It's a shame no one has commented on this. It's very good! Delicate and sweet, but forceful when it needs to be. I'm English, so I've been hearing this forever, and playing in it too, and it's nice to hear it with a *different* "accent". Thanks very much, and kudos to the conductor.
One of the brightest gems of English music given a real polish in this affectionate sympathetic performance
by an ensemble and conductor previously uknown to me. How pleasing that the music is being performed
in Europe by those who obviously have an affinity with it. I heartily concuir with the views expressed by
other comments from those who are familiar with this piece "nearer to home".
Of course, Elgar gets quite a bit of attention from American orchestras, too. He wanted (along with friend Richard Strauss et al.) to move European music in new directions, never craving the jingoistic elements Edwardian society asked of him. His exciting "In The South (Alassio)" overture, more a tone poem really, is a fabulous European work with German/Italian influences. On YT, Muti and the Philadelphia Orch. do a great job.
This is a very good, solid performance.
This has got to be the best performance of this entire piece ever!
Very refreshing to hear Variation IX played at the correct tempo, instead of the snail’s pace most conductors perform it.
I'm so enjoying these performances from the Mannheim Phil. and have subscribed. It's fascinating to hear Elgar performed outside his native land, as we are probably rather possessive about him, but he was strongly influenced by German music and would surely have been delighted to be performed there. I was reminded of the occasionally tricky tempi changes in the work, quite demanding in live performance, but everyone kept pretty much together. Many thanks for the upload.
Einer meiner liebsten Komponisten und spätestens bei der überragenden Interpretation von Nimrod war es dann um mich geschehen.
Selten hört man Nimrod im "perfekten" Tempo :)
Excellent rendition. The tempo is perfect.
Thank you
Nice version!
It's very good. They need to keep it in their repetoire and each time they play it will be more familiar.
Thank you. We will 🙂
musica di nostalgico pathos, di decadente bellezza, elgar un 'aristocratico della musica .
Excellent
Am i the one who hears the beginning part of matrix soundtrack "clubbed to death" introduction?
Because it is! Clubbed to Death samples the beginning!
A nice performance but spoilt a bit by Nimrod being too quick.
I would like to disagree - Nimrod sounds very good at this tempo, and this particular rendition of the variation by this orchestra was very beautiful indeed!
This is the speed that Elgar himself intended it to be played! It has been spoiled by many conductors over the years by adding too much rubato (Bernstein being the worst offender).
This piece is always judged by the quality of Nimrod.... which in my opinion the tempo is too hurried.
