I am literally building a bed today for some bamboo I'm propagating from my neighbor. Screening out the afternoon sun.

How important to pot them? I'm in very sandy central Florida zone 9b and can plant them under a temporary sun shade. Best time of year? best species for me?

I'd stick to clumping varieties and only pot them for a bit while they develop some roots. Look around at a local botanical garden or amusement park to see what thrives in your region. My favorite clumping bamboo is Dragon Bamboo and I live Vivax, a running bamboo.

will tan or green colored cut-offs regrow? i want to pick them up from street-side and hammer them down into ground where a fence is too high and around the asparagus bed. do not want growing bamboo. zone 7b alabama

I use them to support my dragon fruit plants... Sometimes they will grow if you just stick them in the soil when cut fresh. Cut them and let them dry out a bit, they then should make a nice fence.

Some varieties will root without roots, but the success rate is much lower in my experience.

it is better to take cuttings of canes that have already produced some areal roots.

If you want to talk semantics, pruning is a horrible description. It seems that you and another viewer had a hard time with my title. I will change it.

@@WhatPlantisthatPaul ok well i would hate to be considered " that guy " lol so i will say ok since you removed a clum from the rizome you are propagating, i will just say it was my problem not yours, i was just disappointed as i was needing to look at different methods in propagating clumping type. but i appreciate your effort even if it was not what i needed for me the title was misleading but my problem not yours, so sorry to upset you. i did find the info i needed and just finished potting about 80 new cuttings today, need alot more to protect the river edge. thanks for you sharing. i have not looked into the running type before,

@@WhatPlantisthatPaul cool i will get notifications and watch, i did learn from your vid. i have always been fascinated with bamboo, moved from Nevada to Philippines so my first time working with it. looking into preserving bamboo, but good luck to me trying to find borax here -lol i am propagating what i have. the local gov planted just a few along the river ( they called it " giant bamboo " and i am going to try to make a solid wall on both sides as the river is fast doing damage, will see how it works, still so many questions -lol any idea how close i can or should plant clumping to make solid hedge ? so far i think i will try maybe one meter apart

Semantics... This is more efficient than propagating black bamboo without roots, although the same process will result in the same outcome, only delayed.
