounds terrible and can't idle at all with that lumpy Mikuni. Shame, I guess I'm too much of a perfectionist.
