    I'm here with a zero hole argument, on the suggestion that a hole denotes the removal of material to create a vacant space.
    Doughnuts have a hole because an opening is formed inside of a previously solid object.
    When a straw is extruded in manufacture, the material is formed around the empty space, therefore I'd say a straw has no holes, but a channel with two open ends.

    • @viewer-of-content
      @viewer-of-content 3 роки тому +2

      I believe in zero holes for both donut and straw because one is simply a contorted plane through 3d space, and a donut is a cylinder twisted back into itself. Both would only have wholes if hole is defined as a gap between molicules filled with air. A donut only has a hole in its dough stage once puffed its state is transformed. A whole is a vacuous breath in a material that can be filled with another substance, such as air or water, but still remains a whole until the material breatched becomes undistinguishable from the whole.

      @@Kocan7 If you rotate a line like that, then you'd get something that was infinitesimally thin! Uh, nitpicking aside, the T3CHN01200 is using "torus" the sense of the term from topology. Topology is a branch of mathematics which basically collapses geometry down into something which better fits with discrete math, by ignoring the shape entirely. So like, within the context of topology, a donut, straw, a coffee mug (well, the coffee mug's handle), etc. are all toruses (torii?)
      EDIT: I actually watched the video now lol. So yeah, computer science is basically a grab bag of topics from discrete math, and so if you study compsci in college, then you might end up hearing about the whole topology thing. And so computer science graduates with no more than a cursory understanding of topology (such as myself) and who studied for a compsci degree mostly to learn to program rather than to learn actual compsci (I swear not me >.>), will be all "DID YOU KNOW THAT A COFFEE CUP IS BASICALLY THE SAME AS A DONUT I'M SO SMART!?!?!". To say otherwise would be to argue that the hole is a physical part of of the straw when in actuality it's the absence of the straw. So in conclusion nothing has holes and God is dead.

    Topologically, straws have one hole.
    However, the topological definition of "hole" is not the same a the colloqiual definition. (That beach would have zero holes topologically, for example.)
    Nonetheless, any debate about the colloqiual definition is nothing more than semantics, and is irrelevant since it explains nothing more or less about the straw itself.
    Hence this is the answer I'd give:
    Topologically, 1.
    Colloqiually, it is ambiguous and pointless to argue.
    Some argue for the topological definition, others argue that two "entrances" constitute two holes. Neither argument can be "disproven".

    Incorrect. A straw is not a torus. A torus is a 3d object that has only a single surface and no edges. A straw has a clear inside and outside faces and two circular edges.
    A hole by definition goes through something. Meaning it must enter it and exit it. Therefore a straw has only one hole, while a torus has no holes. Because the empty space doesn't enter the torus.

    @drnorrisphd 3 роки тому

    everyone saying you're wrong because "explain when one hole become two" or "openings aren't holes" but the mere fact that there's a debate shows that language is complex. it's like, when would a heap of sand, after removing grains, no longer be a heap. unless you're arguing that they stay a heap until there is no sand, you agree there is some point where it's not a heap, but you could never justify any specif place to become a heap. as for entry isn't hole, well, people use hole to mean entry, and because english doesn't actually have a ruling body over the language, just dictionaries that try to tell you what the speakers are doing with it, as long as you think of them as two entries, and use hole and entry interchangeably, it's two. if you're a pedant who refuses to accept the way others speak, it's one. and the topology argument really starts to beark down when you realize thay hole in common speach doewn't just mean a complete passway in and out through something, but can even just be significant divots. really, there are as many holes in a straw as you want to believe.

    hate it, wormhole theory may have one, two or multiple exits. the straw issue is the same, what if a straw has one entrance and two mouth pieces. i understand that simplicity and a job interview may find enthusiasm from an answer that they agree with, but that does not mean they are right, and worse than that, i am fairly sure that their own AI would hate the singular ideal for such a complex but simple idea. As old Galileo stated, I may admit that i am wrong, and yet i will still be proven correct. i feel terrible for google if that is type of question that they place in the path of any proper theorist that works with AI. They can do better.

      Then you start to realise that most of the "plastic" or "metal" part of the straw is basically one interconnected emptiness, meaning that the straw becomes one massive empty void and there are zero holes.

    Seriously? Have you ever heard of topology? It doesn't matter at all how far the two openings are from each other (they could be on either side of the universe for that matter), how much the tube "twists" in between the two openings, or if the holes have differently shaped perimeters. If it's topologically a torus, it has one hole, no matter how much you dislike that. If we accept you proposition, we basically break mathematics.

    Now, I really dig this channel. But this is just nonsense dancing around definitions. If you are asked this question in an interview, it will be for a job that somewhat requires topological thinking, and then you'll know the answer. If you discuss this with stoned friends at a party, the more fun argument might actually be that the straw has billions of holes, if you consider all the nothingness inside its atoms. What a downer for the party. ;-)

    i concur. the fundamental question at hand should be: if a straw had NO holes, what would it be? if a straw only has one hole, filling it would produce a solid rod of plastic. if a straw has two holes, filling them would produce a hollow tube. I think it's pretty obvious that a hollow tube is much more straw like; thus 2 holes

  • @Beerfazz
    @Beerfazz 3 роки тому

    The one-hole argument by topologists is based on the assumptions that the straw material is without holes itself. Physics disproves this: material is made of atoms, thus a shitton of space in-between these atoms. Atoms are made of elementary particles, which have no spacial extent to begin with. Therefore, it is false to apply topology. Yes, mathematics can be used to *model* the straw material in order to derive a doughnut shape. But the approximations of the model (namely 'straw material is not made of atoms but solid') are based on human arbitraryness, and by the same arbitraryness we can define the word 'hole' in a non-mathematical but useful way and say that a straw has two holes. The reasons why this way is useful are described in the video.

    Linguistics is just as valid a field as topology, and "hole" as a word is only defined by native speaker intuitions/consensus, so there can be multiple correct answers. It's like how there are both mathematical and colloquial definitions of rational, or plane, or set.
    I like this debate not to find who's "right," but so I can see interesting arguments for how everyone justifies their own answer.

    Who ever said that the length was actually a factor? It doesn't matter at all, the shape might actually be more important. But still- it is one hole. So happy to not have to deal with people who think this way.

    • @myau9912

      It does matter, because in order for a tube to have 2 holes, it has to be considered a tube in the first place. By definition, a tube requires length. Every dictionary on the planet proves a straw has 2 holes. Your dismissal of "creative thinking" is actually you just ignoring common sense.

    Your question is predicated on the idea of a hole having a clear definition, which in your explanation you reveal that it does not. So in order to pose the question in the first place, you must clarify the definition of a hole. There could be several definitions which will quite drastically change the correct answer. If a hole is defined as a an opening which leads to somewhere else, then there are two holes since you can enter the straw from either end. If the hole is the space inside the straw, then there is one hole. However, if a hole is simply defined as a circular shape in a substrate through which an object may pass, there are mathematically infinite holes, as the tube represents a series of infinitesimally small and connected holes in a series.

    Although he is obviously wrong, straws mathematically do have only 1 hole, in a way he is also kinda right. Want to understand how the faulty human brain perceives the world? 2 holes may be useful
