If you had stood in the same spot, but aimed for the 3rd metal strip from the bottom (those lines on the windshield), you can jump through easily. that checkerboard room is what is called a skybox. all unreal engnine game engine use them to spawn collision mesh. (the ship you can walk on). the dumb devs just forgot to move it :P cool find though!
