if I remember correctly, the dreamworld loads in as a physical location once you enter the stranger, its just a giant plane facing away from the sun that the game teleports you to when you fall asleep. If you park the ship in a specific spot outside the stranger, it collides with the dream world once the stranger starts moving away from the sun, which lets you get your suit back.
