    I feel that sometimes people buy super expensive fragrances only because they are expensive, not because they smell good. If you took a super expensive fragrance, let people sample it, and tell them it was from Wal Mart, they'd probably tell you it's the worst thing they've ever smelled. But just because it has a niche name on it, and because of the high price, they will say it's the most wonderful scent ever made.

    I paused this video to comment. I have to say I don't fully understand the entirety of the shade thrown at Creed. I've gathered that a lot of it is due to resentment and contrarianism. But from the "other side", the niche-loving artsy set, what some might derisively refer to as the "frag snobs", maybe it's that Creed in some ways behaves in a designer-esq way. Their fragrances are often mass appealing, not very "challenging". They have now, evidently, joined the very designer-esq flanker game with "cologne" Flankers of Aventus and Viking. And so on. But allow me to say, just to get it off my chest, my philosophy is that if a perfumer doesn't achieve the initial criteria of a pleasant, wearable scent, they've failed. Once they've achieved that initial threshold they can be as artsy, abstract, groundbreaking, and daring as their heart desires. Otherwise they fail. Too often "challenging" seems to be a euphemism for "smelling bad". Yes, fragrance appreciation is greatly subjective and variable. Virtually an olfactory Rorsach test. So the standard is MY nose. And that's my opinion. Thanks for indulging me.
    P.S Having said all that, I do wish Creed would decide whether they are a niche house or not. I'm not a big fan of the flanker concept. It's not becoming of Creed.

    • @ilvean3122

    • @Persolaise
      @Persolaise  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks very much for this interesting comment.
      As you may have gathered from my other videos, I think there's snobbery on all sides of the perfume industry, and I also don't like making too strong a distinction between 'niche' and 'designer'. In fact, I don't think I ever use the latter. I prefer to use 'independent' vs 'non-independent'.
      Ultimately, what I always say is that people must wear what they enjoy wearing.

    • @LordLove
      @LordLove 3 роки тому +1

      My issue with Creed is that they are not a perfume brand, but a 'lifestyle' brand. The whole history of the company is a fabrication, as is the stuff about them being a father/son perfuming duo. I'm not going to claim that all Creed scents are awful - most are just utterly dull (although Original Santal is a horror show) - but to charge the money they do for them is outrageous. They play entirely upon being a status symbol.
      The problem is that they're not a status symbol for the wealthy though; they're a status symbol for people who can't really afford them, but buy them to feel 'successful'. It's the worst form of snake oil selling, given that they only get synthetic banal crap perfumery in return. Or maybe I've just smelt the wrong 'batches' (although my particular counter to that curious argument would be 'I think you mean poor quality control').

    • @Persolaise
      @Persolaise  3 роки тому +2

      @@LordLove There are certainly lots of strong views about the 'heritage'. That said, we can't dismiss the fact that they are a very successful brand.

      @@Persolaise hard to tell if people like them or not... I feel line they don't like to discover. They just press the "buy" button.
      There are so many underrated perfumes out there and, on the opposite side, so many 'niche' or 'exclusives' perfumes which are rather common and mid-range, but they are popular. They come on top of everyone's lips. And that is somewhat sad.
      Just today I have received Korrigan. I felt like Lubin is such an uderrated house with such beautiful blends. Why is it Creed or MFK or Nishane(God, I feel like this guys -Nishane- are making only 'high end' dupes- if that's possible anyway) So they have succes, they are everywhere. And the true gems are so well hidden that they will die before their time. As much as I try to educate myself into this beautiful world, as more and more dissapointment I get from some famous houses. Many of the houses that I really loved- such as Dior- seem to create way more beautiful scents before the "exclusive" era. Think of Poison, Hypnotic Poison, Dolce Vita, Eau de Dolce Vita, Midnight Poison, Diorissimo, J'adore, Miss Dior- all of them such great beauties. And now what? Eden Roc?! Bois d'Argent that you care barely feel it after 2 hours?' Rouge Trafalgar-so synthetic. From the exclusive range I feel like Ambre Nuit is good, but nothing special. Oud Ispahan same - but there are THOUSANDS of better ouds. So what is happening?! And when I keep hearing people giving credits to all this new releases, I wonder- why are the houses trying to educate us in such a manner?! This vanillic sweet general manner, or synthetic molecule way?! Why?! We should develop, but I feel like we are going back. Or maybe is just me ...
      Of course, there are many beautiful perfumes, including new releases (I don't recall any right now 🙈), but there are way too many releases per month. (😳) And the percentage vs is leaning towards "bad", I'm afraid. Really really bad...

    There's really just something about Creed. I've tested some of their popular scents and they all have this interesting fresh opening but, then, something falls off that the remaining scent makes me think of it being a desperate, overarching manly man-cologne. And, because of that, Creed has become (though niche), a "bro-signer" brand. From what I gather, they do have scents that deviate from the brosigner style like Royal Oud which is one Creed that I appreciate. But still, nothing about it merits a $350 - $525 price tag. Ah, subjectivity in perfumes.

      Unconscious bias is a very powerful phenomenon. That said, I think I can say with a great deal of confidence that no matter which brand released this scent, it would elicit the same reaction from me: complete revulsion, on a visceral level.
      I'd suggest the issue isn't bias but taste. I fully acknowledge and accept that some people enjoy Creed's output and will enjoy wearing Viking Cologne. As I said in the video, I don't think Creed have some weird intention to release bad fragrances; I'm sure they think their perfumes are very well made.
