- Barry Davis was one of Gable's star wrestlers. Davis was an olympian and former head coach at Wisconsin. He's an incredible individual and a phenomenal athlete. However, the night before the Big Ten Wrestling tournament, he struggled to make weight, and decided to run away. Gable went into detective mode and the events that followed are astonishing!! Dan Gable is Iowa's heart and soul.
I remember cutting weight. It was pretty bad. The shower after you had to force yourself not to drink the shower water. 3 ice cubes before bed. Weigh ins next day.
Should've turned on the car heat and put on layers of clothes and did like push ups in the back seat lol
Had on-sight weigh ins and I did this with my ex (not push ups tho) different typa cardio, gassed out that day and wrestled horrible
It’s not easy to be at that point the greatest college wrestler to ever lace them up, and then become maybe an even better coach. I first had started wrestling in 1994, and despite the fact that Dan Gabel had not wrestled in basically 25 years. At that point, everyone that I wrestled with was wearing the Gables for wrestling shoes. That’s the equivalent of people wearing Jordans today.
And people that never wrestled before. Don’t realize the stress that your body and mind go through. It’s unlike any other sport.

And that was when you had to make scratch weight for the regional and national qualifiers. In college back then, they used to give you the allowance early on in the season, then slowly reduce the pound number until there was none.
Very happy to see the leadership by the legend in this age of wokism.
