Hi. I'm from Tunisia first-time owner of malinois and I just wanted to thank you for the great service you're offering with this video You have no idea how much I appreciate it and how much you helped me thank you and keep up the great work you are doing thanks again
Thank you! This is so helpful to me. I've been struggling to get my dog to hold on to the tug just like the dog in the beginning of the video. I used the flirt pole and the "out" too much with him. He began to see more value in chasing the toy than actually catching and possessing it. I have been using your tips for building frustration and tugging. Only issue I'm having now is holding onto the tug! I only outweigh him by 15lbs on a good day. He drags me around the park and I'm sure many onlookers have gotten a good laugh XD Another thing that has really helped him understand the value of the tug was to stop letting him chase the toy. Whenever he either let go of the tug or lost his grip, I put him in an obedience command. By doing so, I made him stop moving and calm down a little. He hates both those things so it became great motivation to not let go.
Thank you Robert, I've been watching your videos for 2 months, and I can clearly say that you are a true master. On March 25, I will have a new family member, an 8-week-old Malinois puppy, who comes from a very famous breeding in Italy, Casa Bellegarde Di Cinzia Bisio. The owner keeps the female and puppies in her house, and gives them the best possible attention. I learned a lot from your videos and I want to thank you for your time so that we and our dog can have an excellent life. God bless you for everything you do for us. Thanks Robert.
Gosh, I'd love to hear & see how you guys do. I have a VERY WELL BRED German Shepherd, but made so many mistakes because I didn't know better. Robert Cabral is awesome--if you are following his training methods, I expect you will have a TRULY EXCELLENT dog!!!❤❤❤
Hi Robert, learned to play tug with my GSD Bonn when he was a pup, by watching a previous video of yours. Great way to really bond and to reward when adding some obedience to it. Keep up the great tutorials, I am a member of your online classes and look forward to Thursday morning when I receive them here in the UK.
I have used your previous videos on training my dog tug of war. IT WORKS. My dog's (Labrador) tug is focused and intense. People are always amazed that kids can be playing, cars driving by, other dogs playing, but, my dog is focused on playing tug. I will say one thing though, I don't do the miss stuff, me or my dog have issues setting it up so that the tug is gotten in those situations. I have been bit a few too many times trying the miss stuff. Maybe I can try it again, maybe I should wear gloves. Stay safe.
@@RobertCabralDogs hahaha. I love my stinker so much, a couple minor scars is worth the price of admission, lol. But he's TOO careful not to nip me!!❤ (But lots of scars from before prong collar and teaching loose leash heel, teaching leash sensitivity, it was as bad as it gets).
That's just part of the game. I get nicks and cuts all the time from tug. I find it really helps if you video yourself playing tug. The problem is almost always you moving your hand last minute or the dog is targeting the handle or the slowest moving part.
I have a 3.5 month old dobermen I play tag with soft toys I get him going he brings everything back it's so impressive what the dog can do already. when should I move to a normal tug or do I have a while?
I have a 2 year old Boxer who has a soft bite until it's tug time. It's REALLY easy to get his prey drive up and then it's game on! I have to pay more attention to what he does when I let him have the tug toy. I don't remember if he comes back for more or runs away with it.
Any advice on how you get his prey drive up first? It's hit or miss with my GSD, can't figure it out. But seems best after I've left the house & left him alone for awhile, THEN he's more motivated and begging to play.
My dogs both don't want anything to do with the tug toy no matter what I try to do they won't bite the tug. One just nibbles at it with her front teeth and the other one doesn't want it in his mouth at all. How do I get them interested in the tug?
This! Is the video that i need to train my dog (Boerboel) bite force. Very much thank you for making this, i,m ging to subscribe you, and watching much of your videos.
What should one do If the dog wants to tug and is committed but then once the "tug" is released the dog want to just chew on it? Should you just take it back and restart the "tug"? Should the game end?
Hook a line up to the tug and rip it away before the dog settles in to dissect/consume the tug. You can also try the two toy method, use a second tug to tempt the dog back into the game. Terriers typically prefer to destroy the toy rather than play the game.
Beautiful Robert . Frustratingly I cannot do this with Zed at the moment due to my ulcer, Doctors orders. We usually do as you do a little every day and she comes right back for more every time just like Goofy. Zed rags it hard when she wins it : ) I have put you in my 3 Highly Recommended Dog Trainer video and listed you on my home page, hope that was ok. Thank you . I so want to play tug with my dog as I miss it big time. Old age is cruel lol : )
Old age IS cruel, but great dogs help force us to remain young. I put on a TON of weight during COVID, have never been in as bad shape. I get short of breath on long walks and short jogs with my Gernan Shepherd...but nothing gets me more motivated to push myself than he does, because he needs it and I "owe" it to him.
Hi Robert, Love your videos and we watch it slot as advice to train our 5 months husky lady puppy. One Thing that we don't find a proper solution for tho is, her laying down behaviour. When we walk her and don't let her interact with other dogs, she just falls down on the ground, and I really mean it, she is not laying down, she falls. She does not move a muscle. What works is that we just drop the leash and continue to Walk like nothing happens and don't pay any attention to her, she hates that. But of course that's not always possible. Do you have a advise?
Oh my goodness, no advice, but that's funny as heck!! My German Shepherd's "BFF" is a Husky, I've grown to love the vocal & hardheaded breed. My friend's Husky comes with a lot of challenges, but ALSO many unappreciated stellar strengths...I bet you're does, too...
I don't have the stamina to keep playing tug without breaks 😂 Luckily my Shar Pei really enjoys killing it once he got it, so i get time to get my breath inbetween fights
He's a gorgeous old Malinois. Not for the faint of heart, or for people that can't exercise rigorously a minimum of 1 hour daily PLUS additional training & direct engagement time. But fabulous dogs, IF you can meet their HIGH needs (otherwise, expect to rehome. And since you've been warned--feel like a failure if you have to rehome. Very, intensely needy dogs).❤
My dog loves to tug. But I have to bring it to him to initiate. Once he has it, he'd rather take it somewhere and chew on it. Not bring it back to me for another tug. Any suggestions?
It's really hard to get my dog interested in toys, which is a shame because it makes it harder to get her energy out with ways that are not obedience. When she does get interested, she just wants to toss it around herself. I'm trying to find ways to keep her engaged with me.
Malinois don't quit, there is a difference in breed. I've had Bull breeds for many years. This is my first Mal and his pray drive is 5 fold of any Bulldog I've had. Mals just don't quit. My Mal is 9mo old, by 5mos his bite was perfect. He would not out no matter what until told.
Once my dog is out in the open like where you guys are he’s sniffing everything for about 10 minutes before he will do is on me but does get distracted easily at home he’s on me like white on rice
Yup. You're probably pretty boring. Run with your dog, go slow, find "random" treats, give him a job and as long as he's not interested in you, long leash.
There are so many reasons to play tug. I do it with any dog that is willing to give it a go for pure fun and nothing else. Other reasons I play tug: it builds confidence, coordination and engagement. Tug is a game of possession and teaches dogs the different modes of possession. Training as part of play removes conflict and you are training in drive. I strong tug game is also a very powerful motivator to use as a reward. Play also ignites the seeking system which stops the fear, rage and panic systems so can be a powerful tool in counter conditioning.
At some point, being able to use a toy\tug as a reward is very helpful in obedience. Plus, for some working breeds, very important if you want to go further and do "dog sports". But if you have a very sweet pet that doesn't "need" it, may not be an issue for you. They give us so much, don't they? Whatever they need, to live their happiest, best dog lives. PS: my German Shepherd WOULD have better quality of life & training with a better bite & toy drive. But maybe not so important in some happy go lucky dogs. Best wishes & luck to you!🐾💜

the misses are good for building more intense drive. yes, you can catch a bite, but practice makes perfect.. and a few scars :)
