  • There are many secrets to catching salmon and one of the main things is ensuring that your tackle is in good order before starting.
In this video I look at the hazards of winding nylon onto the reel. Something I call Monday morning syndrome.
This will be part of a series of hints and tips I hope you enjoy.

I always finish by adding a strike indicator to the line. It stops this incident occurring

Yes it's a common error. In any event you've got to be really careful spooling fine diameter backing such as Gudebrod - it can easily trap and jam if not evenly wound on.

i always make a point of always changing my leader after every visit to the river, i never use the same leader twice and always change it for a new day, you can never tell what weaknesses are in it after a day on the river, i dont like to take the chance as i would not like to lose a big fish due to a weak point in my line, for all the price of a spool of line

Yes, when I started as a ghillie this was my job every morning as the young underghillie. I took out the rods and put on a new leader. No one at Knockando or Lower Pitchroy every fished with an old leader. Simple and as you say, costs nothing.

Its our new Cadence, made in England, reel. A lovely piece of kit and one a good many are beginning to enjoy.

It's one of our Bespoke, made in England, Cadence reels. I'm loving it and wish I had used it instead of the one I did on the day. I wouldn't have encountered the problem.

Shame on you Ian, a experienced guy like you making a rookie mistake. Nylon is cheap as chips, and i always discard mine at end of fishing session 😁

Me too, just takes one fish of a life time, when you look at the cost of rods and reels your leader is very cheap.

It had nothing to do with old nylon, it was the fact I put new nylon onto the reel before I was ready to use it. The nylon then got caught under itself. I'd never use old nylon.
