  • The That's Incredible team investigates claims by the Cromarty family that the Amityville "Horror House" (which they bought a year after the Lutzes fled) is not haunted, after all - and that the whole haunting was a fraud. Check out how Mrs Cromarty proves the front door was never broken/repaired with the help of her magic screwdriver!
    Discuss this case at www.amityvillefaq.com/truthboard/
Here's a link to an article I wrote about Rick Moran, which deals with the dubious claims of a DEA agent watching the house on the night of the murders and the outright falsehoods of multiple guns being used that night, etc: tinyurl.com/y8g...

Given the fact the house was built in 1928, it's seen a lot more than just the DeFeos and Lutzes. Still, if a mass murder occurred in my house I'd have the creeps just thinking back to the night of the massacre, and to be fair no one has really thought about anything that might've happened in the house or on the land before the DeFeos and the Lutzes came on the scene

Okay folks, understand, that if you are NOT Gen X, that this would be hard for you to understand. We had all of FIVE channels, literally. When this episode aired, all of America watched That's Incredible, the way folks began watching Unsolved Mysteries. Back then, when this aired, ALL of America was watching this at the very same time & this story truly freaked out this country. This was very new to all Americans& it made all of us think. You really had to be there to know what this was about.

I’m gen x myself though towards the cutoff date throughout childhood there were at least 50 channels(of which maybe 20 were worth watching) there were the 3 networks of course but there were also basic and premium cable along with all the syndicated channels. MTV was literally 21 on the dial in the 80s in my area,I’m always confused when people talk about how there were only 3 channels. Then again the 70s could’ve been a different story than the 80s so I don’t know,I maybe it also depends what part of the country you lived in but that’s how it was in the northeast

It’s possible this was recorded from over the air tv and back in the days of Analog vhf tv The ch6 part was located near the FM radio bands so it’s possible a strong nearby station’s sound could be picked up faintly through the tv antenna and be heard. People used to buy filters called FM traps for their TVs to prevent this. Still eerie especially for this tv program.

The house and area look beautiful on film. However, just as important as looks and physical environment is the social environment. I suspect the people who live up that way are arseholes...and have like a really strict homeowners' association. It would be a pain to live there because of that...I figure. Picking your nose on the front lawn could set them off.

I bought the story hook, line and sinker as a kid. But as an adult you put on your critical thinking skills, take a look at the evidence and realize it's absolute bullshit. The thing is, that the house has become such an icon of terror that I'm scared shitless when I look at it even though nothing bad happened there aside from the murders. Speaking of which, Ronald Defeo died a few months back, so maybe we can now officially consider the true Amityville Horror, the murder of the DeFeo family, well and truly over.

But once it was all the way up, the window came falling down and became heavy. His hands became flattened and his mother took him to the kitchen to give him an ice pack. Once she got it, his hands were back to normal. So don't you think that the ghosts could have made it look like the house destroyed itself and then put it back to normal?

as far as the cromartys go, they knew what they were getting into when they bought that house so screw them ....i do believe something happened to the lutz family while there , and the defeos were a mess...dysfunctional at best as a family... my best guess on what really happened is that it was drug related in some way ....i think george and kathy lutz looked like they were on some shit at times as well...who knows, ronnie says he doesnt remember what happened that night and i believe him....

Thanks for the upload. I was in my early teens when the Amityville hoax was perpertrated and the "true" story in the book and the movie terrified me. I can remember the bloody Lutzes on TV chat shows, flogging their story. I can also remember seeing this when it first aired, and I wanted to track George and Kathy Lutz down and put them through a mincer. I'm guessing a lot of other comment posters here are too young to fully appreciate the damage the Lutzes did spreading lies and fear like this. I'm glad they were sued over and over and hope it left them penniless. I'm an atheist, sadly. If I wasn't I'd be hoping they're burning in hell for terrifying a generation of children and teenagers to make a quick cheesy buck.

I agree with you. I was also in my early teens and this crap frightened the living daylights out of me before I was old enough to understand that it was all nonsense. Apparently the priest who they claim was told to "get out" by a demonic voice, actually sued them and settled out of court, because nothing of the sort had ever happened. It was just all a ruse by the Lutzes to get themselves out of debt.

And my guess, Sinoque, is that you take life far too seriously. Number one, I was being facetious. And number two, ghosts are considered supernatural. I'm not saying I believe in them or don't believe in them, but if so called "supernatural" occurences do happen, it stands to reason that they defy logic and explanation, which is why these happenings and their existence or lack therof are so debated in the first place.

Agreed. Ron DeFeo Jr. is an unreliable source of information. Ric Osuna wrote "The Night the DeFeos died" and interviewed Ron DeFeo Jr., who said he was giving a truthful interview to Osuna to write an account of the events that happened in the murders. Not 60 days later did Ron DeFeo Jr. say Osuna was making up lies about the interview.

One thing that most people don't know about was that a victim of 9/11 lived there, it's just a tragic coincidence. I'm just glad that they probably didn't exploit that part of the house's history in any of the documentaries I've seen, probably to be respectful. At least they left THAT decency in the story. I completely agree with the Cromartys, and I hope (if they're still around) they'll be happy about it. I feel sorry for them

I live near Toms River, New Jersey, filming site of the first three Amityville movies in the late 70's and early 80's. Even THAT house, which is not a Dutch Colonial, only made to appear like one, was visited by crazies. The owners lifted the house from its foundation, moved it to the back of their property, built a different looking house in the old one's place, & planted trees to hide the original, repainted house, which had a different address and lower profile location, harder to see.

It was deffinitely some kind of a cover-up.This is a good website:

Does anyone remember when "That's Incredible" did an episode on a haunted Toys 'R Us.When the store would close, the next morning employees would find toys on the floor knocked off from shelves and water faucet in the restroom would turn on by itself. The tv crew would set cameras and had a photo taken of a shadow at the end of an aisle.

This was unheard of in the 1970s, hell, even in the 20th Century alone. No one would take this seriously now, but back then, evil was not discussed at the kitchen table the way that it is played out today. This was the hottest & most scariest story that was ever discussed. Merv Griffin even had the Lutzes on his show (some one uploaded the interview on YT, but I was THERE). What I am saying is that, 30 years from now, your kids will laugh at many of you for being so stuck on Ipads&Iphones. Watch

Great footage. Thanks for posting. One of my favorite movies (the 1st 3 Amityvilles, `79, `82, `83). It should be noted that both the Amityville house, and the Tom's River, NJ house (used in 1st 3 movies) have been modified over the years. The NJ house is now blue, has no dormers, or quarter-moon windows or gambrel roof. The Amityville house's attic windows, were changed twice as if to disguise the home. The house was origianlly dark green with white trim.

I’m ever watching this in 1979 I was 12 years years old living in San Jose California and I remember being scared because we had a big two-story house on a cul-de-sac and I’m back in the day in the 70s when it was like awesome you know the block parties the pool parties I just remember watching this and being scared to get out of my bed. Something might grab me by the ankles at night so I would jump way out of my bed onto the carpet for fear somebody grabbing my ankles and pulling me into the bed you know how kids are when you’re little yeah, I’ve remember watching this and with Leonard Nimoy the guy from Star Trek and I got totally freaked out 😱😱😱😱

LOL! The house was up for sale again in 2010, I believe. Looks awesome inside! If I were super rich (and it really isn't haunted), I'd be tempted to buy it just so I could go up to the 3rd floor at 3:15 in the morning and yell out the window: "IT'S 3:15 AND ABSOLUTELY NOTHING IS HAPPENING HERE!"

The town should just buy the house and turn it into a horror museum / bed and breakfast of some kind where people can pay to take tours and stay the night....this would keep MOST of the crazies at bay from trespassing or being nosy. Lots of houses with similar pasts have done this and it was very successful...The Lizzy Borden house, and Villisca Ax Murder house are just a few that come to mind... and many more. It makes both tourists and the town happy. It really would be the best thing to do!

Oh harperusa, I don't mean for everyone to listen to me and bow down to me. Geez. I just think it would be awesome if that house was a museum or a B&B where you can stay, like the Borden's house in Fall River or the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose. The Amityville house is too famous to be a private residence IMO. It isn't the only house in the world and the owners could make MILLIONS by opening it up for people to see, like the owners of other famous houses around the world have done.

I remember hearing that just because a house was haunted at a certain time doesn't mean the things haunting it will continue. Like it goes into remission or something. I don't know, I butchered that explanation.
But I do know there is a haunted house behind me that was haunted for years and then that family moved out and the new family hasn't experienced anything at all. Yet everyone who went into the house before they moved had, including myself.

  • @kittyscratchesboo

I disgree, but we have our right to agree or disagree. But at the time, both families (the Defeos and the Lutzes) were quite credible and the others (the greedy lousy attorneys and all of the other "ghost busters" who entered the picture after the fact were the ones who discredited the events which occurred to these families. You have to remember, in those days, everyday Americans were not so aching to be seen on national tv. Those were different times, people actually valued privacy.

I saw a show where the guy who wrote The Ammetyville horror book said he made it all up. I think he wrote it off of some real events, like there were murders in it before they bought it and they noticed some weird stuff happening in the house, but the main story he wrote was all fiction. That is what the doucmentary said

  • @kittyscratchesboo
    @kittyscratchesboo 12 років тому +1

That is what I mean. The house itself was even more so frightening BEFORE the Defeo family was killed by their son. Both families are credible about the events that they suffered. I read the book BEFORE the film was released. The movie itself is freaky to watch. I never believed the film, the FACT that this occured was what scared me. Their private account was NOT a HOAX. Again, the person who called it a hoax was not even around when this story was released. AN entire country was scared in 1975
