In my first ever podcast episode, I talked to Kal Penn, who has one of the strangest resumes in Hollywood. You most likely remember Kal as half of the stoner comedy duo “Harold and Kumar”, or if you’ve watched a lot of medical dramas like I have you may have enjoyed his 2 season arc on House MD where he lit a patient on fire instead of doing chest compressions. But if your name is “Barack Obama” (hey Prez, check your DMs, come on the show?) you may instead remember Kal as a full time staff member at the White House. Huh? President Obama hired the White Castle guy, after he was already famous? That’s right. Your tax dollars paid his salary for years as a full time staff member of the White House Office of Public Engagement. Turns out the roller coaster ride of Kal’s life didn’t end with him sitting at the movie premiere for Van Wilder, next to his strict Indian immigrant parents, watching his oiled body slide off a naked woman while playing a character literally named “Taj Mahal” (yikes). In Kal’s new book, You Can’t Be Serious, he not only details some of the stunning racism he’s faced throughout his 20+ years in Hollywood, but also stories of those late nights in Washington DC working alongside President Obama navigating some of America’s most highly controversial political issues, such as the hurdles they had to clear to remove the army’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, which barred openly queer people from serving in the armed forces. I asked Kal about all of these big picture stories, as well as some smaller ones, like how it’s possible he walks around every day with a tattoo on his left arm that has a typo.

The part in H&K where they're in the hallway and don't want to go back to their apartment for his phone and say "We've gone too far" has had a permanent place in my memory, to the point where that is my exact reaction whenever I've forgotten something and don't want to go back and get it

Thanks for letting him speak with no interruptions, I hate when the guest doesn’t get to finish their statement or story before they’re cut off to answer an unrelated question. I haven’t seen these movies in so long I’m going to have to check them out again. Great episode, looking forward to more!

5 Stars! Dr. Mike has the perfect personality to host a podcast. He's inquisitive, empathetic, funny, and kind to his guests and audiences. It's why we requested a podcast years ago. Keep up the good work, Dr. Mike. Just make sure you don't burn out. Med question: How dangerous is cellulitis? Does it heal on its own or do you need treatment? ✌🏽

I love this podcast idea and the fact that the questions are not your typical run of the mill interview type. Kal is like an onion with so many different layers/aspects to his life. The actor, the comedian, the intrigue in medical knowledge, son of hard working immigrant parents, author and man of political interests is surprising and wonderfully appreciated. Thanks for choosing him and sharing.

I started binge watching House when I was very ill with a cluster of disorders that doctors struggled to diagnose. I caught myself wishing I could find a renegade doctor like House to figure it out. Until...I realized he almost always brought his patients to the brink of death in his process of elimination diagnostic practice and gained an appreciation for “first, do no harm”!

Great first episode to the podcast. Loved that both you and Kal were going back and forth asking and answering the same questions that you originally gave him. He's such a great guy and a fantastic actor. Also really hoping for a H&K4 as well. As for a medical question... how often do patients ask you what symptoms or diagnosis qualifies as being disabled, meaning those who are trying to find ways to get on social security disability that maybe technically don't qualify?

Can’t wait for more of this. I always find myself so interested in your content that I just don’t want the video to end. Now we finally get longer incredible, and insightful Doctor Mike dialogue. I’m a huge podcast fan as well so this is very exciting. Congrats on all your success and on behalf of all the lives I’m sure you’ve touched, thanks for what you do, I always tell people I wish I could move just so you could be my doctor, your honesty and humbleness is something I always find lacking from doctors, it’s inspiring and gives me hope that we will begin to see more doctors implicate these traits in their practices. It’s good to see a doctor that remembers they are still human and not some infallible god.

I loved the conversation. It's really fascinating to listen to two intelligent people talking and sharing their views.
What I really liked that every question was asked and answered in a compact manner. I liked the way Mike asks questions related to little bit of everything. It didn't seem boring or unidirectional. I loved the podcast format videos. Mike is really good at interviewing. Both of their personalities and perspectives were expressed which made it really worth watching. I never saw Mike like this before, this is new for me.
Mike's personality is quite suitable for podcast. He make's it seem easy.

What a brilliant conversation between two super-interesting people! One take-away is: I agree that it would benefit us all if Kal went into politics or, as he prefers, keeps performing such good public service. I didn't know you had this Check Up channel as well - keen to see more. I also have a very odd and burning question about a fellow who sits behind the Jan 6th panel when televised...I have no idea who he is but am exceedingly intrigued, have searched high and low to no avail. Seeing that you're a mate of Schumer's...think you could help?

Finally! The podcast I've been hoping for from Dr. Mike. Since you interviewed Kal Penn who was on house, yourself seem to be a great listener, and asked for a medical question; What do you do when your Drs don't seem to be listening or hearing you out? Example: I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in my 20s with no testing other than the question, "Did you have a difficult childhood?" I'm in my 40s now and its only gotten worse. My thoughts at the time and still now are it could be Relapsing and Remitting M.S. and not to muddy the water but I have a 25% chance of EDS but my Dr says I'm too old for genetic testing and ignores everything else. I do know that my leg/s, fingers or hands, and my eyesight shouldn't have been going numb or blinking out for days and weeks at a time in my 20s not to mention the very unsavory symptoms I won't mention here. To tie this to HOUSE I don't think anyone thinks that character is a good Dr but he gets to the bottom of things and legit that's all anyone who has felt dismissed wants. Please help. It's gotten to the point ages ago where I'll tell my Dr I'll exercise and lose weight the very second one of them can at least try to take my concerns seriously. If I measured my physical activity on how much I feel like I've been heard in 20yrs, I'd be absolutely bed bound with machines doing everything for me. It's that difficult to get anyone to try. Thanks for getting this podcast going. I'm super excited for this.

I know at the end you asked to ask a medical question in the comment, but I’m not sure I have one. Maybe just a question from a previous video about ozempic/wegovy. I’m 36. Overweight…pretty much due to stress and not dieting and exercising appropriately over the last year, but I’ve noticed I get out of breath a lot, have recently in the last several months noticed my blood pressure higher than it usually is (which I’m usually on the low end: 110/70-ish) and now it’s 135/85. I haven’t been tested for diabetes in a couple years either. I guess my question is….if I have hypertension and am diabetic or even pre diabetic, would getting on wegovy be a good option? In conjunction with increased exercise and eating healthier of course. I know that people can gain the weight back if they get off it, but if you use it as a tool to help kickstart your health journey as an overweight person to get healthier and continue your diet and exercise even after you’ve lost the weight you want and get off wegovy…would it be worth it to mention to your doctor to want to try it to help get you started to getting healthier. I know there’s no magic pill or medication to fix things completely, but maybe it could be used as a tool to help guide me into a healthier lifestyle as a beginning step. Any thoughts?

Never had pancreatitis but had gallbladder issues. Finally they took me to the ER one night and I was sent straight straight to the OR to have it out.

This conversation was so interesting and funny at some points. Great podcast, keep doing it! It literally went by so fast. What causes a dry red bump on the leg that is not hurting at all? I’ve never checked it before because it doesn’t make any problem but I’m just curious

I enjoyed watching Kal play ‘Kevin’ in the TV series, ‘How I Met Your Mother’; I was rooting for ‘Robin’ to end up with him.
Great Q/A’s on the episode. Going to def watch his other stuff
Ken Jeong would be an awesome future guest 👌

31:24 when he’s talking about the words “um” and “like” he’s right.
In high school we had a senior paper everyone had to do. And one of the challenges of the paper was that we had to then present it verbally. So our goal was to take out words we normally fall to as fillers; such as “like” “ugh or um” “and” etc.

I give this podcast 5 stars. I’ve watched DrMikes videos on iTunes, but the interaction between the two of them was terrific. Other than White Castle, I’ve never seen what Kal has done and I love his political career and intellect. Dr Mike is a great interviewer. My medical question is: at 75 yo, should I have surgery for bone on bone knee arthritis? i really miss walking and can tell sedentary habits affect so many other systems. Loved the podcast!

Been listening while I’m making dinner and I loved it❤. What is a good way to convince family members to visit a doctor if they have a fear of doctors or hospitals?

I would absolutely love to leave a 10 star review!! Im listening to this on the Tube of You, so idk how. 😢 i absolutely love everything about this! I love how you genuinely listen to people And not listen to respond. Super important! You say you suck at communicating bc you're a doctor, but i feel like you nail it!:)
Im watching this 9 months after it was posted, but here is my medical question:
My leg/foot muscles twitch and cramp up randomly. Ill by lying in bed and, all of the sudden, my foot/leg will cramp--like a charliehorse cramp and i had to get out of bed and stand on my foot to get relief. Why is this happening??😭

Great episode was listening to it at work, I always loved Kal Penn as an actor and loved whatever he’s in.
As for a medical question, being type 1 diabetic, I’ve always wondered if there’s been any real evidences about pancreas transplant being a cure? I’ve googled about that kind of stuff but I don’t trust much and never asked my doctor of anything about that. But was curious on how you see it if there’s a way?

Medical question. Is having 2 severe migraine disorders normal? I’ve had a constant migraine that’s debilitating for almost 3 years now. Every. Damn. Day.
