In my obviously anecdotal experience from being a squad leader in the Swedish amphibious batallions (akin to a slightly tougher version of the US marines), the M90 camp is indeed highly effective. I remember at one point while on an exercise in the Stockholm archipelago, when I was about 20-30 meters out from shore in our squad boat, with a part of the platoon still ashore, positioned at a rocky outcrop with some sparse lower vegetation of the island we were leaving. Most soldiers we’re standing up in plain view, yet, even though I KNEW that they were there I had difficulty finding some of them at first. They just completely blended in to the greyish background. That’s when I realised that the M90 is a really really good camouflage. Same thing with our camo nets we used to hide boats when shored up and tents while ashore. At one point, we have covered off a larger area (some 30-40 m2 perhaps), with the back against a large bushy section. Again, even though I was standing close (less than 50 meters), I simply couldn’t make out where the bush started and the camo net ended. I do believe those are the nets manufactured by Barracuda and which are sold worldwide.

The "leafpile" nickname actually comes from the fact that the first m90 uniforms used a different fabric that sounded like crunching autumn leaves as soldiers marched.
There was actually another version of the M90 with a very different cut and fit that used the same pattern: The C-stridsdräkt, or "Chemical combat uniform". @@direwolfgaming4905 MTP is good in moorland areas and transitional areas but I get pissed off that people say it covers all areas well. It doesn't - it is a compromise so the UK government could save money by halving the amount of uniforms they had to supply. If UK needs to fight in Europe we'll go back to DPM or something else rather than MTP.
@@justvin7214 I've heard there is a green dominant variation of MTP that is or was supposed to be used in jungle environments, I'd imagine they'd have to roll that out quickly if there was a conflict in Europe, too many countries have used DPM type patterns which can lead to issues like during Gulf war 1 as the Iraqis had a DPM type pattern. Much of the stock has been sold off now too.

Soon there will be plenty M90 since Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark yesterday decided to contract for the new uniform system, delivery starts this year 👍🏻
The m90 is a great pattern. It is distinctly Swedish: over-engineered and highly functional without being flashy. I really hope they keep it, because if something isn't broken, you should 't try to fix it. Most camo patterns seem to be chosen because they look cool, but they are often are too intricate so the pattern blends together to a solid color at distance. Breaking up a silhouette is way more effective than trying to accurately mimic a natural texture. M90 does this perfectly, while still blending well with the swedish natural color palette.
Wow. Just wow. I´m used to people mispronouncing my native tounge. I get it, it´s a small language and it´s somewhat hard for english speakers. But I have to tell you. That was, without a doubt, the worst mispronounciation of a swedish term I have ever heard in my life. I love it! But wow. "Forsvforings foreskins anstalt". I´m still laughing my ass off. Let compromise. At least learn the "Ö" sound, you use it a lot in english anyway. Ö = the E in Jerk (Jörk), or I in Girl (Görl). Then you can go on talking about swedish foreskins all you want!
When doing my military service 1989-90 we got the m/59 and m/58 systems. The officers got the m/90. The m/59 system was 30 years old then. Now the m/90 is 30 years old 😀
When I did military service 80-81 we painted a lot of vehicles with this pattern I remembered it so well that I drew freehand on my friend's Volvo and he filled in with paint. I still like it.
The difference between M59 to M90 are amazing. I think the M90 pattern works great as it totally breaks up the shape of a human. Lets see what the new pattern will be =)
An update about the new, "Nordic Common Uniform": It's now confirmed the M90 pattern will be the camouflage used for the future on Swedish uniforms, but an actual copywrited version of it (very small differences in splinter size as well a few extra details printed on it).
In the Canadian Army, we've been issued some of the SAAB Barracuda Reversible Winter/Arctic Camouflage screens. They're meant for individual soldiers, and one side is all white, with the other side having a grey/white splinter variation.
I have some of this. It’s just a big piece of fabric but it’s very well made. I use it like a picnic blanket on the shooting bench when I go to the range. Much nicer to rest my arms on, and I’m not scared hot brass is going to do much to it.
2:05 not good but i mean it's really REALLY hard for many countries to pronounce it so i'll give you credit for the bravery of trying and cause you made a good video!
I would think the belgium army camo would make a great video as i always found it the nicest camo these days. Also the pre world War one uniforms of the belgains are very interesting
Wow I had no idea that there were 3 versions for different parts of Sweden. When I did my military service 11 years ago I was always pissed of when I got a light colored one because I thought it had been used so much it had gotten washed out. Well then...
I think this is a myth. I think it was a matter of different batches and manufacturers from the beginning. Some of the earliest versions from the late 80's and early 90's had the best and most effective colours, but I doubt there was ever any intentional variation. Some later versions were very strange with bright neon and "poison" green shades. These work very well in bright green summer decidous forest or tropical jungle though.
The splinter camo will not be replaced, and I've never heard anyone say that they want a new camo pattern. It's extremely effective up here. The new camo pattern will look the same, but copyrighted. And it will be worn on our version of the NCU system
As far as i know there are no rules. They say that it needs to look well groomed and that the gasmask fits, but i've seen people with longer beards then torso so i guess that the gasmask part isnt that important lol.
After we did the tear gas chamber test, the whole platoon where more prone for clean shaving! Especially those that puked in their gas masks. Shaving in ice cold water with those BIC disposable razors wasn’t fun either as a baby faced 19 yr old, but on the plus side my face hair grew very slowly at that age.
@@zoom5024 If you go by the book there is also a minimun lenght requirement of 3mm. In reality, as you point out, it often comes down to what the closest boss thinks should be the interpretation of the rule. In my opinion, it's gone a bit sloppy in many places.

@@jelkel25 I've not seen that but I'd be interested to see it.
I would have liked to see DPM updated to add some micro-pattern to it like the flecktarn or rhodesian patterns.
I'm a simple man. I see a Uniform History video, I press Like
The old M/59 shirt was still in circulation when I did my conscription service in 2001. It was very comfy, especially when at the base. Today we use the t-shirt + M/90 Light jacket.
3:10 - P18. I did my service at A7, a sister regiment to P18 '86 to '87 and had the M59 and M58 uniform.
ehsnils A lot of footage from Gotland and P18, Lv2 and A7 in this clip 👍😀
finally so you see m90 because I have requested it in type 5 monthwr I from sweden so fun to see damn good video
YES! I've been waiting for this one.
Idk if you know about this, but there are pics out there of a new version of M90, incorporating rust brown and steel bloo into the color palette. It looks pretty cool, sadly I lost the link to pics of this experimental pattern, so if someone who speaks Swedish can help locate it, that'd be great.
Fanns bilder på dem från när dem tävla skytte i USA och tror det var från 2019, om det hjälper dig söka.
There was pictures of these uniforms when swedish soldiers where visiting the US in a shooting competition from 2019 I think, If that helps you browse.
@@W03JokerAirsoft Search UA-cam for "Soldiers Fire AWM Sniper During European Best Sniper Team Competition" and go to 2:40 . I don't know what it was, but doubt it was experimental, probably private. Many make M90 in slightly "off" colours, but haven't seen this colourway before.
Damn, I just saw this camo, and was like huh, uniform history has to do a video on it, and you spit this out moments later
The Irish camo could be an interesting option for a future video. Well done on this as well!
As a collector i wonder why this stuff is so rare on the market, almost like the Finnish M05
As a fellow collector from Sweden it isn’t all that rear to find some m90 stuff but still somewhat uncommon here to
I'm assuming you are from the United States but the market isn't really that big there as you can just see it on the internet. It isn't all that that uncommon here in Norway but it can be a pain sometimes
To my understanding varusteleka (a finnish military surplus store) can deliver to the US. They are not he exact ones that the Finnish Defence Forces use but its very close
The Brittish company Arktis produce great outdoor clothing in different classic camos, and among them M90. The Finnish M05 you can find at www.varusteleka.com
Awesome video. Loved it. Just wondering if you're going to do a video on the MICH family of helmets through to the ACH? Asking for a friend. Cheers.
Not one mention of Chickies or ping pong balls, that took some control...... well done.
Great video.
Wow.
Screw it, it’s “Foreskin” now lol
He still said it better than I would have been able to pronounce it.
@@squishy2229 Forskning means science, or more literally "research". So Försvarets Forsknings-anstalt means the "defence's research-department".
@@theRPGmaster It was a joke
what is that vehicle at 2:53?
When doing my military service 1989-90 we got the m/59 and m/58 systems. The officers got the m/90. The m/59 system was 30 years old then. Now the m/90 is 30 years old 😀
When I did military service 80-81 we painted a lot of vehicles with this pattern I remembered it so well that I drew freehand on my friend's Volvo and he filled in with paint. I still like it.
Fresh Uniform History, awwwww yeah!
One of my favorite patterns!
The difference between M59 to M90 are amazing. I think the M90 pattern works great as it totally breaks up the shape of a human. Lets see what the new pattern will be =)
The new pattern will 100% be just another multicam clone
@@loganbaileysfunwithtrains606it will be more or less the same pattern 👍
Damn dude, i will always remember my dad comming home after military practis wearing full swed camo
An update about the new, "Nordic Common Uniform": It's now confirmed the M90 pattern will be the camouflage used for the future on Swedish uniforms, but an actual copywrited version of it (very small differences in splinter size as well a few extra details printed on it).
Could you do the Australian camouflage uniform, auscam, from 1990's through to today?
This
I'd love to hear how the air force wound up in blue combats
@@danmack3173 the same way our navy did, I imagine.
The new multi terrain version is pretty cool tbh
@@danmack3173 It's because Australians always copy whatever the Americans do.
Jellybean camo. 😂👌
0:30 I usually just click these videos because a clip of the Barrett boys is in the hover-over preview
02:00 Your pronunciation of Försvarets Forskningsanstalt is hilarious.
Would be nice to see a vid on British dpm
I would think the belgium army camo would make a great video as i always found it the nicest camo these days. Also the pre world War one uniforms of the belgains are very interesting
NCU supplier was selected yesterday, deliveries starts this year. 👍🏻
As a swed I had to smile when you tried to pronounce FOA at 2:04 :D
Does anybody know please what is the three wheeled vehicle at 2:53? I think they are Belgians.
EDIT: It is this.......
Fabrique Nationale AS 24
2:51 an American 101st Airborne solider with a nickle plated p38?
the south and north variants are still in use i got issued a north jacket and south trousers just 1 year ago
Awesome video 🤘🏻 🤯
Thank you for. A Swede still in the service! ☺
Can we get video about Baltic nation camos? Don't really care if all 3 are bundled up or separate.
The splinter camo will not be replaced, and I've never heard anyone say that they want a new camo pattern. It's extremely effective up here.
The new camo pattern will look the same, but copyrighted. And it will be worn on our version of the NCU system
Great, finally were doing nordic patterns!Next: Finnish M05 please.
But when a video on Swedish beards?
I had no idea we had versions for different parts of the country. So that's why the jacket didn't match the new pants 😯
2:56 i am so happy to see Bulgarian camouflage. This is a photo of Bulgarian border patrol, 60' or 70'.
around 2:55/56 is a Great pattern for that environment .
I absolutely love that pattern. Good job sweden.
which camoflage is shown at 2:56?
This channel's gonna blow
Nice one. I never knew much about the pattern and how it came to be. :-)
Where can I find online Swedish M90 uniforms for a non-exorbitant price?
2:57 What army is that?
Bulgarian border guards during the cold war.
Kid in the background at 9:30 - VIVE LA RESISTANCE!
I got a set of M90 in Kosovo, it's the tanker version of it. Great pattern. Was thrilled to trade it for a set of ACUs!
