The Hillfort at Lennoxtown

- A walk in the Campsie Fells above Lennoxtown in search of an ancient hillfort. The Meikle Reive fort is thought to date to the Early Iron Age, and contains a series of very well preserved banks and ditches that once afforded the hillfort's occupants a good level of defence. Although now largely earthen in nature, it's walls were once some twelve feet thick and made of stone. This was a very well defended hillfort, and today exists at a good level of preservation. That preservation includes a pond, the only Early Iron Age pond I have ever seen and, of course, the question is: what on earth was it used for? This ancient hillfort sits amidst some of Scotland's most beautiful scenery, and as such the hike to get there offers some wonderful hilly views.

Great day out, thanks for showing us your adventure! At the start of the video, it was almost as if you were trying to convince yourself about heading into the hills. We were through in Lonoxtown a few days ago, it's a nice little place when the weather is good. Hillforts are always somewhat of a letdown when you actually visit them, you need to try and imagine how it would have been before the land was eroded away and they lost their sheer scale. Thinking back, it would have been a foreboding sight. Great video as always.
Many thanks. It's amazing just how invisible this fort is even when quite close. I suppose in many ways being hidden was a good thing, especially if you're trying to avoid attacks on your settlement. But I imagine when those thick stone walls were properly in place and the interior was busy with structures it would have stood out a lot more. I think some of the larger hillforts actually wanted to be seen, their size and impressive defences being a statement of power.

Hello Eddy. Grand wee walk that pal,(how far from the kirk is the fort ) lovely weather you had for it as well. I do hope that foot can be mended but not sure how much the doctor can do on the phone !.As for the Fort itself i am always amazed at where people decided to settle,the pond would probably be used for irregation and watering animals ? Many thanks. The fort's just over a mile from the kirk, as the crow flies, and closer to two miles via paths and tracks that pass close to Stafford Cottage and Garmore. You can see it on the Ordnance Survey's Landranger map #64.

To go in search of a hillfort is like a Magical Quest. I am watching this late on a June night, after Glasgow is out of Tier 3.

I think a lot of the 'earthworks' you might have seen on the way up to the fort are part of the shale workings that were common all along the Campsie's at one time, shallow mine workings and their spoils methinks!?
There are certainly lots of old workings here and there. That said, I actually thought Maiden Castle was a good bit further down than where I was standing, so I wasn't sure what those bumps were. But on looking at a National Library of Scotland comparison map that shows then and now I see that I was actually very close to that castle's location, so it wouldn't surprise me if those bumps on the ground were somehow related to it.
Another great video Ed I'm sure you have many years ahead true alot of people are and will feel the affects of this pandemic for a long time but things are now finally looking better great to see you back out in the great outdoors

Glad you enjoyed it. I may revisit the fort as I made too many assumptions, got a few things wrong (par for the course) and a few things are niggling at me. You can't beat a good niggle. I'm just wondering about the flattish area on the south of the fort, and I can well imagine it as a place of habitation with many hut circles. Take care.

Loved the wee comedy speed walk...
I'm not sure if that bit of footage worked as I had intended. I was trying to quickly show all the banks and ditches on the north side of the fort, of which there are many, but it just came out like some sort of silent film of the 1930s.
